Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news
Weather news: although spring has officially been here for over a week it has not made much of a presence.  Temperatures are still on the cool side meaning that the snow and ice are slow to melt although it is nice to see the sun again
ST John’s/Kongsvinger News: there will be no Sunday school on March 31st
St John’s spring fling is April 13th from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Good Shepherd news: Easter brunch after services on March 31st.
Easter eve services at Morris evangelical Free Church at 6 p.m. on March 30th e church or the good shphered  serivces re about people around here that I do.
Easter egg hunt today (Saturday) at 9:30 A.M., at first Lutheran Morris
Other church news: A true women conference will be held at the Morris Evangelical Free Church on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month
Community news the Donnelly co-op meeting that was scheduled for March 21st has been rescheduled for April 5th beginning with a noon meal at the hall.
Bar bingo at the place to be on April 9th to benefit the Donnelly fire department 
Rod and gun club annual meeting on April 2nd at 6:30 P.M. at the Donnelly hall
The bookmobile will be in town on April 1st at 3:30 p.m. the city council and rendsville 4-h will meet at the fire hall and town hall at 7 P.M.
The Stevens county genealogical society will meet on April 4th at 1:30 P.M. at the Morris library

Benefit for Corey rohloff son of Lowell and Cindy on April 14th 11 A.M.-1 P.M. at the legion in Morris his step grandmother is Ardell (Anderson) Rohloff
4-h news: knowledge bowl  results from Foley junior 1 team coached by Jon Moser placed 3rd and advanced to state , the senior team of which Jonna Moser is a member finished 2nd and they will also advance to the state.
Vivian Fahey of Brooklyn Park passed away on Mar 18th; survivors include a nephew; Craig Awsumb, and a niece; pat (mark) smith and their family both of Donnelly. A copy of her obit is on my blog site
McKenzie smith was named honorable mention in the west central tribune’s all area team
Vance Gullickson and I were among those that attended the seminar at the wulf Cattle farm of rural Morris on March 21st. On March 22nd buyers from all over America and Canada attended the cattle sale at the farm.  The top selling bull went for $48,000 total sales were about $2.2 Million
Heather and Brooke Hufford of phoenix Arizona where here visiting their grandparents Dick and Myrna Hufford of Morris and Rollie and Jan greiner of Donnelly this past week
Tuesday the 26th Kopaceks attended the Delaware Mutual Insurance Company annual meeting and noon dinner in Herman. That evening they were back in Herman for the Science Fair at the School. Jerry’s honorary Granddaughter Jessalyn Marshall received 3rd place in the 4th grade category.

Jeanne Ennen reports that they had a very good crowd on hand again for the Donnelly fire departments annual fish fry.
Mark Koepke and I attended the Kurt Kruize scholarship fundraising supper at the Hancock community center on march 23rd earlier in the day I attended the workshop at the Stevens county museum
Mark Koepke and I attended Palm Sunday services at Good shepherd on March 24th. Afterwards we had cake and coffee in honor of the 2nd anniversary of our being in the church building
On March 25th   while I attended a community education class at the high school Mark Koepke visited with Arden Frank in the Grandview apartment after wards I joined them there.  We wished him an early happy birthday; he will be 70 next month
Mark and I spent some time this week getting some of his belongings moved into his new apartment in the key row building 324 apartment 114
When I was at the spring expo I bought a hamburger from my classmate who was manning the west central cattleman’s booth. He said I had to say they were good in my column he was right the best since what I had at threshing bee last year.

fahey obit

Fahey, Vivian L. (nee Awsumb) Preceded in death by her husband, William; son, Michael; parents, Peter & Marie; brothers, Torgney & Henning. Vivian is survived by her loving family: children, Sharon (James) Roney, Richard (Charlotte), Patrick, Mary (Todd) Nelson; sisters, Gert Brandt & Donna Yochim; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends, all who have been touched by her kind & loving spirit. Vivian was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary #537 in New London MN & a lifetime member of VFW Post #230 in Columbia Heights. The family would like to sincerely thank the caregivers of Hospice of the Twin Cities & Tradition Assisted Living facility in Brooklyn Park MN. Visitation at church 1 hour before service. Funeral Service 11 AM Friday, Mar. 22 at Living Word Christian Center, 9201 75th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park (763-315-7000). Interment to follow at Fort Snelling.

I had to make some major last minute revisions to this after I found the paper would not include Holly week services  I gather since it is advertised in the paper

Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news
Weather news: we had a snowstorm late Thursday/ early Friday that brought more snow and ice to the area causing most schools the area to close. The weather was fairly decent on Friday, Saturday and most of Sunday but enroute home from Herman on Sunday evening it was starting to blow and drift again and by Monday we had a full blown blizzard on our hands, so most schools and other events were canceled and/or postponed again. Tuesday it was time to put the snow removal equipment back to work.  Many thanks to my house guest for shoveling me out again.
ST John’s/Kongsvinger News: joint services at Kongsvinger at 11 a.m., with Holy Communion, and the Sunday school kids will be singing on March 24th; March 31st services at 8:30 a.m., at ST John’s, and at 11 a.m. at Kongsvinger, no Sunday school.
There will be an Easter lily garden at both churches again this year contact the parish office at 246-3211 for more information about that
Good Shepherd news: Palm Sunday services on March 24th Palm, Easter Sunday services at 9 a.m. with the choir singing, followed by an Easter brunch.  
Check the paper for details about Holly week services at these and other churches in the areae church or the good shphered  serivces re about people around here that I do.

Good Shepherd will be ordering flowers (lilies, tulips, bulb garden, and mums) to place in front of the sanctuary on Easter Sunday. Contact Clarice Dieter cdieter@fedtel.net for more info there will also be forms on the back table of the church.

Jesse Vara (vilem and Laurie) recently became an Eagle Scout grandparents are warren and Linda Vara

March 14th Mark Koepke and I visited Bill Underwood in the Morris hospital he was able to return to the west wing village on Friday.
March 15th Chester Larson and I were among those who attended the open house and dinner at Pederson’s Agri serv and the open house at Larson’s Farm supply in Herman. Later that afternoon the Kopacek family and I attended the ST Patricks’ day party at the west wing village in Morris. Afterwards I visited some of the residents there. Ellen wilts was one of the exhibitors at the KMRS spring expo at the Lee center that many of us from the area attended on March 15th and 16th
Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended Lenten services on March 13th and 20th and services on March 17th at Good shepherd and on the evening of the 17th the sing a long at the Eden reformed church in Herman. After services at good shepherd they also attended the adult forum by Ken Eardlson from Lutheran bible camp by Henning. Mark Koepke and I attended services at Kongsvinger and then went to the pancake breakfast at St John’s afterwards
Barry and Nancy Erdahl were among the lions that helped serve their annual pancake breakfast at the Lee center of March 16th.  In the aft Courtney Lehman was one of the “just for kix’s” dancers who performed during the 2nd day of the expo  In the eve Mark Koepke and I attended the pork producer’s supper at the old # 1 Southside
for those of you who have been wondering about Mark Koepke he just signed a lease on a new apartment in Morris I will have more info in the future in meantime call him here.

Obituary for Vivian Strand

Vivian Suzelle (Stark) Strand, 90, of Toddville, died Thursday, March 7, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2013, at Toddville Free Methodist Church, Toddville, IA, by Rev. Mark Lofquist. The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, also one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial: Lafayette Cemetery, rural Alburnett.

Survivors include her children, Ron (Katy) Strand of Columbia, TN, Dale (Patsy) Strand of Toddville, Valerie (David) Morris of Salina, KS, and Jody (Janice) Strand of Toddville; daughter-in-law, Sara Strand of Marion; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; her son, Merrill; and siblings, Virgil Stark, Gordon Stark, Harold Stark, Adele Winter, Dagny Prickett, and Ethel Magnuson.

Vivian was born January 20, 1923, in Land Township, rural Grant County, Minnesota, the daughter of Axel and Lilly (Johnson) Stark. She graduated from a W.S.C.A. agriculture school in Minnesota. Vivian married Edisteen Strand in October, 1943. Ed died November 10, 1997. She and Ed made their home and ran a dairy farm together for 22 years, along with Ed’s brother Milton and his wife, Virginia Strand. In 1969, Ed and Milt established Strand’s Arabian Stables, which Ed and Vivian operated together until 1997.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Toddville Free Methodist Church in Vivian’s memory.

Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news this edition is dedicated to the memory of my Mom who passed away on Mar 14th 1994
Weather news: even us hardy Minnesotans are getting tired of the weather especially after the awful weekend we had. It started raining Saturday a.m., turned to snow in the afternoon, then by evening everything froze, making everything a big icy mess. Most church services and other events in the area were cancelled on Sunday due to the extremely icy roads, and no travel was advised in Stevens County. The sun came out Monday and melted some ice and that plus the hard work of area road crews meant that by late afternoon/ early evening roads in the area were much better than I expected.
ST John’s/Kongsvinger News: Lenten services will conclude with services at St John’s on March 20th at 7 p.m. There will be coffee and fellowship afterwards  
St. John’s in Donnelly is serving a “St. Patrick’s Day Pancake Breakfast” 10 A.M. -1 P.M., March 17th
The postponed St. John’s welcome for Mary Schultz and daughters Olivia and Sofia is rescheduled for the 17th after 8:30 service.
Holy week schedule: March 24th joint services at Kong at 11 a.m. with Holy Communion and the Sunday school kids will be singing; March 28th   , supper at 6 p.m. at Kongsvinger followed by an informal communion service at 7 p.m., first communion students will be recognized. March 29th, pancake supper at 6 p.m.; followed by Good Friday services at 7 p.m. at St John’s; March 31st services at 8:30 a.m. at ST John’s, and at 11 a.m. at Kongsvinger, no Sunday school.

Bishop Jon Anderson will give a forum at First Lutheran in Morris on March 17 at 9:30 a.m.

I have been informed that former Donnelly area resident Vivian (Mrs. Ed) Strand passed away on March 7 in Toddville, Iowa. I have posted a copy of her obit on my blog.
Mike Flugel of Alex passed away on Mar 10th survivors include a cousin David Flugel
Kody Armstrong was named to the B honor roll at West Central Area H.S.
On March 12th Joan Kopacek, Helen Kill, Janet Malo and Lynn Schulz traveled to the Capital to hear Governor Mark Dayton and others talk about Veteran affairs. Afterwards they met with Rep. Jay McNamar and Sen. Tory Westrom. On the way home they stopped for lunch in Monticello where they were joined by Joan’s cousin Cindy Dumpprope, granddaughter of former Donnelly area resident Leonard Aanerud.
The Stevens county Genealogical Society had their first meeting of the year on March 7th at the library the next meeting is April 4th
About a dozen of us from the Good Shepherd family braved the icy roads to attend the northwestern college orchestra and choir concert at the Alexandria Covent church on March 7th
Scott and Beth Heinrich and I were among those who attended the 90th birthday open house for John Delong at the LaFave House in Morris on March 10th
Mark Koepke and I attended the Donnelly Community club’s annual meeting on Mar 11th at the hall.  We had a very good year thanks in part to the best threshing bee in recent years.  The current board members whose terms expired were reelected to it. The next meeting is April 8th at the hall. A reminder that this year’s bee is August 24 and 25th and the feature will be gas engines .If you were unable to attend but would like to become a member or renew your membership you can send your dues to the Donnelly community club Donnelly MN .  Suggestions and ideas for the bee and/or other events are always welcome the club’s e-mail address is donnellythreshingbee@runestone.net ; the next meeting is on April 8th.

Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news
Weather news:  hopes for an early spring have been dashed by the return of winter. Several inches of snow, plus blowing and drifting meant a lot of schools were closed and other activities cancelled in the area on the 5th.
ST John’s/Kongsvinger News: Lenten services will conclude with services at Kongsvinger (March 13th) St John’s (March 20th) @ 7 pm. There will be coffee and fellowship afterwards  
St. John’s in Donnelly is serving a “St. Patrick’s Day Pancake Breakfast” 10 A.M. -1 P.M. Sunday March 17th, they will have their annual St Pats day party on the 15th at the west wing village at 2 pm
The March parish newsletter is now out extra copies are available in the narthex of both churches. 
Good Shepherd news: Lenten services will continue every Wednesday @ 7 pm until March 20th with a pot luck supper that eve. The supper on the 20th will be potluck.
The first sun of every month will be food shelf Sunday with a collection box set up in hall.

The rendsville 4-h club meeting that was scheduled for March 4th has been rescheduled for March 11th @ 7 pm.
Townships in Minnesota will have their annual meeting and elections on March 12th check with your local town clerk or the county auditor for times and locations

Chandler Erickson was named snow king the Chokio-Alberta H.S. He and another student were part of a skills fest team that placed third in a skills fest completion in

Karenna Johnson (PR. Mark and Sarah) was named grand champion at the Springfield MN elementary science fair 
Travis Fults (Randy & Joan) won second place in the bears division of Morris cubs pack 467 Pinewood Derby at Heartland motors recently; he also won an award for best decorated car
The tiger youth wrestlers finished in third place in a torment at new London-Spicer, Austin Raths and Maddix Erickson were members of that team

The following were members of various business professional of America teams at Morris area H.S. that that won awards at the region 7 conference at Alexandria Technical school (* advanced to the state competition) John * and Justine * Huebner, James Burke*, Sam Heinrichs ,Dalton Lupke, Bo*and Carly Gullickson, Brady Jergenson, Kourtney Giese*. Kourtney, Bo, Carly, and Justine were named torch bearers.
Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended services the west wing village on February 28th   with PR Mike Hanson officiating; afterwards we had lunch together at the common cup coffee house
I attended the open house at someplace safe on March 1st.
Ellen, Carrie, and Kellie Wilts and I were among those of us who attended the Good Shepherd family ice skating party at the Lee center on March 3rd

Next edition March 2nd-8th
Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news

  Weather news:  after several weeks of snow, cold, and icy conditions the weather has moderated some and it has been nice enough to be out and about some.
ST John’s/Kongsvinger News: Lenten services will again alternate between     St John’s (March 6th) and Kongsvinger (March 13th) until March 20th @ 7 pm. There will be coffee and fellowship afterwards  
St. John’s in Donnelly is serving a “St. Patrick’s Day Pancake Breakfast” 10 A.M. -1 P.M. Sunday March 17th, they will have their annual St Pats day party on the 15th at the west wing village at 2 pm
Good Shepherd news: Lenten services will continue every Wednesday @ 7 pm until March 20th, there will be a prepared supper at 6 pm this year instead of a potluck.

Ken Erlandson the Director of Lutheran Island Bible Camp near Henning MN will give a presentation on March 3rd during adult education hour about the camp, the first drive to collect shoes for them was such a success we plan to do it again in the near future.
 On March 3rd there will be a family skating party at the Lee community center from 2-4 pm. bring your own skates of there will be some for rent. if not interested in skating join us for hot drinks and treats in the lunch room.

The Northwestern choir and orchestra will be in performance at the Alexandria Convent church (404 Dakota ave.) in Alexandria on March 7th @ 7 pm. Matthew Hagestuen is a member of that choir. His parents Dale and Janet Hagestuen are members of Good Shepherd

Ida Mae Lawson of Meridian, Idaho, passed away on Feb 12. Survivors include a nephew former Donnelly area resident Billy Madison
Former Donnelly area resident Irving Sperr of Herman passed away on Feb 23rd
Survivors include a brother Neal of Donnelly
Henning Awsumb of Donnelly passed away on Feb 24th survivors include his son Craig daughter (pat) mark) smith and their family many of you will remember that he was a part of the Kongsvinger men’s quartet for 50+ years
Former Pepperton Township resident Wynette “Nettie” [Mrs. Paul] Strubbe age 87 died February 22 at the Frazee Care Center. Survivors include Lynn [Linda] Strubbe and Cora Strubbe.
Ryker Emmett Jones was born on Feb 13th to Paige strand and Jordan jones grandfather is Kelly Strand great grandfather is Vern strand of Morris
Matthew Lesmeister and Lacey Hanson announce they will be wed April 2, 2013 in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Parents are Jerry and Jane Lesmeister and the late Jeanne Lesmeister; grandmother is Shirley Holman

Ellen and Glen Hefty of Verona, Wisconsin are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Lauren Hefty, to Michael Burke, son of Pat and Carol Burke of Donnelly.
Beth Holland, a junior at the Morris Area Schools, has been selected as one of the Minnesota State High School League’s 2013 ExCEL Award recipients she will be recognized during the state girls’ bb tournament. Bryce Jergenson was also nominated to represent Morris area schools
Sara Stallman was given a character roundup award by pizza ranch
Jim and Lou Eystad attended the funeral service for Dennis stahn at st John’ Donnelly on February 22nd, I attended his visitation and prayer service on the 21st at the funeral home. Earlier in the day I attended the open house at accelerated chiropractor and snap fitness in Morris.
Steve Fults and I attended the Westrom/ Dutcher town hall meeting at the pizza ranch in Morris on Feb 22nd in the eve we attended the Stevens county Republican Party.   A special thank you was extended to our long time treasurer Andy Brevig who decided to retire this year.
Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the baptism of Freddy Hanson at st John’s starbuck on feb 24th.  Later I attended the visitation and prayer service for Orval Bratten at the funeral home; his son Kevin is a member of good shepherd.  In the eve I attended the worldview conference at Morris area elementary music hall.
Mark koepke and I attended the community meal at faith Lutheran on February 25th later I attended the 2nd night of the world view conference at the Morris Evangelical Free church
George and Elaine Harstad and I attended the visitation for Irving Speer at Bethel in Herman on February 26th, and later the visitation and prayer service for Henning Awsumb at the funeral home, Mark Koepke and I attended his funeral at Kongsvinger on Feb 27th in the eve I attended supper and Lenten services at good shepherd
