SIOUX CITY -- Gloria Mae Brouwer, 78, of Sioux City passed away Friday, March 5, 2010, at her home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Hagberg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Gloria was born May 25, 1931, at Donnelly, Minn., the daughter of Fred and Mabel (Peterson) Gerber. She grew up in Donnelly and graduated from Alberta High School. She continued her education in Sioux City at St. Joseph's Hospital and became a lab technician. She worked at St. Joseph's Hospital and later Marian Health Care.
Gloria married Jack Brouwer on Sept. 8, 1951. Other than a short time in Montana, they made their home in Sioux City. When Jack became ill, Gloria was his caregiver.
She was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and its Rachael's Circle, Bible study and was a Sunday school teacher. Gloria was also a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She loved entertaining her family and enjoyed reading, painting and working with her roses while gardening.
Survivors include three daughters, Vesta and Darrell Clausen, Teresa and Randy Worrell and Anita Gossett, all of Sioux City; a son, Thomas and Kris Brouwer of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; a great-grandson, Gabriel Clausen; and two brothers, Ronald Gerber and Dr. Robert Gerber.

Dona Agosti
Longtime Anchorage resident Dona Agosti, 85, died peacefully March 9, 2010, at the Anchorage Pioneer Home.
A rosary will be at noon Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 3900 Wisconsin St. in Anchorage. A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. A reception will follow at the Lunney Center.
Dona was born Jan. 11, 1925, in Donnelly, Minn. Following graduation from St. Mary's Catholic High School, she attended the University of Minnesota, majoring in journalism. She worked for Military Intelligence in Berlin during the post-World War II airlift crisis and wrote a column about her experiences for a Minnesota newspaper.
She met Lino, her husband of 55 years, in Colorado in 1954. Shortly after Alaska Statehood, they moved with their three daughters from Minneapolis to Anchorage, where the family grew by four sons. The Agostis resided in their Loussac Drive home in Turnagain since 1961.
Even while raising seven children, Dona was active in her church as a member of Holy Family Cathedral and then Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. In the '60s, Dona helped organize and direct Catholic Charities (now Catholic Social Services), as well as St. Francis House. She also helped found F.I.S.H., an ecumenical "people helping people" organization, and volunteered for 18 years. Dona was the program production chair for the 1981 visit of Pope John Paul II. In the '70s, she and Lino were initiated as Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
Dona served as an election board member for 23 years, was a member of the Anchorage Republican Women's Club, worked on senatorial and gubernatorial campaigns, and was a Republican State Convention delegate and National Organization for Women state delegate. At Turnagain, Romig and West, she supported her children's band, choir, sports and science fair activities, as well as Camp Fire Girl, Boy Scout and Little League activities.
Dona was named Alaska Mother of the Year in 1984.
Professionally, Dona helped her husband build their company, Refrigeration and Food Equipment Inc., and also served as its president. In 1992, she was named a YWCA Woman of Achievement.
Dona loved the Alaska outdoors. She was an avid backpacker and enjoyed cross-country skiing. She served as hiking chair for the Mountaineering Club of Alaska for 10 years and led extended wilderness hikes throughout Alaska. Dona covered more than 2,600 miles and wrote "The High Country Backpacker," a book designed to help new hikers prepare and avoid injury. "Wilma: An Alaska Tale of One Teacher, Two Teenagers and Three Wolverines," another book that Dona wrote 40 years ago, was published recently. Dona loved spending time at the remote log cabin the family built outside Talkeetna. Reminiscent of her childhood cabin in northern Minnesota, Agosti Lake became her private piece of wilderness and provided many bear stories and other tall tales. She inherited her mother's green thumb and kept lovely flower gardens.
Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 19 years ago, Dona led a full and rewarding life. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband, Lino; daughter Nancy and husband Fawzy Fawzy of Malibu, and their children Joanna and husband Ernesto Morales, of Culver City, and Monica, of Chicago; daughter Jan and husband Frank Woodruff, and their children, Amy, Zack and Fletcher, of Seattle; daughter Ann and husband Steve Hackett, of Homer; daughter Tam and husband Hans Gisler, and their children, Genevieve, Luke and Gabriella, of Anchorage; son, Jon and his children, Jamin, Claire, and Lawrence, of Anchorage; son Tim and wife Elaine, and their children, Adam, Alex and Andrew, of Kenai, Anthony of Nashville and Aaron in the U.S. Navy; son Tom and wife Julie Brown, and their children, Sam and Benji, of Seattle; son Dave and wife Denise, and their children, Tecla and Toby, of Anchorage; sister, Dorothy Wolking, of West Saint Paul; brother, Joe and wife Kay Wolking, of Tulsa; godchild Mike and wife Janeen McAllister, of West Saint Paul; and all of her extended family.

Elysia Buffington Moyle, 40, Bismarck, was called home to her Heavenly Father on February 23, 2010 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
A Funeral Service was held at 11 am on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be at a later date at First Lutheran Cemetery in Kensington, MN.
Visitation was held on Friday, February 26, 2010 at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.
Elysia was born February 1, 1970 in Morris, MN to William and Cherryl Madison. She was welcomed home by her beloved sister, Christi, who became her lifelong protector and supporter. Elysia was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Kensington, MN. The family moved to San Jose, CA and later to Bismarck, ND where Elysia graduated from Bismarck High School in 1988. She later graduated with degrees in Sociology and Social Work from the University of Minnesota, Morris and the University of Mary, Bismarck.
On July 3, 1993 she was married to Rob Moyle in Bismarck where they made their home. They were blessed with a daughter, Breanna, on March 2, 1995 and Elysia began her most fulfilling role as a mother to her precious “Bre”. A second union to Darren Buffington on February 14, 1999 blessed her again with a stepdaughter, Dana. Elysia enjoyed vacationing and spending time with family and friends, especially swimming and water skiing at the family cabin on Brush Lake.
Elysia began her career as a Licensed Social Worker for the Standing Rock Tribe. For the past several years she has been a Therapeutic Social Worker for PATH, Inc. in Bismarck. She was devoted to helping “her children” and formed lasting bonds with many. Elysia was especially proud to be “Auntie” to her special Christy Garreau. Elysia was so grateful for the love and lasting friendships of her coworkers and foster parents at PATH. Though a professional social worker, Elysia’s compassion, sensitivity and gentleness was also the manner in which she lived her life. A leader and mentor, she fully embraced life and all its adventures as well as expressing her artistic talents in playing the piano and painting. In her illness she demonstrated courage with a positive attitude and never saw herself as the victim. Elysia left a legacy of wonderful memories which we now celebrate and cherish.
Blessed to have shared her life is her daughter, Breanna; parents, Bill (Joy) Madison, Modesto, CA and Cherryl (Ritchie) Johnson, Hoffman, MN; sister, Christi (Henry) Blaskowski, Shakopee, MN; grandmother, Blanche Goodwin, Hoffman, MN; and each of her special friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who she loved and appreciated.

Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news. If you have news for me please remember my deadlines are Tue eve for my “mailboxes” and Wed eve for other means (e-mail, phone call, snail mail, etc)
After a fairly nice start for the month; this week has been cold and damp with light rain on and off and areas of fog esp. in the eve. The good news is the snow is starting to melt and there are some patches of bare ground around here.
STJ/KONG PARISH NEWS: Parish Bible study on Psalms 23 continues on Thursday’s at St J (10 am) and will be repeated at Kong at 7 PM
Parish Lenten services “The Sign of Jonah” with supper at 5:30 p.m. and services at 6:45 p. m. will continue through Easter. Supper and Services will alternate ea week between St J (Mar 17th) and Kong (Mar 24th). The offering this yr will be divided between the St Co Food shelf and ELCA disaster service Haitian earthquake recovery efforts. There will also be carts in the narthex to collect non perishable food items. Thanks to the Kong Men’s trio for providing special music at the services on Mar 10th
There will be an Easter Garden in both churches again this yr. There are sign up sheets in the narthex of both churches. Contact the parish office for more info.
The Mar parish newsletter is now out extra copies are available in the narthex of ea church.
The St J WELCA will be having their annual St pats party at the WWV on Mar 17th at 2 pm.
There will be a fundraising pancake breakfast for Niemackel Lake Park at the legion in Herman on Mar 21st.
I have a long list of achievements to report this week so congratulations to: Levin Strand who recently placed 1st in the Herman Cub Scout pack’s pinewood derby:
To: Cody Amundson, who as a member of the WCAHS FCCLA; recently earned a trip to the state with his presentation “down time –AHD”. His parents are Gary and Dianne Amundson of Barrett grandfather is Cliff Bjorlin of Donnelly.
To: Paige and Landon Strand who as members of H-N HS speech team earned 1st and 3rd place ribbons at the Morris speech meet.
To: Aryn Parker (Jake and Mindy Eystad); who recently earned Honorable mention in the Youth Flag art design competition.
To: Sarah Burke for making the Dean’s list at the College of St Benedict.
To Jake Long; who finished second in his class at the state wrestling championships held in St Paul on Mar 6th. He finishes his career with over 200 wins.
The following MAHS students are to be congratulated for winning ribbons at the science fair; Zach Geise;Mazenicke Smith; Jana Loher; Jesse Vera and Tom Holland (ninth grade) John Huebner & Kourtney Giese (seventh grade).
Congratulations also The Morris FFA Ag Salesmanship team which finished 2nd in regional competition and advanced to state competition. Tom Holland is a member of that team he finished 5th individually. The Morris FFA JR Officer team also recently placed first in the Regional Novice Parliamentary Procedure CDE. Members of the team include Sami Searle; Kendra Speer; and Katlin Van Horn.
Ed Lund of Alex passed away recently, survivors include his sister Corrine (Harry) Kruize of Donnelly.
Dona (Wolking) Agosti, age 85, formerly of Donnelly passed away peacefully on March 9, 2010 at the Anchorage Pioneer Home of Parkinson’s disease. Her family ran the Wolking station at what is now the site of the Donnelly co-op.

Mason Sakari Torma was born on March 6, 2010 at Stevens Community Medical Center, Morris, to Andrea Bergstrom and Joha Torma of Morris. Grandparents are Becky Bergstrom of Donnelly and the late Charles Bergstrom and Sharon Torma of Hancock and the late Simo Torma. Great grandparents are Burton and Irene Strand of Donnelly and Lennie Torma of Wahpeton, N.D.
Austin Reid Werner was born February 24, 2010, to Brian and Kristi Werner of Lamberton. Austin Reid weighed 7 lbs. and was 19” long. Grandparents are Tom and Kelly Claassen of Chokio, Dan and Jeanne Koehntop of Donnelly and Al and Janice Werner of Sanborn. Great grandmother is Lois Koehntop of Donnelly
Jim and Lou Eystad and I traveled to Hancock on Mar 6th for the WCAWA chapter meeting at the E Free Church in Hancock. Afterwards an informal meeting was held by local Lutherans to discuss the possibility of providing a monthly worship services for Lutherans in the Hancock building. The first service will be held on Apr 11 at the E- Free Church in Hancock. The next WA meeting will be on Apr 10th (note change of day due to the Easter Holiday) at Fron in Starbuck
ON Mar 4th I stopped at the Christus House in Morris to visit with the LCM pastor “PK” for a few min. I picked up some literature that explains a little bit about campus ministry and placed it in the literature racks of St J and Kong. If you would like a visit from the LCM team to explain more about that ministry give her a call at the Christus House. Jim and Lou Eystad attended international night there on Mar 28th. They also recently traveled to Springfield for the baby shower for Isaac Johnson. They were overnight guests of the Johnson family and attended church with them before returning home.
The St Co Gen Soc met on Mar 4th and the Don Community club on Mar 8th. Due to other commitments I could not make either meeting.
On Mar 9th I stopped into the Old # 1 in Morris for the Habit for Humanity fund raiser.
The Kopacek family and I attended the LU mtg at Morris Library on Mar 10th.
Pearl A Anderson visited Pearl (Albert) Anderson on Mar 5th.
Julie and Mike Olgardad, Lisa and Mariak spent the weekend at the Allen and Joyce Olson home in Donnelly. Other visitors were Tami and Damian McAllister; Alyssa and Braiden of Fargo; Tim and Shannon Olson Emily and Connor of Albany & Scott and Stephanie Olson ,Bryon & Jainen of Morris. They all helped Brainden celebrate his 5th birthday.
Thanks to Bob Burner the co-op manager in Donnelly for this info. The Donnelly co-op experienced a good year in 2009. It was not the record setting year that 2008 was but it mirrored the trend set by most companies. The audit was presented by Carol Boehland representing Hennen and Assoc of St Paul. Sales were projected be down $1.5 million due to reduced volume of fertilizer and petroleum products. Sales were actually down only $675,000. The co-op showed positive earnings of $204,000 compared to $436,000 in 2008. The guest speaker was Milt Lund from co-bank the bank that the Donnelly co-op bowered funds from. After a fairly nice start for the month; this week has been cold and damp with light rain on and off and areas of fog esp. in the eve. The good news is the snow is starting to melt and there are some patches of bare ground around here.
STJ/KONG PARISH NEWS: Parish Bible study on Psalms 23 continues on Thursday’s at St J (10 am) and will be repeated at Kong at 7 PM
Parish Lenten services “The Sign of Jonah” with supper at 5:30 p.m. and services at 6:45 p. m. will continue through Easter. Supper and Services will alternate ea week between St J (Mar 17th) and Kong (Mar 24th). The offering this yr will be divided between the St Co Food shelf and ELCA disaster service Haitian earthquake recovery efforts. There will also be carts in the narthex to collect non perishable food items. Thanks to the Kong Men’s trio for providing special music at the services on Mar 10th
There will be an Easter Garden in both churches again this yr. There are sign up sheets in the narthex of both churches. Contact the parish office for more info.
The Mar parish newsletter is now out extra copies are available in the narthex of ea church.
The St J WELCA will be having their annual St pats party at the WWV on Mar 17th at 2 pm.
There will be a fundraising pancake breakfast for Niemackel Lake Park at the legion in Herman on Mar 21st.
I have a long list of achievements to report this week so congratulations to: Levin Strand who recently placed 1st in the Herman Cub Scout pack’s pinewood derby:
To: Cody Amundson, who as a member of the WCAHS FCCLA; recently earned a trip to the state with his presentation “down time –AHD”. His parents are Gary and Dianne Amundson of Barrett grandfather is Cliff Bjorlin of Donnelly.
To: Paige and Landon Strand who as members of H-N HS speech team earned 1st and 3rd place ribbons at the Morris speech meet.
To: Aryn Parker (Jake and Mindy Eystad); who recently earned Honorable mention in the Youth Flag art design competition.
To: Sarah Burke for making the Dean’s list at the College of St Benedict.
To Jake Long; who finished second in his class at the state wrestling championships held in St Paul on Mar 6th. He finishes his career with over 200 wins.
The following MAHS students are to be congratulated for winning ribbons at the science fair; Zach Geise;Mazenicke Smith; Jana Loher; Jesse Vera and Tom Holland (ninth grade) John Huebner & Kourtney Giese (seventh grade).
Congratulations also The Morris FFA Ag Salesmanship team which finished 2nd in regional competition and advanced to state competition. Tom Holland is a member of that team he finished 5th individually. The Morris FFA JR Officer team also recently placed first in the Regional Novice Parliamentary Procedure CDE. Members of the team include Sami Searle; Kendra Speer; and Katlin Van Horn.
Ed Lund of Alex passed away recently, survivors include his sister Corrine (Harry) Kruize of Donnelly.
Dona (Wolking) Agosti, age 85, formerly of Donnelly passed away peacefully on March 9, 2010 at the Anchorage Pioneer Home of Parkinson’s disease. Her family ran the Wolking station at what is now the site of the Donnelly co-op.
Gloria Mae (Gerber) Brouwer, age 78, of Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Donnelly passed away Friday, March 5, 2010 at her home.
Mason Sakari Torma was born on March 6, 2010 at Stevens Community Medical Center, Morris, to Andrea Bergstrom and Joha Torma of Morris. Grandparents are Becky Bergstrom of Donnelly and the late Charles Bergstrom and Sharon Torma of Hancock and the late Simo Torma. Great grandparents are Burton and Irene Strand of Donnelly and Lennie Torma of Wahpeton, N.D.
Austin Reid Werner was born February 24, 2010, to Brian and Kristi Werner of Lamberton. Austin Reid weighed 7 lbs. and was 19” long. Grandparents are Tom and Kelly Claassen of Chokio, Dan and Jeanne Koehntop of Donnelly and Al and Janice Werner of Sanborn. Great grandmother is Lois Koehntop of Donnelly
Jim and Lou Eystad and I traveled to Hancock on Mar 6th for the WCAWA chapter meeting at the E Free Church in Hancock. Afterwards an informal meeting was held by local Lutherans to discuss the possibility of providing a monthly worship services for Lutherans in the Hancock building. The first service will be held on Apr 11 at the E- Free Church in Hancock. The next WA meeting will be on Apr 10th (note change of day due to the Easter Holiday) at Fron in Starbuck
ON Mar 4th I stopped at the Christus House in Morris to visit with the LCM pastor “PK” for a few min. I picked up some literature that explains a little bit about campus ministry and placed it in the literature racks of St J and Kong. If you would like a visit from the LCM team to explain more about that ministry give her a call at the Christus House. Jim and Lou Eystad attended international night there on Mar 28th. They also recently traveled to Springfield for the baby shower for Isaac Johnson. They were overnight guests of the Johnson family and attended church with them before returning home.
The St Co Gen Soc met on Mar 4th and the Don Community club on Mar 8th. Due to other commitments I could not make either meeting.
On Mar 9th I stopped into the Old # 1 in Morris for the Habit for Humanity fund raiser.
The Kopacek family and I attended the LU mtg at Morris Library on Mar 10th.
Pearl A Anderson visited Pearl (Albert) Anderson on Mar 5th.
Julie and Mike Olgardad, Lisa and Mariak spent the weekend at the Allen and Joyce Olson home in Donnelly. Other visitors were Tami and Damian McAllister; Alyssa and Braiden of Fargo; Tim and Shannon Olson Emily and Connor of Albany & Scott and Stephanie Olson ,Bryon & Jainen of Morris. They all helped Brainden celebrate his 5th birthday.
Thanks to Bob Burner the co-op manager in Donnelly for this info. The Donnelly co-op experienced a good year in 2009. It was not the record setting year that 2008 was but it mirrored the trend set by most companies. The audit was presented by Carol Boehland representing Hennen and Assoc of St Paul. Sales were projected be down $1.5 million due to reduced volume of fertilizer and petroleum products. Sales were actually down only $675,000. The co-op showed positive earnings of $204,000 compared to $436,000 in 2008. The guest speaker was Milt Lund from co-bank the bank that the Donnelly co-op bowered funds from. Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news.
The last week has been a bit of relief from winter with fairly mild temps and some melting going on. Mar has come in like a lamb hopefully it does not go out like a lion.

WCAWA will meet today (Sat) at the E-Free church in Hancock beginning with coffee fellowship at 9:30 am, meeting at 10 am. For more info call 795-2477
West Central Christian Homes will have it annual meeting on Mar 7th at Faith Lutheran church in Morris at 1 pm
The St Co DFL county convention will be held today (Sat) at 9 am at the legion in Morris.
Township annual meetings and elections will be held on Mar 12th in the area. Donnelly twp will meet at fire hall in Donnelly; Pepperton at the community hall in Alberta; most other townships in the area will meet in their town halls. Most annual meetings are at 4 pm with elections from 5-8 pm. Contact your county auditor for specific meeting times and places in your area.
Anna Anderson of Barrett formerly of Donnelly passed away on Feb 21st. Her funeral was held on Feb 26th in Barrett.
Bob Frank of Starbuck formerly of Donnelly passed away on Feb 25th his funeral was held on Mar 2nd at Fron. A sister Dorothy (Sam) Jordheim, sister in law Shirley Frank of Donnelly and their families are among his survivors. His family ran the Gambles store in Donnelly for many years. He was a good friend and I will miss him. I traveled to Starbuck on Mar 1st for his visitation. Afterwards I stopped at the Minnewaka home for a quick visit of some of the residents.
Wednesday, March 10: Multicultural Students in Morris, Part I. Students from China attending UMM will share their experiences and perceptions of UMM, Morris, and the U.S., and talk about their homeland. Part II, consisting of UMM students from various other countries, is scheduled for October. Morris Public Library Community Room, 1:00 p.m. Sponsored by Learning Unlimited.
Congratulations to Kody Armstrong (Jason and Niki) for being named to the honor roll at WCAHS and also to Samantha Larson to the honor roll at H-NHS
Congratulations to Paige Strand who earned her blue jacket from the H-N FFA recently. She and Landon Strand have also won several ribbons lately as members of the speech team in meets at Hancock and Wheaton.
Congratulations to Brandi Speer who has been named vice president of the Agribusiness/Agronomy Club at Southwest Minnesota State University.
Congratulations to Jake Long who recently qualified for a return trip to the state wrestling tournament this week by winning his class at the section wrestling tournament.
Congratulations to the MA-CA boys BB team that won the WCC south conf championship. Tyler Rouske is a member of that team.
The St Co Gen Soc & the Donnelly Community Club were among the many Stevens County non-profits at the expo at the armory in Morris on Feb 25th. Jim and Lou Eystad were among a goodly crowd that attended it. Clarice Dieter won the door prize from the gen soc.
Steve Fults and I along with many others attended the Donnelly co-op mtg. at the Donnelly Hall on Feb 26th.Thanks to the St J WELCA for preparing and serving the wonderful dinner. Later it was off to Morris where many attended the visitation for David Haynes at the funeral home.
Feb 27th Jim and Lou Eystad and I were among the family and friends who attended the funeral for David Haynes at Kong. We were also attended the Glacial Ridge conference convention at Our Saviors in Chokio on the 28th.
About 30 people attended the annual meeting of the Donnelly Community club Inc on Mar 1st at Sax’s café. We had a very successful bee last yr; plans are under way for this year’s bee on Aug 28 and 29th. We will be featuring the Allis Chalmers line of machinery and tractors this year. If you were unable to attend the meeting you can still join the club by mailing your dues to the don community Club. We are also always looking for ideas and/or suggestions for the bee and/or other events. The monthly meetings are on the 2nd Mon. of ea month (excluding winter months) at 7 pm at the hall. Thanks to the crew at Sax’s café for preparing and serving the delicious meal.

Bob Frank of Starbuck passed away on Feb 25th. His funeral is scheduled for Mar 2nd at 2 pm at Fron in Starbuck. He was a good friend and I will miss him a lot. His folks and brother don ran the Gamble store in Donnelly for many years. His sister Dorothy (Sam) Jorhdheim and sister in law Shirley are among the family members that survive him.
