As I was finishing my column last week it started to rain again which then turned to snow on Fri. This week started out promising with several days of sunshine but then it rained again on Tue. The forecast calls for sunny warm days this weekend hopefully it will come true. Some farmers were able to take advantage of the nice weather to get some beans and corn out but progress has been very slow. A neighbor said some of the corn they picked was about 28%. I talked to a friend who raises cattle and it has been hard on them too dealing with all the mud in the feedlots. He said they were fortunate as they can chop a lot of their corn.

The weather during the past week has been almost a repeat of last week; cloudy, cool, and wet although this week we had snow rather than rain. I cannot remember the last time we had this much snow this early in the year although thankfully it has all melted. We also had a hard freeze so the crop growing season is done. Area farmers have been making use of the periods of semi-decent weather we have had in the last week to get the crops out but there is still a lot beans left to be picked.

When I was doing some research in the genealogy room of the library in the afternoon I met a former Donnelly area resident Willie Dornquist from Red Wing so we had an opportunity to visit for a while.
