Donnelly News
Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news.
By: by Allen Anderson, Morris Sun Tribune
Please note that due to the New Year's holiday, I will need any news by Dec. 28.
The weather during the past week has been mild with temperatures above zero and not much wind. We got a few inches of snow over the weekend.
In parish news from St. John’s/Kongsvinger: There will be joint services at St. John’s on Dec. 29 at 10:30 a.m. with Tom and Pearl Horning singing and playing at the services. On Jan. 3 services will be at 8:30 a.m. at Kongsvinger and at 11 a.m. at St. John’s. There will be no Sunday School either week. The regular schedule will resume on Jan. 10.
The parish collection for the Stevens County Food Shelf will continue through December.
The parish Toys for Tots collection netted 52 hats and headbands, 19 scarves, ten quilts, blankets, afghans, and baby blankets, 65 mittens and gloves, five sweatshirts, t-shirts and socks and six toys, books or games.
The area youth organization is planning on a tubing event at Andes Tower Hills on Jan. 17. Contact the parish office to sign up.
The West Central Area Word Alone chapter will meet on Jan. 2 at the Glenwood Retirement Home (719 2nd St SE). Please note this is a change of location. Coffee fellowship begins at 9:30 a.m. with the program at 10 a.m.
Most Donnelly business will be closed on Jan. 1. HD & Co. will be closed today (Saturday) and also on Jan. 2.
Former Donnelly residents Doddie Overson Williams and Elaine Overson Storck are starting a "Donnelly Girls" lunch get-together on the second Saturdays of January and July. The first one will be on Jan. 9 at Culvers Restaurant in Rogers, Minn. at 1 p.m. Any ladies who have ever lived in Donnelly are welcome to attend. Any questions, call Doddie at 763-477-5360 or Elaine at 612-385-8295.
Congratulations to the following who were named students of the quarter at MAHS. Ashley Melberg; Tim Uphoff; Wade Backman and Bryce Jergenson.
On Dec. 17 several of us took in the open house at Federated Telephone in Morris. Later Joyce Steuck and I were among those who helped Morris Lumber celebrate its tenth anniversary.
On Dec. 18 Andy Brevig, Steve Fults and I traveled to Hoffman to hear Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Marty Seifert speak.
On Dec. 19 Pearl A. Anderson and I attended the community meal and Santa visit at the Donnelly Hall. Pearl’s daughter, Bonnie Fabian from Herman, granddaughter Michelle Gessford of Alexandria and her children came to see Santa. Afterwards they spent some time visiting at Pearl’s house.
The Hall looked very festive on Saturday, thanks to all the time, effort and hard work the Threshing Bee royalty and their families. Santa left his reindeer in Herman that day, so the Donnelly Fire Department picked him up and gave him a ride into town in their fire truck. There was a very good group of kids who came and told Santa what they wanted for Christmas. Afterwards they had an opportunity for rides with Santa in the fire truck.
On Dec. 20 Jim and Lou Eystad enjoyed the Sunday School program at St. John’s and the roast beef dinner afterwards.
That afternoon Joyce Steuck and I enjoyed a performance by the New Wine troupe from First Lutheran Church of Morris.
On Dec. 20 Denny Anderson traveled to his daughter's home in Hutchinson for a family Christmas dinner.
Wishing you and your family a happy, healthy and blessed New Year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

MERRY CHRISTMAS

ALLEN "DUKE" AND "BUTTONS"

THE ANDERSON'S

christmas letter

Some 50 yrs ago my mom read in some farm mag an idea about writing an annual Christmas letter. She took the idea and ran with it and so this yr marks the 50th year of this letter. She would write it out then find somebody to type it out for her then get it copied someplace. As I grew up I began to help here with it especially after I began learning how to type myself. After I graduated from H.S. I began to more involved in the writing. Mom had a stroke in 1988 and we had to put her in the nursing home in Morris. However I have kept up the tradition of writing it with help from aunt Mable and others finding it a nice way to keep family friends updated on my life. After I got a computer it has made doing the job a lot easier. I hope you enjoy my annual epistle.

DONNELLY MINN. CHRISTMAS 2009

"Oh Come all ye faithful Joyful and triumphant” With the words of this familiar hymn, I greet you once again with the annual Christmas letter. This year marks the 50th anniversary of this letter; a family tradition stared by my Mom who got the idea from some farm magazine

Weather news: 2009 will long be remembered as one of the most memorable years weather wise with cold temps, drought, and a very late fall. The ‘08-‘09 winter began in early December with back to back weekend snow storms, that forced the cancellation of most church services and other events in the area and continued throughout the rest of the winter with storms, snow, and cold temps that made life difficult until it finally ended in late Mar. Our area made the news in late Feb when the 10" of snow we received was one of the largest amounts in the state. The melting snow, plus spring rains, contributed to some flooding especially in the Red River Valley area in Apr. Field work got started in earnest in mid- May around here, a few dry weeks enabled farmers to make good progress, and by late May most of the crop was in the ground and starting to come up. Most of the summer was cool, (July was the third coldest month on record in MN), and dry. Grain harvest got underway about mid Aug, bean harvest started in Sept when “summer" finally arrived. It was one of the warmest September’s on record, and it also brought some much-needed rain. Snow, rain, cold temps, etc. made Oct. a month to forget and kept most area farmers out of the field for most of it. A mild Nov. enabled most farmers in the area were able to get the rest of the crops harvested and fall fieldwork by early Dec. Considering the crazy weather we had during the growing season, farmers were happy just to get a crop and yields were still good although the corn was wet necessitating a lot of drying. Early Dec has brought some light snow, blowing and drifting, and very cold temperatures

I put a lot of miles on my car again this year traveling to many parades, community celebrations, fairs, farm shows and other events in the area. It is often an opportunity to see unusual and interesting things, meet people I do not see too often and hear some interesting speakers. I did not go to S.C. this year but did take several "mini" vacations; to DeSmet SD in July to see their Wilder Pageant, in Sept to Rollag, Dalton and Albany for their threshing shows and to Fargo for Big Iron. I camped out at all of those events so I could spend more than one day at them. Our threshing Bee had its best attendance in many years; participation was also up in most events too. One of the highlights for me this year was a performance of “State Fair" by students at MAHS. In Apr a send off ceremony at MAHS, dinner at the Lee Center and dance at the Armory was held for the local National Guard Unit that was being deployed to Iraq again. A new event this year was a trim a tree contest held at the Donnelly Hall, to raise money for hall renovations. Our annual Ice Cream social and Halloween party were well attended too. At the Stevens County Genealogical Society meeting in Mar and Apr, a local family showed slides of their trip to Norway last year and also at several other events in the area this year. Aug marked the end of an era in Donnelly when the Frank family closed the Donnelly Hardware store for good and had an auction to sell the store and it's contents

Church News: In Dec our parish voted to call our interim pastor Rev Judy Gieleinske to be our full time pastor. Tom and Pearl Horning sang and played at several services again this year, as well at the Threshing Bee community services. Other parish events included confirmation and baccalaureate services, a fourth of July gathering at Kong; Rally Sun at Kong; St J beef supper, Kong Fall festival; a presentation on Alzheimer’s; a Christmas carol sing a long; several joint services and the usual assortment of pot luck meals. Our S.S. program was canceled this year due to bad weather. I continue to travel to area churches for the monthly WCAWA chapter meetings often affording me the opportunity to hear some very good and interesting speakers. On Sept 27 five area WA chapters sponsored a meeting at MT. Carmel Bible Camp near Alex, entitled “A Denomination at Risk,” The president of the national WA organization along with two ELCA bishops discussed the results of the actions taken by the ELCA assembly in Aug in Minneapolis where they voted to accept the recommendations of the sexuality task force, including allowing the ordination of practicing homosexual pastors. A forum featuring Rev King and Rev Grorud from Lutheran Core was held in Willmar on Oct 3rd where I had an opportunity to visit a little with our former pastor Luther Johnson. Oct 10th it was back to MT. Carmel for a presentation by Rev Dale Wolf of Atonement Lutheran church in Fargo on LCMC. On Nov 30th the WCAWA chapter sponsored a forum in Morris with Rev Steve King, who is education director for WA and head of Sola Publishing, in which he also talked about the decisions and options produced by the ELCA assembly. Some other church events in the area I attended included: the conference assembly at East Zion of Starbuck; a bishops forum in Milan; two "New Wine" shows at First Lutheran in Morris, the first by a troupe from Clouquet, and the second a homecoming concert by the troupe from First Lutheran, Faith Discovery Series by Dr. Berlie at the MAHS auditorium; a “Captive Free” concert at Fron in Starbuck; the St Olaf Hand bell choir concert at Faith in Morris and the Concordia College Christmas concert in Moorhead.

Family news: I am still living and working out here on the farm with my "family", which has a new member this year. “Buttons”was a kitten I got this summer to replace "Kitty" a long time “family” member that died this summer, I am still looking for some work, I have applied for several jobs but have not gotten any, I hope that next year I can get into the Sr. works program. I am still writing the Donnelly News for the Morris paper, and have had a lot of complements about it; I also put up a blog this year (DonnellyMinn.blogspot.com) to provide a little more timely news. My health is ok, I still take medicine for diabetes and high blood pressure, and need to watch what I eat, I still work out several times a week in Morris. I still belong to the Donnelly Community Club, and the St Co Gen Soc. My aunt Pearl, and my cousin Bev became great grandmother, and grandmother again this year as Nikki and Jason Armstrong had a baby boy Gavin Dennis in Aug. The rest of my family is “status quo” my other aunt Pearl is still in Donnelly, and sells Avon, my cousin Carl (Billy), his wife Pat, and sister Elnora are still in S.C., my cousin Jan, and her husband Dennis are still in Alex. When I am home I spend a lot of time on line listening to various religious programs, my e-mail ad is aeanders@runestone.net. I do have a new cell # 320-287-1219. Thank you for your prayers during the past year, and please keep me in them during the upcoming year.

As always at this time of the year we pause to remember the friends and acquaintances that have passed away during the past year. Happier occasions this year were several birthday and wedding anniversary celebrations for friends and relatives in the area.

Now may the God of Christmas go with you during the upcoming year.

Sincerely yours
Allen, "Duke" and "Buttons"

update

I have been really busy lately and have not gotten around to posting anything for a while sorry about that I hope to do better in the future. The big news this wk was the prediction of a major winter storm that was going to hit our area. Thankfully so far it has not been as bad as predicted although it was not very nice out there tonight the drive to town and back for services was not easy and only a few of us from the country ventured out.The snow was coming down fairly heavy when I left for town about 8:30 pm and visibly was not very good but it had let up some by the time services were done although the roads were not too bad. I did go to Morris for the living Nativity service at Faith the roads and weather were not too bad. It was kind of expected that we would be unable to have services at Kong in the a.m. We are scheduled to have joint services at St J on the 27th at 10:30 am with Tom and Pearl Horning playing and singing. It will also be broadcast on KMRS at 11 am. There will be no S.S. on the 27th or Jan 3rd but there will be services at Kong and St J at regular times. the regular schedule resumes on Jan 10th.

UPDATE DEC 25TH NO SERVICES AT KONG!

I rode with my neighbor for a while on Fri. He said moisture levels were still about 25%; they had not figured out the yields yet but it looked good and considering the crazy growing season we had this year they were just glad to get a crop.

An all day rain on Fri put a temporary halt to corn picking for a few days but sunny mild weather the rest of week has enabled farmers to make rapid progress in getting their corn crop out. It has not dried out much moisture levels are holding fairly steady at about 25% according to my neighbor. There are still a few bean fields left to be picked but given the weather forecast I would suspect that most farmers should be done with most of their fall field work in time to enjoy Thanksgiving.

At the last joint council meeting it was decided to extend her interim contract to Mar 1st giving the church councils some time to decide on the future of our parish.

On my blog site I have posted a copy of an e-mail I got from “Weddings and More Video Services” of Glenwood that lists the most popular church/WA related DVD/cd’s that they have for sale. I will also print it and post it the narthex’s of our churches.

I talked to a friend who raises cattle and it has been hard on them too dealing with all the mud in the feedlots. He said they were fortunate as they can chop a lot of their corn.

meyer misson news Oct

Dear Christian Friends,

Delano and Linda will be traveling to Uganda in Mid November, so
another newsletter will probably not be sent out until after
Christmas. Also, please let us know when you change your e-mail
address so you can continue to receive their newsletter. Until next
time - God's blessings! Joan

MEYER MISSION NEWS
The Harvest Takes Priority
October 2009
Dear Friends:
Today October 17, 2009, is normally harvest time in the Midwest of
the USA. In a good year farmers would be done with soybean harvest
and pressing on to complete corn harvest before November.

Sadly we have learned that due to "Global Warming" the summer was so
cool that crops did not mature as normal and the harvest is delayed.
We learned of a 2-inch snowfall in Minnesota on the 10th of October
with rain and snow continuing for the following week. I do recall
the anxiety I felt as a farmer when these things happened, and the
pressure of finances made the delays an even more tremendous drain on
my temperamental, harvest time personality; poor Linda, Laura and Brian.

By God's grace when you receive this newsletter, those who are
rolling the harvest machinery will be happily at it; and their loving
spouses will be delighted to have the grouch out of the house.

The urgency of the crop harvest and the present situation in the Mid-
West is a great back-drop to help us understand better the urgency
our Lord feels as he compares the harvest of souls for eternity with
harvesting the crop. "I tell you open your eyes and look at the
fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws his
wages, even now he harvests the crops for eternal life, so that the
sower and the reaper may be glad together." John 4: 35 & 36

Harvesting the fall crops for me was a high priority, and we as a
family focused on getting the crop harvested and stored before winter
set in. I confess that during times when harvest was delayed by rain
and immature crops, I often lost sight of the real reason for being
alive and being a Christian. The harvest seemed to consume me. I do
not want to talk about times when the John Deere 6600 combine broke
down when there was snow in the weather forecast. I am thankful our
Lord understands human beings and farming. Isn't God's grace a
wonderful thing?

Still the harvest of souls - including your own - is the main thing.
You, who witness about Jesus in a positive way, are the sower.
Blessed by the Holy Spirit bringing repentance and faith, you are
even now harvesting the crops - the souls of men, women and children
for eternal life! What joy we will have eternally being part of our
Lord's harvest brigade, as we ourselves are gathered to the Lord and
as our Lord uses us to gather the crop of souls for eternity.

In the harvest in West Africa the church is bringing souls to Jesus
and thus eternal salvation. It is heartening for Linda and me to be
in a small way part of His great commission. We are blessed to
work with and encourage others who sow and reap crops for eternal
life. In Sierra Leone Rev. James Yasseh and Rev. John Bundor have
worked with other Lutheran leaders to help the rural farmers with
improved rice and groundnut (peanut) seed through a seed
multiplication project LCMS WR&HC sponsored in 2008. Not only did
they give out improved seed that yielded well, but the way in which
they worked with communities and individuals generated enthusiasm for
the church and an outpouring of seed returned to the project at
harvest in 2008. This year without any additional funding from LCMS
WR&HC, seed has been distributed to new places and multiplied again
in two districts.

Our leaders' example of Christian love for the people they serve is
reflected in how they administered the seed multiplication project.
The people seeing Christian integrity, honesty and openness are
responding! Even the Ministry of Agriculture has taken note of the
success and asked our leaders to be part of a governmental meeting
where they share insights on how they have conducted the project.
Sad fact, a government official told our leaders, that the government
has not been able to conduct a successful seed multiplication project
in the years since the war. What a joy when our guys are getting it
right!!

It all starts with motivation to serve our Lord in Christian love as
expressed in 1 John 4: 9-12 "This is how God showed His love among
us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live
through Him. This is love: not that we love God, but that He loves
us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear
Friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us
and his love is made complete in us."

At Christmas we will again celebrate how God showed us His love by
sending His Son into the world to be our Savior from sin. May we all
rejoice in His love and share it with one another.

Next edition Oct 24th - Oct 30th

Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news.

We had the nicest day of the month on Sun with sun shine and temps in the 60's but most of the rest of the last week has been cloudy, cool, and rainy. Farmers took advantage of what nice weather we had to work on getting the beans out and some did start picking some corn. Dunns were one of them but Verle said everything was just so wet they just quit and he figured they might have to wait for a good hard freeze before they could do anything else.

We want to welcome the newest member of the parish Jadeyn Mau who was baptized at Kong on Oct 18th. Her parents are Maynard and Lori; grandmother is Edna Mau. Next edition Oct 17 Oct 23rd

Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news.

The weather during the past week has been almost a repeat of last week; cloudy, cool, and wet although this week we had snow rather than rain. I cannot remember the last time we had this much snow this early in the year although thankfully it has all melted. We also had a hard freeze so the crop growing season is done. Area farmers have been making use of the periods of semi-decent weather we have had in the last week to get the crops out but there is still a lot beans left to be picked.

On Oct 10th I attended the visitation for Fern Pasche at the Erickson- Smith funeral home in Hoffman. Her son Dan is a good friend of mine, he and his family used to come and get apples from us for several years.

On Oct 10th a good crowd of about 150 people including several of us from the Donnelly area braved the icy roads to Mt Carmel for a special Word Alone event. Rev Dale Wolf of Atonement Lutheran church in Fargo explained what LCMC is (Lutheran Churches in Missions for Christ). There are video and audio tapes for sale of this meeting as well as the one on Sept 27th. Contact me for details about ordering them. While at the meeting I had a chance to visit a little with Rev Dave Gran who was an interim pastor at STJ/Kong about 25 years ago.

After leaving Alex I stopped in Hoffman for the one year celebration of the Main St Galleria. The next stop was at the Regional Fitness Center in Morris for their 10th aniv celebration. Several current and former Donnelly area residents were recognized as 10 yrs members. Enroute home I stopped to visit Jim and Lou Eystad in Donnelly

Oct 11th several from the area attended ‘UMM Sun” at First Lutheran in Morris. Services were led by “PK” and her student leaders from Lutheran Campus Ministries. After services we enjoyed dinner together. In the aft several Donnelly area residents were among a goodly crowd that attended the 40th anniversary open house of the Day Activity Center in Morris.

Pearl A. Anderson and I were among the many friends and relatives who attended
the visitation for Donna Enquist at the Pederson Funeral Home in Morris on Oct 12th, and also
her funeral on the 13th at the Assumption Catholic church. She was a wonderful lady and will be greatly missed by those of us who knew her.

Later I took in the Cliff Anderson sale in Morris and enroute home I stopped in to visit Denny Anderson in Donnelly.

On Oct 14th I stopped at the museum to see some of their exhibits. Tina Didreckson the curator told me that they are planning a Christmas exhibit and are looking for memorabilia from Donnelly that merchants used to give out as customer appreciation gifts at Christmastime i.e. calendars thermometers etc. If you have any please drop them off at the museum.

When I was doing some research in the genealogy room of the library in the afternoon I met a former Donnelly area resident Willie Dornquist from Red Wing so we had an opportunity to visit for a while.
