Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news:

Weather news: it has been very hot and dry over the past week with temps into the 90’s.

ST John’s/Kongsvinger news: There will be joint services at 10:15 a.m. at St. John’s on September 1st   and at 11 a.m. at Kong on September. 8th

Good Shepherd news:  the September. newsletter is now out extra copies are available in the back hallway of the church.  The September coffee money goes to the Augustana dist. the mission of the month is Samaritans purse

Death notice: former Donnelly area resident Rosella “Trudy” M. (Ernst) Bean, 80, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away peacefully Monday evening, August 26, 2013,

Community news: Niemakel park lake day will be held on September 8th at the park which is about half ways between Herman and Donnelly beginning with a dinner at 11 a.m.

I had a message from David Flugel asking me to encourage all current and former Donnelly area residents to join the Donnelly kids Facebook page

There will be an open house 50th anniversary celebration for Gene and Sharon Miller on Saturday, September. 7, at West Pomme Lodge from 4 to 7 p.m. No gifts please

There will be no st co gen soc mtg in September. next meeting is thurday Oct. 3rd at THE LIBRARY.

Randy and Louisa Werk of Herman are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter, Amanda Werk to Sean Sorteberg, son of Mike and Lori Sorteberg of Thief River Fall. A September 14th wedding is planned at the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria

Jim and Lou Eystad and I were among those of us from the area who braved the heat to attend some of the events of the bee over the weekend. Attendance and Participation in many events was down this year I assume due in part to the heat. Due to the heat I did not get around too much, to get many results, I know Kong was a co-winner of the traveling trophy for parade float; St J and the threshing bee royalty float were among those who won merit ribbons for being one of the best entries. Couple of interesting notes from the tractor pull deb smith outpolled her husband Kyle twice former Donnelly Threshing bee princess Brennia (Neuman) Summers out pulled her dad in her class.

Napa is the Morris men’s soft ball league runner up’s team members were Scott Henrichs, Tom Holland and Bryce Jergenson 

tri county horseshoe play off results :Wally Giese 1st class b ; class c Nick Daly 1st  .Wally won the sandbagger award (highest over AVG ,League AVG 7.27 % tourney 23.3 % ; Glen Werk received honorable mention for pitching almost double his AVG.

Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended bible study at Good Shepherd on August 21st and vbs there in the eve.



A good group of workers gathered at the bee grounds on August. 26th to take things down and put them away.



Mark Koepke and I helped out with the feed my starving children packing event at the Morris area elementary school on August. 28th. our shift packed over 100 boxes, enough to feed about 65 children for a year.  We also sang happy birthday to Tammy Sperr, she and her family have been the head of this event since its inception in Morris.

Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended vbs at Good Shepherd Lutheran church on August. 28th earlier in the day I attended the bible study at the church.

donnelly news

Aug. 24th-30th
Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news:
Weather news: after several weeks of mild temps it has gotten very hot again and it is very dry, lot of watering and irrigating going on.  The threshing bee grain has been shocked and wheat harvest is underway.
ST John’s/Kongsvinger news: On August 25th the parish will be leading services under the big top tent at 9 am, on the threshing bee grounds with Rev Rochelle Anderson as guest preacher, and Tom and Pearl Horning providing the music. There will be joint services at 10:15 am at St. John’s on September 1st
Good Shepherd news: On August 28th members of the church will be participating in the Feed My starving Children packing event at Morris area High school from 5:30-7:30 pm to sign up call 287-4367 or 585-6868.
Other church news: the Feed My Starving Children packing event will return to Morris on Aug 27, 28,29th. To volunteer to pack, contact the Morris Evangelical Free church at 589-2808, or Tammy Speer at 589-1729
Faith and First Lutheran churches   will have a pot luck supper at 6 pm on Aug. 24th and following joint services   at 10:30 am on Aug 25th both at Pomme de Terre Park
Death notices: Elena Nessman of Kensington passed away on Aug 12th, her funeral is today (Saturday) at First Lutheran church in Kensington survivors include a great nephew Mark (Michelle) Papesh of Donnelly.
Leon Smith of the Donnelly area passed away on August 17th.
Former Donnelly area resident Bruce Boerner of Holmes city passed away on Aug 14th.
Leroy and Lillian Thorstad of Hoffman passed away on Aug. 18 and Aug. 19th among their survivors are 2 nieces Tamara Stoneburg (Dave) ;Terry (Mark) Krenz; and a nephew Scott (Cathi) Boerne.
Adeline Gustafson of Wheaton passed away on Aug. 9th survivors include her grandson Jay (Laurie) Melberg and Allisa and his daughter Alisha Melberg
Community news: The threshing bee or as we like to call it our “our family reunion” starts this a.m (Saturday) with a pancake breakfast and concludes tomorrow afternoon with a horse and pony pull.
Buttons are available at the gate, there will be flyers available at the gate with a schedule of events and the headquarters building is the depot ph. 246 3272
There will be many events going on both days (horseshoe tournament, sawing, shingle making) etc. there are also a cash, toy tractor, and quilt raffles .Corrine Larson has made a quilt for us.
Any one is welcome to come and provide entertainment such as playing and/or singing, bring something to display, demonstrate etc. 
A second work night to take things down, and put them away will be held on August 27th @ 6:30 pm, however any help of any kind during, or after the bee is always welcome.
There will also be some events at “The Place To Be” today (Saturday), a motor cycle ride this afternoon and a DJ tonight. I know there is at least one rummage sale gong on this weekend too
As of this writing my golf cart is in the repair shop and I am unsure if it will get fixed in time for use at the bee if not I will try and find somebody who would be willing to let me use theirs for handicapped individuals

August James Johnson was born on July 30, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo to Jeremiah and Erica Johnson of Fargo, N.D. Local grandparents and great grandmother are Jerry and Wanda Cin and Lyla Cin of Morris.
Adeyln Sperr was born on August 5th to Adam and Michelle Sperr, grandparents are Don and Tammy Sperr, Tom and Pearl horning, and local great grandparents are Paul and Betty Sperr.
Celebrations:  the eagles’ amateur baseball team won the region 9c tournament and is headed to the state; Mac Beyer is a member of that team.
Tyler Busse won 1st place in the small stock modified demo derby at the Morris fair; Mark Dunn won first place in his class at the Swift Co fair in Appleton last weekend
Sami Searle won the powder full race enduro race at the Stevens county fair in Morris
Keaton, Braeden and Ryanne Long won several grand and reserve championships in 4-h at the Grant County fair in Herman
Dave Lonegran and I were among some of those from the area who attended the soils lab field day in Morris on Aug. 15th.
The threshing bee royalty were among the participants in the cornfest parade in Ortonville on Aug 18th. En route I stopped in Chokio for the fireman’s corn and hamburger feed this was their last parade of the year, as usual they were outstanding ambassadors for the Donnelly area during the past year.
Mark Koepke and I attended the grand opening of the Someplace Safe thrift store in Morris on Aug. 19th; later I attended the visitation for Leon Smith at the funeral home; and in the eve an informal “meet and greet” for Jeff Johnson  republican candidate for governor at Detoy's
As I have stated before an “upside” to a funeral is meeting people you have not seen for a long at Leon’s funeral it was Rev Joel Dahlen, his wife RenĂ©, their daughter Naomi and Rev Steve Olson. Joel and Steve are former pastors at St John's/Kongsvinger.

Weather news: It was perfect weekend for the fair sunny and mild with very comfortable temperatures. Crops continue to look good we hope to shock the grain for the bee soon, did see some wheat being combined.
ST John’s/Kongsvinger news:  There will be joint services at 10:15 a.m. on August 18th at Kongsvinger. On August 25th the parish will be leading services under the big top tent, on the threshing bee grounds with rev Rochelle Anderson as guest preacher, and tom and pearl horning providing the music.
There is a bridal shower at Kongsvinger, for Amanda Werk, bride to be of Sean Sorteberg, today (Saturday) from 10 -11:30 am.  Amanda parents are Randy and Louisa; grandparents are Glen and Gertie Werk.
Good Shepherd news: Vacation Bible School will be held on August 21st.beginning with a prepared supper at 6 pm, for more info call 585-6868. On the 28th members of the church will be participating in the feed my starving children packing event at Morris area High school.
There will be a bible study on the book of Revelation every Wednesday at 9 am, open to everyone in the community.

This week I will highlight Sunday activities; events start out with an open air church service at 9 am followed by classic car registration for the show to follow.  Aft events include the big parade thought downtown and it concludes with the horse pony pull. Thanks to Rose Uhden for volunteering to take over the kiddie parade
Advance sale buttons are on sale at several Donnelly businesses, and the United Farmers and Merchants state bank locations in Morris and Chokio. There are posters up in Donnelly and around the area, and the website http://www.donnellythreshingbee.com has been updated. There is also a threshing bee Facebook page.

 There will be a free food distribution on Aug 20th starting at 5:30 pm at the Morris area hs cafeteria and continuing until gone. Only requirement is that if you eat you qualify

Rendsville 4-h won grand champ reporters and secretary’s book: the stampede club had the reserve championship secretary book.

Benjamin Paul Ackerman and Jase William Ackerman were born on June 24th to Steve and Marie Ackerman of Hawley. .  Grandparents are John and Mona Dickey of Donnelly and Dan and Marie Ackerman of Elgin, N.D. 
Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the bible study and vacation bible school supper at good shepherd Lutheran church on august 7 and 14th
Many of us from the Donnelly area attended some of the activities at the Stevens county fair in Morris over the weekend.
The Donnelly community club had a meeting on Aug. 12th as we put the finishing touches on plans for the bee.  Check the Donnelly news face book page for any last minute updates and changes and for details of other events around town that weekend.
Mark Koepke and I attended the Morris co-op association appreciation supper on Aug 13th at Pomme De Park.

Joan Kopacek and I attended the all committee meeting and joint council meeting at Kongsvinger on Aug 14th, it was reported that we raised over $1,000 at the block party.

Aug. 10th-16th
Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news:
Correction: William Lesmeister’s great grandmother is, Katie Lesmeister.
Weather news: After a long dry spell, we finally got some much needed rain this week, with some very heavy rains on August 6th, accompanied by some golf size hail, fortunately not much damage around the immediate area except for a lot of leaves in the streets. There were reports of a tornado in the area, but apparently it did not touch down.
ST John’s/Kongsvinger news:  There will be joint services at 10:15 a.m. on August 11th, at St John’s and on August 18th at Kongsvinger. Services on the 25th will be under the big top tent, on the threshing bee grounds.
There are two upcoming bridal showers at Kongsvinger, for Audrey McNally, bride to be of Steve Larson, today (Saturday), from 10 am-noon, and for Amanda Werk, bride to be of Sean Sorteberg, on August 17th from 10 -11:30 am  Steve's parents are Don and Algene Larson, grandmother is Bertha Larson.  Amanda parents are Randy and Louisa grandparents are Glen and Gertie Werk.
Good Shepherd news: Vacation Bible School will held on Aug 14,21,28, from 6-8 p.m. ,beginning with a prepared supper at 6 pm, followed by a gathering in the church for some music and message ,and ending with some crafts for the kids   For  more info call 585-6868 .

Celebrations: former Donnelly area resident, Rosie Sax was named one of Grant County‘s outstanding senior citizens.
The Post 29 Legion baseball team was runner ups at the state legion tournament. Team members include Mac Beyer, Bryce Jergenson, Scott Henrichs, and Chandler Erickson. Mac was named to the all district 7 legion tournament team
Brady Jergenson was named to the district 5 Veterans of Foreign Wars baseball all star game.
The 18u soft ball team finished 3rd in their tournament, Becca Holland was a member of that team.
The 14u soft ball team was champs in their tournament, Brooke Geliespe was a member of that team, and her mother Judy was the coach.
Savannah Aanerud was the button winner at the Stevens county fair for the trip.

Brody Jace Hommerding was born June 10th, at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls, to Josh and Karrie Hommerding of Hancock. Grandparents are Gary and Marge Hommerding of Hancock, the late Lynn Hommerding, Dave and Kay Storck of Morris, John and Debbie Van Eps of Blaine. Great grandparents are Issy Foss of Hancock, Marion Hommerding of Melrose, Dorothy Storck, and Geesien Kill both of Morris.
John Thomas Horning was born on July 29th, to Monica Lee and Matthew Horning of Ashland, Wis.    Grandparents are Madeleine and Richard Lee of Denver, Colorado. and Pearl and Tom Horning of Chokio.  Great-grandparents are Mary Lee of Louisville, Kentucky, William E. Tewes of Oak Ridge, Tennessee and Nancy and Roger Horning of Chokio.
Clara Foss of Hoffman passed away on August 4th; survivors include her son Bob (Donna Smith) and family
Mark and I attended Willie's super valu parking lot party on August 2nd at Eastside Park, earlier in the day I attended the salad luncheon at the old #1 Southside
Kaylene and Megan Mecklenburg, and the threshing bee royalty were among the participants in the Flekkefest parade in Elbow Lake on Aug 3rd. Several Donnelly area residents were among those of us who took in some of the other Flekkefest activates in Elbow Lake over the weekend. 
Mark Koepke and Pearl A. Anderson attended the corn and bbq feed at the Legion on Aug. 3rd.
August 4th Mark and I attended the “grilling for the grant county food shelf” event on Aug 4th in Herman, returning to Morris we stopped to visit Cal and Jan Bumgardner at their home in Morris. Mark’s foster dad, Stan Koepke, used to drive truck for him. August 6th we returned to Herman for the kid’s spring fling supper at the fairgrounds, unfortunately the weather ended that event early.
August 5th, Mark koepke and I attended the open house wedding reception for Justin and Amanda Nelson at the Hancock community center, earlier in the evening I attended the “meet the threshing bee candidates” forum at the Donnelly hall.
Little Miss Candidates this year are: Chalee Eystad,  ( Jesse and Misty) grandparents :Jamey and Kathy; great grandparents  are Don Bahr and Marge kleinhans ;Kylie Mau, (Maynard and Lori) grandparents Lyle and Marylin Miller; Hailey Lesmeister,( Casey and Danielle) grandparents Tom and Roxanne great grandparents  Verle and Della Dunn; Kate Lesmeister; Abbigail Athey,(Chris, Rose) Jessalyn Marshall  Brain and Robin Richardson.  A picture of the candidates will be in a future edition of this paper.

donnelly news

Aug. 3rd –9th
Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news:
Weather news: at times during the past week temps felt more like late fall then midsummer. We have had a few rain showers but it is still dry.  Corn and beans look good; I see some of the grain is starting to turn.

ST John’s/Kongsvinger news:  There will be joint services at 10:15 a.m., on August 4 and 18th at Kongsvinger; and August 11 at St John’s.
There are two upcoming bridal showers at Kongsvinger for Audrey McNally, bride to be of Steve Larson, on August 10th from 10 am-noon and Amanda Werk, bride to be of Sean Sorteberg, on August 17th from 10 -11:30 am
Jordan Hughes was baptized at Kong on July 21st parent are Jon and Toni (Kloos) Hughes
Good Shepherd news: Vacation Bible School will held on Aug 7,14,21,28, from 6-8 p.m. More details later. For more info call 589-4345
Starting August 6th at 9 am the women’s bible study will be opened up to everyone.
Other church news: Trinity Lutheran of Alberta will have their annual sweet corn feed on August 4th, from 5-7 p.m. at the church. 
 Community news: The Aanerud Family Reunion will be held August 4th at Pomme de Terre Park’s main shelter starting with a noon pot-luck dinner.
On August 5th, the red hatters will meet at the Herman bar and grill in Herman at 9 a.m., the bookmobile will be in Donnelly at 3:30 p.m., the Rendsville 4-h and city council will meet at 7 p.m. in the fire and city hall in Donnelly.
The Donnelly community club will have a meeting on Aug. 12th at 7pm, at the town hall, as we put the finishing touches on plans for the bee.
There are threshing bee buttons now on sale at the United Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Morris and HD & co in Donnelly. There are some posters up around the area, and the website http://www.donnellythreshingbee.com has been updated. 
The threshing bee is Aug. 24 and 25th and our feature this year is gas engines. A new event this year is double elimination corn hole tournament. The 2nd annual tractor cade will take place at 9 am on Saturday (this is not listed on threshing bee website); otherwise most other events are unchanged from previous years.
Any one is welcome to come and provide entertainment such as playing and/or singing, bring something to display, demonstrate etc. 
We are also looking for somebody to be in charge of the Kiddie parade.
Meet the queen candidates, will be held on Aug. 3rd, at 7 pm, at the town hall.
There will be a wedding card shower in honor of the recent marriage of Justin and Amanda Nelson on August 5th from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hancock Community Center.  Everyone is welcome to come and congratulate the couple! Justin is the son of Doug and Leah Nelson from Hancock, and Amanda is the daughter of Marty and Jennifer Mulcahey of Gelena, IL.  Justin and Amanda are both currently serving in the US Air Force and stationed at Hill AFB in Ogden, Utah.  The couple is registered at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Justin's grandparents are former Donnelly area residents Harvard and Karen Jaeck
I have earned that there will be an auction of classic cars near Donnelly in September; I will post more details on the Donnelly news facebook page later.
Celebrations: .Dick and Suzanne Smith of Donnelly were named Stevens County’s outstanding conservationists of the year 
Natalie Johnston was named to the dean’s list at University of MN Twin Cities
Mark Dunn placed second in his class at the Big Stone county fair demo derby on July 28th
William Lesmeister was born to Casey and Daniele Lesmeister of Donnelly on July 27th. Grandparents are Tom and Roxanne Lesmeister; great grandparents are Katie Lesmeister, and Verle and Della Dunn of Donnelly
Marjorie Armstrong celebrated her 95th birthday on July 28th; Jimmy Koepke will be 70 on August 4th
Several Donnelly area residents were among those of us who attended hort night at west central outreach and Research station on July 25th.  I had an opportunity to visit with Bruce Flaten there, he and his wife have moved into Wheaton now.
July 26th Mark Koepke and I traveled to Donnelly to help with clean up preparations for the community block party, we also attended the block party there on July 27th. I am told that the firemen won by “cheating”.  They decided since it is now a county wide fire department now they would add some members of the Morris fire department who were on a softball team to their team. Earlier in the day I attended the 90th birthday party for Cliff Bjorlin at the Hosanna Worship center.
Despite very chilly temps a good crowd was on hand at big cat stadium for the Irondale band performance on July 26th.
The threshing bee royalty and the Minnewaska rider’s princes Rebekah Aanerud were among the participants in the Watterma parade in Glenwood on July 28th. After the parade I stopped to visit Pr Mike and Pr Maratha Hanson for a few minutes at their house in Glenwood, later in the aft Mark and I attended the Faith Lutheran church picnic at Wells Park.
Verle and Della Dunn were among those who attended the farewell dinner and program for Pr Judy at St John’s on July 28th.

Mark and I attended some of the Crazy Daze activities in Morris on July 31st.
