MEYER MISSION NEWS

The Lord is my Strength

August 2010

Dear Friends:

With a great deal of joy we reflect upon our Lord’s goodness to Linda and me over the years he has given us as career missionaries serving with LCMS World Mission and partnering also with LCMS World Relief and Human Care.

The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped. Psalm 28:7

We thank God that he has given us the privilege to serve Him sixteen years in Africa. It is truly an act of divine grace that we could have such a challenging, exciting, rewarding and growing experience. We thank our friends in Africa and America for the joy of working with so many fine Christian men and women.

Traveling in big cities to remote villages at the end of a dirt path has been a remarkable experience. At every location we have reached, there have been people who received us so cordially. The warmth and hospitality of Africans encouraged and invigorated us. The variety of housing and accommodations was awesome; at one time we had the joy of being with LCMS volunteer Sue Hasselbring out in a bushman’s camp in a cattle post in Botswana’s Kalahari Desert. Looking back at our experiences thus far, we can only say, “Thank you Lord”. We say with St. Paul in 2 Corinthians 2:14 “I thank God, who always leads us in victory because of Christ.”

Reflecting upon our last days in Sierra Leone is a study in feelings and emotions as we began sorting documents in our office with frustration at the sheer volume of material accumulated over several years. Anxiety describes our feelings as we sorted and packed our belongings trying to decide what item deserved a trip back to USA and what items should be given away, noting the days were moving on quickly and our departure date was coming sooner and sooner. Sadness describes our feelings as we said goodbye to friends we had known in West Africa. We felt gladness that our time of being away from family and friends was coming to an end, and we hoped to spend far more time in the future with children, grandchildren and friends.

In the photos included in this letter you will see some of the activities we have enjoyed since our return to the USA at the end of May.

Thank you Together in Mission (TIM) supporters

Thank You to those congregations who have supported us through the Together in Mission (TIM) program. Our support under the TIM program ends in October 2010. We ask that you continue supporting LCMS missionaries. There are many great people who need continued prayer and financial support to be able to serve. Possibly you already know individuals and families who you would like to support. If your congregation needs ideas, please contact the TIM coordinator for LCMS WM, Debra Feenstra (ic_feenstdd@lcms.org).

Thank you to all supporters

Linda and I are most appreciative of the kind prayers on our behalf, personal encouragement and financial support of so many dear Christian friends. Some of you supported us through LCMS World Mission and others supported projects of LCMS World Relief & Human Care that enabled us to travel and train folks in many locations of West Africa. Please continue to support LCMS missionaries and projects.

What’s next?

Linda and I have been asked to serve as volunteers in Tanzania and possibly Ethiopia for several weeks in January, February or March of 2011.

Rev. Claude Houge, who is the LCMS World Mission Area Facilitator for East Africa, asked us to do agricultural training and has submitted the following project to help cover costs for airline tickets, training materials, transportation, food and lodging within the countries of service. This project is revenue dependent, meaning that if funding does not come in, the teaching we hope to do will not be funded. The LCMS World Mission project description is as follows:

Agricultural Project Consultancy – East Africa # 710-61007

Agricultural consultancy provides East Africa Lutheran church bodies the ability to build capacity for sustainability and self-sufficiency. Church bodies are helped by LCMS volunteer agricultural consultants. The church gathers local farmers so that they can learn better methods of farming in line with Biblical principles in family living and resource management. Revenue Dependent: $16,500

For those of you who are willing and able to financially support this agricultural training, please send your support for us to either Mission Central or LCMS World Mission. See their addresses below:

PRAYER REQUESTS

Thank God for safe travel as we arrived back to Minnesota on May 29th with all of our luggage.

We thank God for His guidance and protection as we served in several countries within Africa. Pray that the seeds of the Gospel that were planted will grow into a harvest of souls for the kingdom of God.

Please pray for safety as we travel and thank supporters face to face over the next months and years.

Please pray for the Lord’s guidance as we have opportunity to serve as LCMS WM short-term volunteers in East Africa in 2011.

2 Corinthians 5:15 “He died for all people so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and rose again.”

In Jesus our Savior and Lord,

Lyla Jystad

Lyla Jystad, 83, Rochester, MN formerly of Dilworth, died August 12, 2010 at Sunrise Cottages in Rochester.

Lyla June Larson, the daughter of Theodore and Esther (Boraas) Larson, was born on March 7, 1927 in Wanamingo, MN. She grew up in Wanamingo and began working at her father’s drug store at the age of six. Lyla proudly completed high school and attended college. In 1949, she graduated from Augsburg College earning her BA degrees in music, education and biology. She began her teaching career in Evansville, MN where she worked for two years and then taught at Groveland Elementary School in Minnetonka, MN for the following two years. On August 25, 1951, Lyla was united in marriage to Torgney Jystad. The couple made their first home in Eagle Bend, MN, where Torgney served as pastor of five congregations. Throughout the years, Lyla and Torgney served many parishes including Morris/Donnelly/Cyrus; Christ the King Lutheran, Moorhead, Bethlehem Lutheran, Ulen, and later Faith Lutheran, Delavan. Upon retirement, they returned to a country home near Ulen to make their permanent residence. Torgney, with Lyla at his side, continued to serve as visitation pastor for Grace Lutheran in Ada. Following Torgney’s death in 2000, Lyla remained at home for about a year at which time she moved to Dilworth, MN. She continued to make her home there until 2008 when she moved into Fairmont Care Center, later Eventide in Moorhead, and most recently, Sunrise Cottages of Rochester. Lyla was passionate about her faith and her music. Over the years she worked closely with Torgney helping with his ministry by teaching Bible School, Sunday School, and directing various choirs. Lyla also taught piano lessons as well as playing for church and various other events. She loved to cook for her family and was a talented baker, known for her pies. Lyla greatly enjoyed the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. For many years, Lyla also helped educate children within the Dilworth Elementary School working with the Foster Grandparents Program. She was proud to be called “Grandma Lyla” by so many little ones. Lyla truly treasured her family, her friends, and the Lord.

Blessed be the Memory of Lyla Jystad

Lyla is survived by three sons: John of Minneapolis, MN, Dr. Philip (Shelly) of Jamestown, ND, and Steve (Sue) of Zumbrota, MN; one daughter, Ellen (Bryan) Green of Dilworth; and ten grandchildren; Maren (and husband Ben), Matthew, Leah, Jenna, Dana, Nick, Turi, Siri, Torger, and Inga.
