DONNELLY NEWS

Next edition Oct 30th-
Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news. This week’s edition is dedicated to the memory of my Dad who passed away 5 years ago on Oct 31st.
Weather news: after a mostly sunny, warm, and dry month the weather has taken an 180o turn with rain/snow, heavy winds, and much cooler temps. My neighbor said they finished their corn harvest last week but there are still many fields of corn yet to be picked in the area.

STJ/KONG PARISH NEWS: the parish will have joint services at Kong on Oct 31st at 11 am with the ss kids singing again. It will be followed by a light lunch and afterwards at about 12:30 pm Wayne Grunklee of Thrivent will give a presentation about the proposal to establish an endowment fund in both churches. The endowment fund will be discussed and voted on at each congregation’s annual meetings next year.
Presentation of faith statements by members of the confirmation class will be held on Nov 3 @ 7 pm at St J (there will be no confirmation classes that day). confirmation will be held on Nov 7th. Our confirm ands this year are Mark Dunn (Lowell and Sandy) Bryce Jergenson (rob and Peg) and Brandon Pray (Dave and Cora)
There will be reception for the confirmands following services in the Kong church basement sponsored by the Kong Thrivent finical group. An open house and dinner in honor of Mark Dunn’s confirmation will be held on Nov 7th following services at the Kong parish hall all members of kong are welcome.

St J beef supper will be held at the ST J parish hall on Nov 9th from 4:30 pm to 7 pm. Advance tickets may be purchased at the parish office.
Parish bible study “I wonder as I wander” will be held on Nov 10th, 17th, Dec 1 and 9th. Studies will be at St J from 10:30 am -11:30 am and Kong from 7-8 pm.

Lefse making day will be held at Kong on Nov 13th beginning at 9 am. If you can help please bring 10 lbs of russet potatoes peeled not cooked and rsvp to Elaine Harstad at 677-2784 by Nov 10th.
Mutual ministry committee will be held on Nov 11th at 7 pm at St J.
Madison Kahler was baptized at Kong on Oct. 23rd. her parents are Keith and Sara Kahler of elk river MN. Grandparents are Milferd and Janice Kahler of Morris, Eugene stoneburg of Starbuck and Sandy Loycano of mlps; great grandmother is Shirley Henrichs of Milaca.
Wam will meet on Nov 6th at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in starbuck beginning with coffee at 9:30 am program at 10 am. The program will be a DVD presentation by rev smith delivered at the recent Lcmc convention.
Harvest supper at faith in Morris on Nov 10th 4:30 -7 pm
There will be two birthday parties in Morris today (sat):

An open house 80th birthday party for Jerry Schmidt will be at the legion from 1-5 pm today (sat). He is Gail Kloos’s father

An open house in honor of Clarence giese’s 90th birthday party will be held from 2-4 pm at the senior center.

Also today there will be a dedication service of the new Thrivent builds home at 307 w 7th st at 10 am.

There will be a Halloween party at the Donnelly hall on Oct 31st from 2-4 pm.


Due to the closing of sax’s café the red hatters will now meet at “the place to be” in Donnelly on Nov 1st at 1 pm. They will have a pizza party and members are asked to bring a favorite holiday recipe. Everyone is welcome to attend. I do need to clarify that this not a new business but the “liquor store” under new ownership.

Nov 2nd is Election Day most voters in the Donnelly area will vote at the town hall in Donnelly. Check with your local county auditor for your local voting place and times. Besides the candidates for mayor (Walt Biesterfeld) and council seats (rose Athey, Zach Eystad, Howard Kill, mike Higgins)in Donnelly, there are several current and former Donnelly area residents are running for office in the area: Jason strand, Herman city council, Elroy frank Douglas county commissioner ,Jeanne Ennen st co commissioner and Bennet smith dist. 11a rep.

An open house baby shower for Wyatt Hagen, son of Jeff and Kelsey Hagen, grandson of Lynn and Sheila Schulz, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 2-4 p.m. at Zion Church in Hoffman


The st co gen soc will meet in Nov 4th in the community room of the library in Morris at 1:30 pm. There will be election of officers

Sandy Dunn asked me to announce that the 2nd annual trim a tree contest will be held on Dec 4 and 5th at the Donnelly hall. I will have more details in a latter column.

Skylar Rayne Van Zomeren, was born October 12, 2010 in Bismarck, North Dakota, to Austin and Roxanne Van Zomeren of Bismarck Grandparents are Mark and Marie (Staples) Bonebrake, Minot, North Dakota, Robert and Debbie Van Zomeren, Graham, Washington; John and Lucille Hammer, Braddock, North Dakota, and VERY proud aunt, Brooke Van Zomeren, Minot. Great-grandparents are Howard and Joanne Staples, Chokio, and Frances Van Zomeren, Morris formerly of Donnelly

Lester Steuck of Chokio passed away on Oct 22nd. Among the family members that survives him, is an aunt Julette Banister of Donnelly and her family.

Jim Lesmeister of Cyrus passed away on Oct 25th a nephew, tom (Roxanne) Lesmeister and their family is among the family members that survive him. He was preceded in death by a daughter in law Jeanne Anderson of Donnelly.




Congratulations to the MAHS FB team that won the wcc championship. Justin Stallman, tom Holland and Pat Uhpoff are members of that team.


Oct 21st I attended the fall festival at sky view court and afterwards visited Veronica smith in her apt.

Andy brevig and I were among those who attended the Byberg for congress rally at Detoy’s In Morris on Oct 22nd. Earlier in the day I enjoyed the customer appreciation breakfast at Willie’s sv.

Paul Sperr and I were among the volunteers who helped Torrey Westrom distribute his campaign literature in the area on Oct 23rd. afterwards we enjoyed pizza and a time of fellowship together at the pizza hut. In the aft I traveled to Hancock for the Grammentz auction. In the eve I attended the 40th anniversary celebration for Lloyd and Jan Anderson at the eagles club.

Jim and Lou Eystad and I were among those who attended the community meal at the senior center on Oct 25th. After the meal I attended the levy meeting at the Maes music hall. I also visited my cousin Bev Hurlbut at legacy living.

donnelly news

Next edition Sept 11th – 17th
Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news. Please note that if you are planning on attending an event I have listed here it is always a good idea to double check the info before doing so as I occasionally do get the time or date wrong.

Weather news: the cool nights and days we have had in the past week reminds us that summer is ending and fall will be here soon. It started to rain about mid aft Mon and kept on most of the aft and into the eve. I drove home in rain all the way from rollag. The crops looked as good up there as they do down here.

STJ/KONG PARISH NEWS: Sept 12th is rally sun with SS at 9 am and joint services at St J at 10:15 am followed by a potluck dinner. The fall schedule will resume on Sept 19th with services at Kong at 8:30 am ss at 9:45 am and services at St J at 11 am
The Sept newsletter is now out extra copies are available in the narthex of each church
The mission start good Shepherd Lutheran church (MSGLC) in Morris is will celebrate rally sun on Sept 12th with the installation of teachers and presentation of bibles to the third graders.
Many other churches in the area will also have Rally sun services and special activities on Sept 12th.
With fall here it is also time for church suppers/dinner st Charles in Herman (Sept 12th) and the Herman UM (Oct 17th) are just some of the area churches who will have one in the near future.
There will be a gospel sing a long at the Eden reformed church in Herman on Sept 12th at 6 pm and Immanuel of rural Barrett on Sept 15th at 7pm
The play “Godly Women out of History will be presented at Trinity Lutheran church in Cyrus on Sept 12th at 3 pm. It will also be presented at Kong during KCLW guest night on Sept 26th.

WAM will meet today (Sat) AT St J of rural Starbuck. Coffee will be at 9:30 am, the program at 10 am. A delegate who attended the recent North American Lutheran Church constituting convention for the new church will bring a report. For more info call 795-2477
The musical group “go fish” will be in concert at the Lake Geneva Christian center (605 Birch Ave) in Alex on Sept 19th at 4:30 pm. No reserve seating and no tickets required. This sponsored by the local Thrivent agents in the area you can call the Morris office at 589-1731 or your local Thrivent agent for more info.
The parish is collecting Items for LWR and/or Marie Sandvick center. A list of acceptable items is included in the Sept newsletter, or you can obtain it from the parish office. They should be brought to either church by Sept 19th.
St J fall festival will be held on Oct 9th. They are looking for craft and other items to sell (no clothes) so if you are doing some fall cleaning keep them in mind. I will have more info later.
There are two events happening today (Sat)
An open house baby shower for Ellery Rose Spohr, daughter of Crystal Henrichs and Matt Spohr, will be held from 2-5 pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Morris. Everyone is welcome including men

There will be a reunion of the Alberta High School class of 195l. It will be held at 5 PM at the Ranch House Inn in Morris. Friends welcome to drop in. This was the last class that included the Donnelly Bunch---Mary (Olsen) Dripps, Suzy (Olsen) Ziemmer, Richard Goldenstein and Duane Ruff (deceased).

An open house diaper shower (diapers and bathroom supplies) for Brynnlee Mae Siegel, daughter of Darrik and Misty Siegel, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, 10 a.m. to noon at the home of Janet and Steve Sauter, 17411 US Hwy 59, Morris

The Donnelly com club will meet at the town hall on Sept 13th at 7 pm. As always we welcome any comments, ideas, or suggestions about the past and/or future bee or other events. A quick reminder: next year’s feature will be John Deere.

Learning unlimited will meet on Sept 15th at 1:00 pm at the Morris public library community room; author David keeny will give a presentation based on his book "MN goes to war”

There will be a Vietnam War era veterans appreciation day at the Old #1 Southside on Sept 12at 2 pm

Congratulations to Steve Engelby who was part of the winning team in the Hoffman fishing league.

Congratulations to following 4-h er’s, who won awards the MN State fair livestock encampment: Jacob and Jenna Moser; Natalie Johnston; Shauna Kill; Mackenzie smith, Kendra Sperr. Natalie and Jake were members of the general livestock judging team that finished 5th overall, second in beef and 5th in sheep. Jenna also received purple ribbon auction scholarship. A complete list of awards can be found in the Sept 4th edition of the M s-t.

Congratulations to Laura Thielke who received the Mary Martelle Memorial award at UMM in Apr. Her parents are Delano and Linda Meyer



Steve Fults and I were among the large crowd that attended the metal to money sale near Hoffman on Sept 3rd. Later I stopped into the good Sam home to visit with Thelma Leegard.

A 12 horse hitch on a plow, a ride on the merry go round were along with many interesting displays , exhibits and events that were part of the 56th annual WMSTR that Dennis Kruize and I attended in rollag over the Labor Day weekend. At the Hawley Lutheran church food booth I ran into my classmate Joe Grotjohn who I had not seen since graduation

Jerry and Joan Kopacek recently returned home after a tour bus trip to Holden Village, Washington, in the Northern Cascade Mountains. While there they had an enjoyable time relaxing and hiking. On the way out they took in the Medora ND musical. On their way back they stopped in Yellowstone National Park and were witness to the extremely rare event of Old Faithful and Beehive geysers erupting simultaneously. But the biggest highlight for them was getting to meet for the first time, Jerry's cousin Arlene and husband Ray Poche' from Ravensdale WA, who drove over 2 hours to Wenattchee so they could have supper together.

Sam and Dorothy Johrdheim traveled to Avon on Sept 3rd to visit Jeff and Gayle Gibson and family, en route home they stopped in Alex to visit Odell and Joann Christenson

Pearl A. Anderson spent some time On Sept 5th in Norcross visiting Lauren Lennox and family.

donnelly news

Next edition Sept 4th – 10th
Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news. Please note that while I try to be as accurate as possible in reporting on upcoming events in the area I do occasionally get the date and/or time of an event wrong. So if you are planning on attending an event I have listed it always good to double check the info.
Weather news: my weekly weather report is beginning to sound like a broken record lots of sunshine and mild temps combined with timely rains continues to be very beneficial for the crops. Beans are starting to turn and harvest will probably begin in a couple of weeks. The wheat we thrashed at the bee sure looked good.

The latest edition of Meyer mission news is now out. Copies are posted in the narthex of each church and on my blog. They are raising support for a short term mission trip to Tanzania in early 2011

The play “Godly Women out of History will be presented at Trinity Lutheran church in Cyrus on Sept 12th at 3 pm. It will also be presented during KCLW guest night later this month.


Due to the Labor Day weekend WAM will meet on Sept 11th AT St J of rural Starbuck. Coffee will be at 9:30am, the program at 10 am. A delegate who attended the recent North American Lutheran Church constituting convention will bring a report.

 

Due to a schedule conflict there will be no St co Gen soc mtg in Sept the next mtg will be in Oct.

The red hatters will meet on Sept 7th at 9 am at Sax’s café in Donnelly note change to day due to the Labor Day holiday.

Please note that time and space do not permit me to list all the org (city council, firemen, 4-h etc.) which have monthly meetings so if you are interested in any of them please contact a member of that org for specific times and dates.

Most Donnelly business will be closed on Mon in observance of Labor Day and the bookmobile will not be in town its next visit is Sept 20th.

Morgan Rose Grossman was born June, 17, 2010 to Trent and Robyn Grossman. Grandparents are Tim and Tammie Grossman of Alexandria, and Dennis and Gail Andrewski of St. Paul. Great grandparents are Marie and the late Clarence Grossman; Bob and Myrna Tomalla, Theodore & (late) June Swanson, Louise and the late Raymond Andrewski.

Ellery Rose Spohr was born on August 14, 2010 at Stevens Community Medical Center, Morris to Crystal Henrichs and Matthew Spohr of Morris. Grandparents are Rollie and Deb Henrichs of Morris and Wayne and Camille Spohr of Hancock. Great grandparents are Ron and Char Castor, and Millie Lesmeister of Morris and Ruth Spohr of Hancock.

Congratulations to the 2010-11 threshing bee royalty Queen Paige Strand, Princes Sara Stallman, Little Miss Donnelly Bailey Armstrong, Little Miss princes Logan Mau.

Congratulations to Herb and Carol Kloos for being named grand marshals of the Donnelly threshing bee parade. He is retiring from his county commissioner job at the end of the yr.

Congratulations to the Chris Athey sb team which won the tri county traveling league team tournament, members of that team were Lucas Schmiesing, Chris Athey, and Paul Daly

Congratulations to Shawn Knutson of Donnelly who took third place in the 2x4 demo derby at the st co fair, brad Hable took third in the 4x4 pickup demolition derby.

Congratulations to Jonathon Olson who was recently sworn into the U.S. army. His parents are Rev Tim and Cyndi Olson of Rockford IL formerly of Donnelly. His dad says he is going to ostu training at fort Knox KY He will be a scout for armored vehicles.

The following were winners at the threshing bee horseshoe glen werk won his class and Father Pete finished third in his class. Donny Sperr, Scott and Brianna Neumann (our former Donnelly princess) won trophies in the tr. pull, Herb Nelson won the traveling parade trophy and he finished third in the pony pull. Athey construction defeated the Donnelly dukes for the sb championship.

Aug 26th I visited Mary Drips at her home in Morris later I enjoyed a root beer float at eul’s they were celebrating their 80th anniversary. En route home I stopped at the threshing bee grounds to look around.

Jon and Jack Kopacek and I were among the many that worked on the grounds on Aug 27th to get everything ready for the bee.

A presentation on country churches by Doug Ohman on sat eve and the parade and the horse/pony pull on sun were some of the many highlights of the 45th annual Donnelly threshing bee that Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended on Aug. 28th & 29th. We had good crowds both days, thanks to everyone who came to help us celebrate

Steve Fults and I were among those who enjoyed the NHAS picnic supper at the Pomme De Terre Park. Later we attended the St Co Rep central committee meeting at Detoy’s. It was decided that we would invite tom emmer, Lee Byberg and others to attend a fall rally/town hall mtg in early Oct.

A good crew was on hand again for the second threshing bee work night on Aug. 31st, thanks to the co-op for letting us use their forklift.
Jeanne Ennen and I were among the members of our parish who helped pack food for the Feed My Starving Children org at the Maes cafeteria. Our shift packed about 130 boxes of food. It is a sobering reminder of how a little time and money can make a huge difference in people’s lives.

Gail, Jenna and Owen Gibson of Avon spent some time over the weekend, visiting family and friends in the area and attending the threshing bee.

Bonnie Fabian of Herman and some members of her family spent some time over the weekend visiting her mother Pearl A. Anderson and other family and friends in the area and participating in some of the threshing bee events.

One of the nice things about the bee is the opportunity to see and visit with some of the former Donnelly area residents who were home for the event such as David Aanerud, Arne Sather, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Gregerson.
