Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news

  Weather news: It appears that the ground hog’s predication of an early spring were wrong as we have been  subject to very cold temperatures  wind chills  and blizzard like conditions the past few days and the forecast is for more of the same later this week.
ST John’s/Kongsvinger News: There will be joint services on February 24th at St J @ 11 am with the Sunday school kids singing.
 Lenten services will again alternate between   Kongsvinger (February 27th) and St John’s (mar 6th) until March 20th @ 7 pm. There will be coffee and fellowship afterwards .The cash offering will be divided between the local Salvation Army and Evangelical Lutheran Church of America God’s global barnyard

Good Shepherd news: Lenten services will continue every Wednesday @ 7 pm until March 20th, there will be a prepared supper at 6 pm this year instead of a potluck.

The baptismal service for Freddy Hanson will be held at 2 pm on February 24th at St John’s starbuck.

The Northwestern choir and orchestra will be in performance at the Alexandria Convent church (404 Dakota ave.) in Alexandria on Mar 7th @ 7 pm. Matthew Hagestuen is a member of that choir. His parents
Dale and Janet Hagestuen are members of Good Shepherd

World day of prayer at first Lutheran on March 1st
The postponed VFW Auxiliary Valentine Party has been rescheduled for 2 P.M. Thursday the 28th of February at Old # 1 South Side.

Ida Mae Lawson of Meridian, Idaho, passed away on Feb 12. She was preceded in death by her brother Ed Madison and her sister Irene gulbrandson.
Dennis Stahn of Donnelly passed away on Feb 17th.  Survivors include his brothers; Art and Kermit and their families he was preceded in death by his parents K.K. and Agatha (Schwarzrock) Stahn

Chandler Erickson – Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta Boys Basketball was recently named KMRS player of the game. He was also named a student of the quarter at Chokio-Alberta high school and was named to the A honor roll in the 12th grade there
Nicole Gillespie was named to dean’s list at Minnesota State -Mankato her sister Brooke was named to the 8th grade A honor roll at Chokio Alberta
Dona Greiner was one of those  from the Stevens county sheriff’s department receiving an Award of Excellence ~ Community Resilience Award at 48th Annual Governor's Homeland Security and Emergency Management Conference. 
Samantha Larson was named to the grade 12 A honor roll at Herman Norcross high school, Landon (12) and Levin ((8) were named to the B honor roll

The following were named students of the quarter at Morris area high school Kourtney Giese extra mile award (10) Sara Stallman citizenship award (12)
Future Farmers of America results dairy foods; 2nd place Sara Stallman and Melanie Van Horn; were members of that team;  nursery landscaping Beth and Becca Holland; soils 3rd place Brady Jergenson;  Rebekah Aanerud earned a trip to the state with her presentation in the farm bureau discussion meet at the regional meet at ridgewater college in Willmar on 1/23 ; the ag sales team finished first ;Tom Holland 9th individually;  small animal team 5th Melanie Van Horn: Amy Disselkamp ; crops evaluation 3rd ;Brady Jergenson;  food science team 10th at state; Carly Gullickson, Beth Holland ;this earned them a silver award.  those who will be receiving state degree awards are Sara Stallman,  Tom Holland ,Rebekah Aanerud, Tyler Heinrichs, earning proficiency awards were Tom Holland ag mechanics; and repair Jake Moser beef production
The Morris chapter has about 100 members Tom and Beth Holland are officers in the chapter Becca Holland and Jenna Moser are junior officers
Mark Koepke and I had an opportunity to visit Cal and Jan Bumgardner at Super Valu on Feb 14th. She said they recently had two new great children born out in Idaho.  As I mentioned earlier Mark’s Dad used to drive truck for Cal.
Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended Ash Wednesday services at good shepherd on Feb 13th. Earlier in the day I attended the open house at Morris bearing.
Mark Koepke and I attended the Niemackl fundraising breakfast at the Legion in Herman. Ed Ellison said future projects out there include staining the bridge, observation tower, and other things; and putting a new foundation under the granary.  The park day is scheduled for Sept 8th and they may have a workday out there this summer.
On Feb 20th Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended Lenten services; at good shepherd.  Lou says.  John, Barb and Connie and other family member were home this weekend to help her aunt Marlys Alm celebrate her 98th birthday.

Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news

  Weather news: after a few nice days last week we got hit with a major snowstorm on the 10th that dumped about a foot of snow on our area. Most churches and other activities were cancelled on Sun and most schools and some business were closed on Mon as the area started to dig out. We also get a few more inches on the 13th.  Thanks to Mark and the others who helped dig me out this week.

Good Shepherd news: Lenten services will continue every Wednesday @ 7 pm until March 20th, with supper at 6 pm however it will not be potluck this year

New member sun is February 17th
The baptismal service for Freddy Hanson will be held at 2 pm on February 24th at St John’s starbuck.
Services were cancelled at all three churches on Sunday however there are bulletins in the back of the church if you want to pick one up and read the announcements

St. Mary's School will be holding their 7th Annual Dinner/Auction today (Saturday) at The Old No. 1 Southside.  Social hour and silent auction will begin at 5:30pm, with dinner to follow at 6:30pm.

The bookmobile will be in town on February 18th
 Kaylee Lavonne Loher was born to Gerald and Erica Loher III on
           January 22nd.  Grandparents are Gerald Loher Jr.; Jody Loher and Great-Grandmother is Bertha Larson of Donnelly
The post office will be closed on February 18th a quick reminder that there have been changes to the window hours as well as some of personal working there so be sure to stop into there for more info.
Niemakel park pancake fundraiser will be held on February 17th at the legion in Herman from 10:30 am -1 pm

Shadow Olson of Donnelly and Syd Beyer of Morris were named to fall 2012 dean’s list at Minnesota state -Moorhead
Steve Fults and I attended the new horizons Ag services annual meeting on Feb 7th at the prairie inn.  They had another great year with a net local profit of 9.3 million. Earlier in the day I attended the funeral for Ralph Williams at First Lutheran, I also attended his visitation on the 6th at the funeral home, his son Brian was a classmate of mine

Mark Koepke and I visited Geshein Kill at the heritage apartments on Feb 8th
Chester and Gloria Larson and I attended the Concordia band /MAHS symphonic winds concert on Feb 9th at the Morris area elementary school music hall.
While it is never easy to go to visitations and funerals it does sometime afford me the opportunity to see and visit with some people I have not seen for a long time.  such was the case last week at Metra’s funeral on the 4th with Francis VanZomern’s girls Kay and Lois,(former neighbors); at Ralph Williams visitation on the 6th it was with a couple of former classmates Tony and Art cruze; at his funeral on the 7th  my former dentist Dr. Ketterling ,he said his daughter Colleen was in Hawaii.

I have received word  that Morris High school class of ‘73  is planning a 40th class reunion in June, we are looking for names, address, e-mail address, etc. for class members if you are a member of the class or a family member of one and have such info you can e-mail it to Ginger Nohl @ nohlgm@mrs.umn.edu.  or leave info in one of my “mailboxes” at Hd & co and the post office in Donnelly and McCollar jewelry in Morris. Monday noon is the deadline for news in the Donnelly boxes; Tuesday eve for the one in Morris

  Weather news: after spending most of last week in the deep freeze again, temperatures have moderated some this week; but it is still very icy out there and even us hardy Minnesotans are getting tired of it. The groundhog did not see his shadow on Saturday so we are supposed to have an early spring



ST John’s/Kongsvinger News: Ash Wednesday services will be at Kongsvinger on February 13th, at 7 pm thereafter it will alternate between St John’s (February 20th) and Kongsvinger (February 27th) until March 20th . Good Shepherd news: Lenten services start with Ash Wednesday services on February 13th @ 7 pm, and continue every Wednesday until March 20th  there will be no supper on ash Wednesday however there will be one at 6 pm every wed thereafter  however it will not be potluck this year

New member sun is February 17th

St. Mary's School will be holding their 7th Annual Dinner/Auction on February 16th at The Old No. 1 Southside.  Social hour and silent auction will begin at 5:30pm, with dinner to follow at 6:30pm.
The Concordia (Moorhead) band will be in concert in Morris at the elementary music hall today (Saturday) at 7:30 pm. They will be joined by the Morris area hs wind ensemble, free will offering



 An open house bridal shower honoring Melissa Zimmerman, bride to be of Erik Whittemore, will be held today (Saturday) from 9-11 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio. Bring your favorite recipe to share with the couple. The couple is registered at Target and Herberger's

An open house baby shower for Daphne Nicole, infant daughter of Jessica Bergstrom and Joe Oelke will be held today (Saturday), from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Morris Senior Center. Please bring diapers and/or wipes for a special drawing.

There are number of changes occurring at the post office in Donnelly beginning next week.  Nadine Hack who has been the officer in charge has been transferred back to Morris, Mary Shultz will be taking her place, and Rose Athey will remain the rural mail carrier.  Window hours will be from 8 am –12 pm for more info about these and other changes taking place in Donnelly post office talk to Marry in the post office.

Former Donnelly area resident Harriet "Myrta" Diehl passed away on January 31st.  Ruth stand and I were among those who attended her funeral on February 4th at the Morris evangelical Free Church. 



Eleanor "Ellie" Agnes Logan of Morris formerly of Chokio passed away on Feb 2nd survivors include her husband, former Donnelly area resident Sam Logan, and daughter Jerri Erickson.  I was among the many friends and family that attended her visitation at the funeral home on February 2nd.  



Darrell "Bud" Clifton Johnson of Chokio passed away on February 2nd. Survivors include a sister Lorraine Awsumb.  Former Donnelly area residents Phyllis and Dale Smith and Torgney Awsumb are among the brothers and sisters in law that preceded him in death

Stella Charlotte Lair was born on November 30, 2012 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center to Ryan and Jackie (Kill) Lair. Grandparents are Mike and Rhonda Lair of Morris and Nick and Sandy Kill of Morris. Great-grandparents are Barb and Don Rilley of Chokio, Kermit and Karen Stahn of Morris, Jim and Ruth Lair of Rochester, and Jean and Ron Anderson of Nisswa. Great-great-grandmother is Marlys Alm of Morris formerly of Morris


Tom Holland was a triple AAA (arts athletics and academics) winner at Morris area high school



Jim and Lou Eystad served cake and coffee at Good Shepherd on February 2nd in honor of their 59th wedding anniversary

Jody Wilke visited his mom Pearl A. Anderson over the weekend; I visited her on February 5th.

  Weather news: After a week in the deep freeze, temps finally moderated last weekend, however the warmer weather came with a price, freezing rain and snow, making for very difficult driving and walking conditions in the area.

The February newsletter is now out; extra copies are available in the narthex of each church ,also be sure to pick up your copy of the annual in the back of the church if you have not already done so
Good Shepherd news: There will be no adult education on February 3rd
The tithe for February will go to Hurricane Sandy Relief through Hope Community Missional Church in Manahawkin NJ.  The coffee money will go to the Stevens county food shelf backpack program, at Morris area elementary, and St. Mary’s schools

Super bowl party hosanna worship service in Morris on Feb 3rd beginning at 4 pm

There will be new window hours at the Donnelly po effective February 9th from 9 am -12 pm. for details about other changes read the notice in the po or talk to Nadine or Mary in the po
Former   Donnelly area resident Curtis Dean Weinreis of North branch passed away on January 23, survivors include his parents Jim and Doris Weinreis and their family.  Many of you will remember that his family owned and operated the corner cafĂ© where the bar is in Donnelly now
Melvin Waylen Shackelford of Revillo, SD passed away on Jan 22nd survivors include his daughter; JoAnn (Michael) Lonergan of Morris, MN;
 Vern Olson of Ankeny, IA passed away on Jan 24th. Survivors include his son Rev Tim (Cyndi) Olson of Ankeny, IA and their son Jonathan. PR Tim was pastor at St John’s /Kongsvinger in the late ‘90’s.  I have posted his obit on my blog.
Daphne Nicole Bergstrom-Oelke was born on January 8, 2013 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls, to Jessica Bergstrom of Donnelly and Joe Oelke of Cyrus. Grandparents are Becky Bergstrom of Donnelly, and the late Charles Bergstrom and Lorie and Bret Oelke of Barrett, great grandmother is Irene strand of Morris
 John DeLong celebrated his 90th birthday on Jan 31st
Morris area squirt hockey team took 2nd place in a tournament in Wadena; Brady Loge is a member of that team, his dad Ryan is one of the coaches
Jacob Speer (Rollie and Tammi) placed 5th place in the heavyweight division for the tigers in the west central conference wresting meet on Jan 26th 
Kris Wilke (Larry and Peggy)was elected as president of the Minnesota Jaycees on Jan 26th.

Beth Holland was recently inducted into the national honor society at Morris area high school
Jim and Lou Eystad visited her aunt Marlys Alm at the West wing village on Jan 20th Lou says she is doing good
Mark Koepke and I attended the indoor car sale at Heartland Motors on Jan 25th, on the 28th we visited Virginia Long and Corrine Flatten at the sunrise apts then stopped by my aunt pearl’s to wish her a belated happy birthday. Her birthday was Jan 27th
Mark enjoyed a telephone call from his sister Linda in Wisconsin on Jan 30th
