Lloyd Gust Stier, age 65, of Donnelly, died Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at the Minneapolis VA Hospital of congestive heart failure after battling heart disease since 1988.

Lloyd was born on September 15, 1945, to Clifford and Anna (Vleiger) Stier. Lloyd attended country school and then graduated from Morris High School in 1963.

Lloyd joined the US Air Force in 1965 receiving his basic training in Biloxi, MS and then was stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas working in security. While there, he met his true love, Glenda Stier at a traffic light and vowed to his friend that night that he would “marry that woman and they would have beautiful children together.” They were married on December 21, 1965.

Lloyd served in Seoul, Korea for 13 months during the Vietnam War and was sent to several different countries to perform his duties. After his overseas tour and receiving a Certificate as a Sharp Shooter, he was honorably released from active duty. He was very proud to serve his country and continued to serve through a number of veterans organization memberships.

Lloyd worked in many different jobs in Texas and Minnesota from positions in the gas industry to working for the Department of Transportation, but his career was in meat cutting. He received his Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship in 1975 as a Journeyman Meat Cutter and bought the Barrett Locker Plant where he and his wife worked as a team. When his health wouldn’t allow him to work in his chosen field, he sold the locker and eventually had to stop working all together due to injuries he received in the service.

Lloyd enjoyed country music, camping, loved Johnny Cash, always had something to “putter” on in his garage, mentored neighborhood boys on how to fix on a car, wrote poetry and took pride in the title of “Super Dad.” He often would play cards with his friends and relatives, enjoying the conversations and adding his own humorous twist to stories whenever he got the chance.

He is survived by his wife, Glenda Stier, daughters Roberta (Robbie) and Shelly Stier, one grandson, Kevin Lloyd Stier, one Brother, Robert (wife Charlotte) Stier, two sister-in-law, Grace Stier and Barb Stier Aal, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Anna (Vlieger) Stier, brothers Russ and Dean Stier; sister, Betty Stier; nephew Brad Stier and niece Susan (Stier) Radil.

A Memorial Gathering will take place on Sunday, March 6, at 2:00 pm at the Hoffman Community Center in Hoffman, Minnesota.

Weather news: after enjoying several weeks of respite, winter made a comeback on sun with about 11” of snow in our area and blowing and drifting giving snow removal equipment another good workout. The saving grace has been that temps have remained above 0.

Dr. Terry Moretson of "answers in genesis" will be the guest speaker for a series of meetings “not ashamed” at the mahs auditorium on Feb 27 and the hosanna worship center in Morris on the 28th. Events begin on the 27th with a music worship program at 9:30 am followed by a program at 10:30 am and continuing at 6 and 7:30 pm. On the 28th programs are at 11 am (grades k-6), 12:45 pm (grades 7-12) and concludes with two programs at 6 and 7:30 pm. Frank runyeon will present a performance of the “letter of James” at Assumption Catholic Church on Feb 27 at 2 pm free will offering.

WAM will meet on March 5, at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home with coffee at 9:30 am program at 10 am. The speaker will be Pr. Julie Smith, from the Institute for Lutheran Theology, the new seminary in Brookings, S.D. She will also be the guest speaker at gslc on Mar 6th.

There will be an open house in honor of gert Brandt’s 90th birthday today (Sat) from 1-3 pm at the Glenwood Lutheran church in Glenwood. No gifts please. She is a former Donnelly area resident.

The st co rep party convention will be held on Mar 4th at the Legion in Morris beginning with registration at 6:30 pm meeting at 7 pm

The st co gen soc will have their first meeting of the year on Mar 3 at 1:30 pm at the library in Morris. Due to a scheduling conflict the meeting will be held in the gen room.

The Rendsville 4-h club will meet on Mar 7th at 7 pm in the fire hall meeting room

The red hatters will meet at “a place to be” on Mar 7th at 1 pm. Bring your favorite flower seed packet. They will also have their st pat’s day party at “Denny’s” in Herman on the 17th @ 1:30 pm for pie day Dutch treat.

Area townships will have their annual meetings on Mar 8th, Donnelly twp. will meet at fire hall in Donnelly, Rendsville and most others at their town halls. Check with you local town clerk or the county auditor’s office for specific meeting places and times.

This is FFA week and I counted about 20 kids from the Donnelly area among the 80 members of the Morris h.s FFA chapter listed in the supplement to the paper. , including these officers Sami Searle sec Natalie Johnston VP Kendra Speer parliamentarian. Congratulations to the following FFA teams on their recent accomplishments. The Ag issues team placed first in the cde at the state, Kaitlin van horn is a member of that team, the general livestock teams finished 6th Natalie Johnston is a member of that team, the horse team finished 2nd Sami Searle is a member of that team. Sami also finished first in the district FFA proficiency applications for regional judging and interviews. Kendra Speer also won first in agribusiness service placement proficiency and Natalie Johnston was also first in sheep production placement proficiency. Kendra, Kaitlin, and Natalie were also among those earned state degree and Kendra will be considered for region 3 stars in agri- business award

Congratulations to the Morris FFA Ag knowledge bowl team which finished first at the skills fest in Willmar on Feb 10th. Jake Moser and Natalie Johnston are members of that team.



This also the 100th anniversary of the boy scouts of America several Donnelly area boys are among the members of the Morris troop.

The don community club and the st co gen soc were two of the exhibitors at the nonprofit expo at the armory on Feb 17th. Earlier in the day I visited some friends at the WWV.

Michelle Papesh and I visited my cousin Bev Hurlbult at LL in Morris on Mar 18th.

Jon and Joan Kopeck and I attended the retirement party of Lyle Miller at the Morris sr. center on Mar 18th. His daughter is Lori Mau of Donnelly. Later I traveled to Herman for the visitation for LaVern Wilts. His granddaughter Carrie was the 2009-2010 little Miss Donnelly princes. Jim and Lou Eystad attended his funeral on Feb 19th at Bethel in Herman.



Jon and Joan Kopacek attended the annual meeting of Luther Crest at Alex on Feb 13th.

Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended services at gslc on Feb 20th and the bible study afterwards. It was announced that they will join with members of st j of rural starbuck for Lenten services this year at St J .Later Andy Brevig and I attended the Niemackl lake park fund raising breakfast at the Legion in Herman. We also attended the st co rep central committee meeting at Detoy’s on Feb 21st. at the meeting a flier was passed around announcing a lakes area tea party event to be held today (sat) from 10 am –noon at the Broadway ballroom in Alex. For more info call 320-491-1655. After the meeting I attended the visitation for Marcella Hotovey at the funeral home. Her daughter Cindy is a schoolmate of mine.

I received the following info from the Kopacek family: Leif Andersen in Denmark writes that he would like to start a correspondence with the descendants of Chris [1881-1954] and Marie (Andersen) [1886-1868] Nelsen who lived in Morris. Some of their 8 children were: Florence (Mrs. Alvin Olson), Raymond, Wilbur, Clarence, Bernard, and Robert. If you are a relative or know somebody who is you can call Joan at 246-3381 or let me know I will pass the info along.

Jim and Lou Eystad have been busy attending birthday parties in the last week. They along with other family and friends helped her aunt Marlys Alm celebrate her birthday last week at her house. The event was hosted by her children. On Feb 19th they were at a birthday party for Jeanne and Brennia Sanasack at the Prairie Inn in Morris. They also helped Lillian halbakken celebrate her 85th birthday this week. She is out of the hosp.

Funeral services for LuVern F. Wilts of Herman, MN will be held Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church in Herman. Reverend Jennifer Rose will be officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 7 PM at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Herman and for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Herman.

LuVern Fredrick Wilts, son of Earl and Alma (Brunkow) Wilts, was born March 22, 1924 in Eldorado Township in Stevens County, Minnesota. He was baptized at the United Methodist Church and confirmed at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Herman. LuVern attended Country School District #61 in Eldorado Township. During and following his schooling he worked on the farm with his parents. On September 21, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mildred Christenson. The couple made their home in Eldorado Township, where LuVern farmed with his brother and brother-in-law. In 1972, LuVern and his sons formed Triple D Farms. In 1983, LuVern and Mildred moved to Herman and LuVern continued to help his sons out whenever he could.

LuVern was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Herman, where he served on the church council. He served for 13 years on the Herman-Norcross School Board and served on the Eldorado Township Board for several years. He enjoyed farming, fishing, wood-working and camping at Ten-Mile Lake Resort. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

LuVern died on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 86 years.

He is survived by his wife: Mildred Wilts of Herman; five children: Dennis (Marcy) Wilts of Herman, Annegine (Larry) Vipond of Herman, Duane (Carol) Wilts of Chokio, Sharlene (Dale) Schmidt of Fergus Falls and Douglas (Ellen) Wilts of Herman; son-in-law: Jon Roehl of Fergus Falls; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister: Shirley (George) Libbon of Chokio; two sisters-in-law: Beverly Wilts of Chokio and Bernice Christenson of Hector, MN one brother-in-law: George Gow of Benson, AZ and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter: Corrine Roehl; one grandson: Bruce Wilts; his parents and two brothers: Winfred and Marvin Wilts.

Pallbearers for the service are LuVern’s grandsons: Bryan Wilts, Todd Vipond, Eric Vipond, Jason Roehl and Darin Roehl. Honorary pallbearers are LuVern’s granddaughters: Jennifer Joecks, Stephanie Richman, Kristen Gronwold, Amber Tabbert, Kaley Wilts, Roseanna Wilts, Angela Tharaldson, Karma Schmidt, Jessica Schmidt, Carrie Wilts and Kellie Wilts. Olivia Richards will serve as organist for the service with Greg Sperr serving as soloist. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Lakeside Cemetery in Herman, Herman Fire Department and Herman First Responders

Weather news: after months of ice, snow, and bitter cold it was nice to get a respite from winter during the past week. After bottoming out at about -20 last Thursday eve temps began to rise and have been in the ‘30’s and ‘40’s ever since melting some of the snow around here and giving snow removal equipment and their operators a well-deserved rest. Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended services at gs on Feb 13th. In the aft I attended the annual meeting of the schs at the museum. Bernice Erdahl was reelected to the board. Rod Evans gave a very interesting program on palaces on the prairie. Most of us have heard of the corn palace in Mitchel but through the years there have been other kinds of palaces built in north and South Dakota, neb, Texas, WY etc. and the alfalfa arch built in Morris in 1913
Steve Fults and I attended the Nhas annual meeting at the legion in Herman on Feb 15th. The co-op had another good year with a net profit of 8.6 million. Afterwards I visited Selma Bruse at her apt in Herman.
Jim and Lou Eystad visited her aunt Marlys Alm at her apt in Morris on the 13th. On the eve of the 24th they helped Rita Kiser and colleen dogotch celebrate their birthdays at the diamond club along with their husband Pete and tom. On the 16 they visited Lillian hanrock in the hosp.

Weather news: a few days of moderate temps last week gave us a brief respite from winter before it returned again sun aft with blowing and drifting. By Mon am we were back in the deep freeze again a pattern that has continued all week. Thankfully the forecast calls for some nicer weather by the end of the week.
STJ/KONG PARISH News: the parish ss and Luther league are sponsoring a sweetheart luncheon on Feb. 13th at noon at st J. For tickets (advance reservations only) or for more info contact sandy Dunn at 246-3292. Menu includes chocolate dipped strawberries, “seasoned with love" bread, “hearty" lasagna, salad, desert, punch coffee

GSLC news: Having raised most of the money need for the completion of phase one of the building projects the board has decided to proceed with fund raising for phase two: installing tile, carpet, trim, kitchen cupboards etc. I stopped by the site on Feb 8th several crews were busy working in the parish hall.
Members of the good shepherd church will be going tubing at Andes towers hill on Feb 13th leaving Morris about noon and returning about mid aft. If you need a ride or want more info call 392-5548

Leona Halbe of Willmar passed away on Feb 3rd. Among the family members that survive her are her son Steve (Jeanne Gulbrandson) and their family. Jeanne’s parents are Arlene and the late Wilbur Gulbrandson.
Haley Jean Bertram was born on Dec 20th to Scott and Jamie Bertram of Herman. Grandparents are dale wilts, Brenda wilts, Pete and Rita Kaiser and mike Bertram, great grandparents are Don and Marilyn Bates; Les and Darlene Bertram, and Mary Ann Kaiser.
Congratulations to the umm vb team that finished as runner-ups in the umac. Nichole Gielispe is a member of that team.

Congratulations to Beth Holland who was named kmrs/kkok player of the game on Feb. 1st.
Congratulations to Becky Hennen on being named support staff person of the year at the Morris public schools.
Congratulations to Zach Geise (brad and Kristi) who was one of the winners in the KMRS/minnewaska bait and tackle ice fishing contest

In last week’s paper there is an article about the Cyrus school being used for an observations post to watch for planes during the cold war. As I mentioned in an earlier column I had an e-mail from a former Donnelly resident who told me that she and several other young ladies did the same thing in the library of the Donnelly school during that time period.
Jerald and June itzen and I attended the wam potluck meeting at the minnewaska Lutheran home in starbuck on Feb 5th. The next meeting is scheduled for Mar 5th. After wards I visited Donna Frank at her home in starbuck.
Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the services at good shepherd in Morris on Feb. 6th and the bible study afterwards. I also stopped by the bridal showcase next door, Sandra d’s flowers was one of the exhibitors. Later I visited marvel Wagner in her apt in Morris and the visitation for Leona Halbe at the funeral home. Marvel was one of the founders of the st co gen soc and she says that in her research she discovered that one of the people in her family tree is astronaut Neil Armstrong the first man on the moon.

Weather news: as I am writing this on ground hog day it is sunny out here so he will see his shadow and that means we are in for 6 more weeks of winter. We enjoyed a few days of respite from winter last week with some mild temps but it did not last long as by Sat aft it was storming again and has stormed off and on most of this week. It has also turned very cold again. I did see my annual sign of spring last week the cougar bb was beginning workouts at the rfc. Thanks to my neighbor for blowing me out again this week.

Having raised most of the money need for the completion of phase one of the building projects the board has decided to proceed with fund raising for phase two: installing tile, carpet, trim, kitchen cupboards etc.
Wam will have their annual meeting today (sat) at the minnewaska Lutheran home in starbuck at 10 am followed by a potluck dinner (the one in Dec was cancelled due to the weather). The program will be election of officers and a DVD by Dr. Paulson on “why Lutherans are still needed in the church today” for more info call 795-277
Several weeks ago I talked to Delano Meyer as he and Linda were preparing to leave for a short tem mission trip to Africa. I recently received an e-mail from them stating that they had arrived safely and they were busy doing agricultural training in Kenya and Tanzania. Next week they will be traveling to South Africa to do more of the same. he informs me that their trip has been fully funded however if you would like to support their type of work you can send donations to LCMS World Mission Missionary Support PO Box 790089 St. Louis, MO 63179-0089


The Donnelly city council meeting will be on Feb 7th at 7 pm. I had a note in my box concerning the meetings apparently there is some misunderstanding about them being taped and televised. I understand the volume is not too good but that is being worked on

Former Donnelly area resident Lloyd C. Neudick, of Lewistown MT passed away on Dec 27th. His parents were the late John and Hilda (Anderson) Neudick
Elmer Madison of Chokio formerly of the Donnelly area passed away on Jan 29th. His brother Ed ran a gas station in Donnelly for many years.
Marvin wilts of Herman passed away on Feb 1st. Survivors include his wife bev (Diehl) sister Shirley (Geo) Libbon and mother in law myrta Diehl
Congratulations to the Morris business professional assoc. chapter that won several awards at the regional competition at Alex tech, Sydney Beyer, Sami Searle, and Kendra Speer are members of that org.

Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the visitation for Carol Brevig at the funeral home and Rudy Gulbrandson at st j on Jan 28th, their funerals at Kong and St J on the 29th, worship services at good shepherd on the 30th ,and the memorial service for burton strand on the 31s t at Kong. I told Lou on Mon that I think we have seen enough of each other for a while. In their “spare” time they have been visiting Ruth Moerke in the hosp. in Morris. I guess if there is an “up” side to all the funerals it is the chance to see and visit with some people you have not seen for a long time.
Jim Aanerud and I were among those who attended the Donnelly co-op’s winter crop day at the Donnelly hall on Feb 1st. Even though I am no longer actively involved in farming, I am still a “farmer at heart” and enjoy attending meetings like this.
Pearl A. Anderson celebrated her birthday on Jan 27th. Several members of her family and friends stopped in during the week to wish her a happy birthday. I stopped by to visit her enroute home from Morris on Feb 2nd. I also visited my cousin Bev Hurlbut at LL on the 2nd.
