July 13th-20th

 

Welcome another edition of the Donnelly news. I am dedicating this issue to the memory of my mom & dad, who were married on July 10th, 1949, in Elbow Lake.

Weather News, after a sweltering weekend, temps have cooled off, and as I am writing this Tue. Eve, it has rained most of the day "million $ rain" (about an inch). Last week we had a hail storm west of Donnelly that striped some fields, I was informed.

Kongsvinger Krusaders will be a part of the Relay for life on July 23rd at the Lee Center in Morris starting at 5 p.m. For more info, contact the church office.

There will be a virtual block party again this yr. during July to raise funds for the Stevens county food shelf

Other church news west-central area churches present Ernie Haase and signature sound in concert at MAES concert hall July 16th at 7 p.m. a meal (free-will donation) will precede the concert at 5 p.m. This concert is a benefit for FMSC packing event tickets and other info https://www.erniehaase.com/tour.

At Summit cemetery on July 21st at 11 a.m., there will be graveside services for Wally McCollar 

Jason Armstrong of Farwell passed away on July 1st. survivors include the mother of his children Nicki (Hurlbut), a former Donnelly resident, and their family

John Arthur Kroening of Appleton passed away on June 30th. Survivors include his brother-in-law Dick Cady of Donnelly and his family...

Kari Jasper of Balsam Lake, Wis. passed away on July 3rd survivors include her father, Jim Jasper of Clear Lake, formerly of Donnelly.

 

 

Community organization meetings: The Rendsville 4-h meets on the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at St John's Donnelly. The City council meets on the 1st Sat of the month at 4 p.m. at city hall.  The community club meetings are on the 2nd Mon of the month at the community hall at 7 p.m. & the Donnelly Fire Department meets on the 2nd and 3rd Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the fire hall. The Stevens county genealogical society will resume meeting in Sept. The bookmobile stops in Donnelly on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month on Main Street from 2:45–3:00 p.m.; for more info, call 218.739.5286 or visit https://www.viking.lib.mn.us/bookmobile. Also, the VLS is offering a summer reading program: Vlsbookmobile.beanstack.org.

 At the Place to Be in Donnelly at 6 p.m. on July 22nd, Aug.5 & 19th, the DFD will be having a meat raffle.

Members of the Rendsville 4-h club are selling buttons for the Stevens county fair next month. If you buy one from a 4-h member, they get to keep some of the money.

Brochures from the Donnelly walking tour are now in the po.

Driving by Aanerud field one time I was in Donnelly, I saw some work done out there, so I assume some ball games are out there this yr.

The threshing bee royalty was part of the heritage day's parade in Starbuck.

After bible study Tue, I traveled to Donnelly and stopped in to see Jim & Lou Eystad for a few min. They are doing o.k.

Weather News: it remains hot & dry we have had a few minor showers of rain. However, as I am writing this Mon evening, we are getting a light rain shower. We did not get much, but parts of the Donnelly area did and even had some storm damage west of town, I am told. Spraying /haying are the main tasks for farmers so far. Crops continue to look good; most corn should be "knee-high by the 4th."

June 29th-July 6th

Welcome another edition of the Donnelly news. note I have an early deadline next week Weds noon.

Weather News: we had a nice rain on Sunday so far; this week has a bit cool. Spraying haying is the main task for farmers so far. Crops continue to look good; most corn should be knee-high by the 4th.”

ON July 4th at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church, Donnelly, at 9:30 a.m., there will be a Worship Service with Holy Communion - followed by a Brunch and Fellowship - Provided by the KLCW. 

A free-will offering will be collected and given to the Lutheran World Relief.   All are Welcome!

Hazel Olson of Morris passed away on June 18th survivors include her niece Diane (Glen) Amundson of Donnelly and their family.

 The president’s honor list at NDSCS includes Ryanne Long from the Herman/Donnelly area; her dad (Clyde) works at the Donnelly co-op.

There will be a retirement open house for Linda Holland and Veronica Curfman June 30th; 4:30-7:30 pm at Pomme de Tere park main shelter. Linda is from Donnelly

Weather News: some rain last week was welcome, but it is still hot & dry. Some farmers are running their irrigation systems crops look ok so far.

David Nachbor passed away on June 12th. He and his family were the caretakers of Neimackl Lake Park about halfway between Herman & Donnelly for many years.

Troy Boettcher of Warba, MN passed away on June 8th survivors include his dad Ed (Lori) Boetcher and a brother Tim all of Donnelly

Danielle Hoberg of Donnelly made the Dean's list at Alex Tech

Isaac Nienhaus 4th place for Hancock track in the sections; Tiger Lydia Fynboh is going to the state in track

Starting June 1st -20th, we will be looking for candidates interested in running for our 2021/2022 Threshing Bee Royalty.

Eligibility for Little Miss candidates are ages 8-10, and Queen/Princess candidates are ages 14-18. There is a box in the Donnelly po for nominations

While putting up decorations in Grant co Saturday, I stopped at the Barret, care center to visit Helen Peterson.

The past week: open house for Bob Burner at the co-op in Donnelly .grad open house for Brady Loge at the Pomme De Terre golf clubhouse. Memorial Day services at MAES regular services and adult Ed at Gs.

During coffee hr. at Gs, I had an opportunity to say goodbye to Jack Fuchs. He and his wife are moving to TX permanently.

At Brady's open house, I had an opportunity to say "hi" to my former neighbors Gary & Steve Loge.

From Sandy Dunn: As of now, the planning has started for the scheduling of the Bee as usual.  

Starting June 1st -20th, we will be looking for candidates interested in running for our 2021/2022 Threshing Bee Royalty.

Eligibility for Little Miss candidates are ages 8-10, and Queen/Princess candidates are ages 14-18.

Weather News: milder weather has made it feel more like spring out. It appears most framers in the area have most of their fields planted, and a few fields are coming up. We had some rain on Tue eve.

St, John's/Kongsvinger news: services are now being held indoors again with some restrictions in place. Services are at 9:30 a.m., on the 1st, 3rd, 5th Sun at Kongsvinger, the 2nd and 4th Sun at St, John's. Communion is on the 1st and 4th Sun of the month. On May 8th, S.S. ended for the year. Rev. Rochelle Anderson is providing pastoral care. Please contact a council president if you need pastoral care or call her at 320-287-2663.  The KLCW has resumed meeting the 1st Thur. of the month at Kong. Their June 3rd meeting will be at 6:30 p.m.; S.T. J WELCA is still on hiatus. Also, Kong do-days and women's book club have returned. Contact the parish office for dates, times, and places of various events.

The WCC all-conference team in golf includes Brady Loge. His parents are Mike & Jill. His grandfather Steve is originally from Donnelly.

Karen (Harstad) Long and Jane (Larson) Sassenfeld recently retired after 50 & 44 yrs in the nursing field.

Weather News: after a super lovely weekend temps wise things have cooled off some. I still have not seen a lot of field activity, but I can see that many more fields have been worked up and/or planted in the past week or so.

Hailey Lesmeister was one of the MAHS speech participants who took 2nd at the section speech meet; as a team, she and her partner took 1st in duo interpretation, they went on to the state where they made it to the finals and took 4th place.

Kaylen Running Hawk was honored by the Morris area school board for his National heart of the arts award.

Congratulations to Sandy Kopel on her recent election as VFW Aux Jr. Vice and Jack Kopacek, who was elected Patriotic Instructor. Joan Kopacek continues as Auxiliary President.

Justus Moser was part of a Morris area FFA livestock judging team that placed 2nd in the state.

The April 20th paper contains a list of the students that made the honor roll at Morris Area schools. Many Donnelly kids are among them, too many to list here, but please look at them.

I forgot to say thanks to the Easter bunny for the Easter eggs he left at my house a few weeks ago.

The ’21 RTA phone books are out; if you wish to have one, you will have to pick up one at RTA HQ in Hoffman or one of the towns served by them as there are no books in Donnelly.

Justus Moser of Morris won a state degree from the state FFA. His mother, Lori, is from the Donnelly area.

Death notices: Mike Riley of Fergus Falls passed away on April 15th.  Survivors include his parents Marlyn and Deb Riley of Fergus. His dad is a former Donnelly area resident.

Former Donnelly area resident Arden Frank passed away on April 20th. His family owned and operated the Donnelly Hardware store in Donnelly for many years

Brooke Gillespie Curt and Judy (Bjorlin) graduated from N.D.S.U. on December 18th. She graduated with the highest honors, Summa Cum Laude. She was also a Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society member - an invitation given only to the top 10% of each graduating class.  Judy is a former Donnelly area resident

Samuel Oliver Koehntop was born on February 3rd to Mr. and Mrs. Meghan Koehntop. Grandparents include Roger & Bonnie. His great-grandfather was from the Donnelly area.

Isaac Nienhaus is a member of the Hancock boy’s bb team that finished runner-up in the state bb tournament. His grandmother was from the Donnelly area.

On April 3rd,   Halsey Kay Searle (Brad and Crystal Searle) of Donnelly became the newest member of Kongsvinger through baptism. She was born last fall, but I was unaware of it. Grandparents are Lowell and Janet Searle and Rollie and the late Deb Henrichs of Morris, and great-grandma is Agnes Searle of Morris.

Community organization meetings: The Donnelly Fire Department meets on the 2nd and 3rd Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the fire hall. The City council meets on the 1st Sat of the month at 4 p.m. at city hall.  The community club meetings are on the 2nd Mon of the month at the community hall at 7 pm. The bookmobile will resume its regular schedule June 1st with stops in Donnelly on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month on Main Street; More info about that in a future column. The Rendsville 4-h meets on the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at St John’s Donnelly.  Note these are scheduled meetings and subject to change, and I assume there are restrictions, i.e., masks, social distancing, etc., in place. Please check with somebody before planning to attend any scheduled meetings. 

I am happy to have some happy news to share this week. Arne Robert Larson was born to David and Hannah Larson on April 1st. grandparents include Larry and Corrine (Larson) Tuffton of the F-M area and the late Elroy (Butch) Larson

Former Donnelly area resident Francis Van Zomeren of Glendale, AZ, passed away on April 5th. She was 104; her dad lived to be 107

Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news.

I am starting my 14th year of doing this “millioner takk” to all my loyal readers who have enabled me to do this as well as the staff at the Stevens County Times for giving me this opportunity and to my proofreaders who help me catch my mistakes.

Weather News: There Is a saying in MN if you do not like the weather, wait, it will change. It was cold most of the latter part of last week; Sun and Mon were fairly nice. Tue and Wed have been cold this week. We even had some snow on Wed.

St, John's/Kongsvinger news: services are now being held indoors again with some restrictions in place. If you do not wish to go inside, you may remain in your car and listen in on your car radio 98.5 .service bulletins are inside the Kitchen door of both churches.

Services are at 9:30 a.m., on the 1st, 3rd, 5th Sun at Kongsvinger, the 2nd and 4th Sun at St, John's. Communion is on the 1st and 4th Sun of the month. S.S. follows services at 10:30 a.m. in the Kong parish hall. The Parish office remains closed; call or e-mail if you need assistance. Rev. Rochelle Anderson is providing pastoral care. Please contact a council president if you need pastoral care or call her at 320-287-2663.  As far as I know, other than church council meetings, no other events are being held at either church.

Donnelly Rod and gun club annual meeting is today (Tue.) at West Pomme Lodge .45572 140th st Donnelly. Registration /social hour starts at 5 p.m. with dinner to start at 6:30 p.m. and a meeting to follow.

Helen Townsend of Garfield passed away on March 27th survivors include her sister Corrine Kruize of Donnelly.

 

Former Donnelly area resident Fred Sperr of Chokio passed away on March 27th.

Sunday afternoon, I was among those who took part in a Zoom meeting celebrating Roger and Karen Johnson's 65th wedding celebration from Brandon S.D., their son Luther and their family, are former residents of Donnelly.

My health has improved, and since now I  have another car to replace the one I lost in a car accident in Alex, I will start checking my box in Donnelly again. Usually on Tuesday a.m. after bible study at Gs.

Past week: Kmrs spring expo at Lee Center, Tool slider, an invention by Ennen's from Donnelly was one of the exhibitors, services, and bible study at GS

Weather News: Well, old man, winter has (hopefully) gone into hibernation until later this yr. and spring has arrived with some mild days that melted most of the snow. As I am writing this Tuesday eve, it has rained most of the day, and temps have been cool for much of the last week. Wed saw some snow flurries in the area.

 

St, John's/Kongsvinger news: services are now being held indoors again with some restrictions in place. If you do not wish to go inside, you may remain in your car and listen in on your car radio 98.5 .service bulletins are inside the Kitchen door of both churches.

Holy Week: Palm Sun joint services at ST J at 9:30 a.m.; Maundy Thurs. 7 p.m. at Kong: Good Fri. at 7 p.m. at St John's; Easter Sun joint services at 9:30 a.m. at Kong, no SS. note this schedule is different from the previously announced one. If you are planning on attending Easter Sunday services, please preregister.

Former Donnelly area resident Tommy Home of Nashua passed away on March 17th. He was the owner of Tommy's bar in Donnelly for many years.

Tony Smith of Morris passed away on Feb 27th; his special friends Monroe and Cheryl (Armstrong) Estenson of Morris are among his survivors. Cheryl is a former Donnelly area resident

Weather News: we have continued to enjoy some spring-like weather this week, although there have been days with some cold winds. Most of the snow has melted; however, as I am writing this Wed eve we are in a winter storm warning; with several inches of heavy wet snow predicted. We got about 6.” overnight but according to the forecast, it will be gone by the time you read this.

Lenten services will continue to alternate between churches at 7 p.m., concluding with Kong Mar 17th and St John’s Mar 24th

Death notice Lyla Cin of Glenwood, formerly of Donnelly, passed away on Feb 7th. Survivors include her husband Les of Glenwood and sister-in-law Irene Strand of Morris (both formerly of Donnelly )and their families.

In the Feb.16th edition of the Morris paper, a list of students made the honor roll at Morris area schools. Some Donnelly kids are on the list too many to list here, so congrats to them all.

 

If you have time, stop into the Stevens county museum and look at the display on bands in Stevens County, including the old Kongsvinger one.

The Donnelly Fire Department recently received tokens of appreciation in the form of cookies from the Morris VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries.

The Kongsvinger Annual meeting has been rescheduled for Feb 21st same place, time followed by the annual meeting of the Kong cemetery assoc.

Lenten services will start on Feb 17th at 7 p.m. at Kongsvinger and continue every week, alternating between churches at 7 p.m.
