Weather news: we had some rain over the weekend; which helped to freshen things up, around here some, and although there was some hail in the area on Sat. The weather has been very nice this week. A former neighbor tells me they have been able to get most of their corn planted. S J/Kong parish news: There will be joint worship at Kong on Apr 29th at 11 a.m. , with a dinner afterwards as a fundraiser for a Kong youth who is part of the new wine group from first Lutheran that will be traveling to Chicago in June, free will offering GSLC news: five young people will be confirmed at the church on Apr 29th at 9 a.m. two are from the Kensington Lcmc. Rev Norm Olsen from Reclaim and Erin Koehntop from someplace safe will be leading adult forums in May. The Glacial Ridge Conference WELCA spring gathering will be held at Glenwood Lutheran church in Glenwood on Apr 30th registration is at 4:30 with a light meal served at 5 pm. the speaker will be Pastor Julie Grothe a native of Benson on her work the homeless through guild Inc. in Minneapolis. West Fargo, North Dakota 58078. No phone yet Rebekah Aanerud, Becca Holland, Kristi Geise and McKenzie Smith are members of the MA-C-A girls track team that has had a successful spring so far. They won their own meet, finished 2nd at Minnewaska, third at their 2nd innovational, and third at Benson. Time and space do not permit me to list all their individual accomplishments here but I will on my blog. Kourtney and Becca have finished in the top 5 in most of their races individually and as part of several relay teams. MaKenzie has finished first, or second in all her races, and Rebekah has finished in the top 6 in most of her hurdles and top 5 in the pole vault The Morris FFA had their awards night recently, congratulations to Jake Moser who earned a state degree and the state chapter farmer award ,his sister Jonna received the outstanding member award, Rebekah Aanerud received the outstanding sophomore award ,Kaitlin Van Horn ,Brody Bahr, Jesse Disselkamp and Jake Moser received ag proficiency award; Kaitlin also received star chapter agribusiness award Penny Melberg and Nancy Henrichs were members of the Willie’s sv that was the 2011-12 hi lo bowling league season champions Congratulations to Tara Flaten who recently made the honor roll at Hancock h.s Congratulations to Brooke geilspe who was one of c-a h.s musicians to receive a superior/ excellent award at the dist. music contest Congratulations to gabbi Nienhaus who was recently named a star green hand of Hancock FFA Lauren Saneness of Cyrus gave a presentation on the Gideon’s during the unwinders’ service at the Christus house on Apr 12th. Rev and Mrs. Cox of Morris provided the entertainment at the wwv Apr birthday party on Apr 13th. Afterwards I visited some of the residents there D ick Goldenstein and I were among the good crowd at the Angie Staples benefit at first Lutheran on Apr 14th. Later Jim and Lou Eystad were among the many workers at the ST J spring fling. Afterwards I visited Denny Anderson at his home in Donnelly. On Apr. 19nd I attended the final unwinders service of the year at the Christus house, later a good crowd was on hand at the science auditorium at umm for a presentation on what happened to paratroopers During D-day by Colonel Osterberg. Apr 20th I took in the ABC sale at Zion, visited my aunt Pearl, attended the concert by Penny and Pals at MAES Music auditorium and visited Wally McCollar enroute home. Apr 22nd I spent some time in Hoffman at the fun expo ,visited some friends at the Hoffman home, and another friend at the Bethany home, stopped at the Viking Plaza to see the Pioneer Power clubs annual spring show, then went to see the movie “October Baby” at Cinema 9 in Alex. In the eve Rebekah, Savannah and Micah Aanerud were members of cast of “Pollyanna” that was presented at Central Square in Glenwood. Apr 22nd Mike and Lisa Melchert were among the many archers who partook in the Mitch Keiendel memorial archery shoot at Niemakel Lake Park. In the eve a good crowd was on hand for “A Little Night of Music” at First Lutheran Jim and Lou Eystad attended the salad luncheon at the Eden reformed church in Herman on Apr 22nd Apr 21st the Kopacek’s attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Ron and Betty Aanerud at Waubun. Ron’s parents were the late Victor and Millie (Miller) Aanerud formerly of Donnelly As many of you have seen and/or heard my farm place is no more it was demolished by the new owners last week

Survivors include his wife Karen who was manager of the UFMSB insurance agency for a number of years. David Carlson of Florence TX passed away on Apr 2 survivors include his brother Ron (Sharon) Carlson and their family of Donnelly Charles Harstad of Big Fork, Minnesota, passed away on April 5. He always enjoyed coming down to Donnelly for family events and also the Threshing Bee. Jeanne Ennen, Ray Kill, George and Elaine Harstad attended the funeral on Monday, April 9. He was George’s cousin. Oden Baken of Bloomington passed away on Apr 14th survivors include his wife Joan (Goldenstein) and family. Her parents were the late Albert and Pearl Goldenstein. I have posted the obits of David, Charles and Oden on my blog Jaynie Joyce Lesmeister was born on March 23 to Casey and Danielle Lesmeister of Donnelly. Grandparents are Tom and Roxanne Lesmeister of Morris and Mark and Hazel Miller of Browns Valley. Great-grandparents are Eugene and Katie Lesmeister of Morris, and Della Dunn of Donnelly. Congratulations to MaKenzie Smith who was recently recognized as a back to back winner of the wcc-s performer of the week, she was also received honorable mention on the wcc all-conference team and was one of those named to the sec 6 -AA all-tournament team. At the winter sports award she was named defensive MVP; Beth Holland was given the hustle award. At the recent 4-h share the fun the stampede club which includes several Donnelly area members won the Lawrence Welk award for their musical skit. Congratulations to Ed and Lou Kopel who celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Apr. 10th the 4-h project bowl was held recently the sr. team won 4th place Rebekah Aanerud is a member of that team, the Jr. trotter tam placed 5th members include Savannah Aanerud :Shannon Kill and coach Heather Aanerud, both teams will be advancing to state competition. The Jr. Pacers team placed 13th, Castelli Kill and Micah Aanerud are members of that team and coach Julie Kill. During Maundy Thursday services at ST J on Apr. 5th Brady Cardwell and Logan Mau received their first communion their parents are Doug and Muriel Cardwell and Maynard and Lori Mau, their grandmother is Edna Mau. Logan’s maternal grandparents are Lyle and Marilyn Miller Congratulations to Brady Bahr who was named defensive MVP of the Morris/ C-A boys’ basketball team, Chandler Erickson was named honorable mention on the all wcc team. Congratulations to the following science fair winners in grade 6: Amber Uphoff (tie 1st) and Sydney Sperr (tie 4th) Congratulations to Keaton Long who as a member of the wca little knights wrestling team received a 4th place finish at the nwya in little falls recently Our prayers are with Rob Kopel who was injured in a farm accident on Apr 11th. His mother is Evelyn Kopel Gayle ,Jenna, and Owen Gibson of Avon and Laurie Hoffer of St Cloud spent some time last weekend attending the ST J spring fling and visiting family and friends in the area.

Bakken, Odean Age 80, of Bloomington, passed away April 14, 2012. Preceded in death by daughter, Deanna. Survived by wife, Joan; daughter, Lori (Greg Mertes); and cherished grandchildren, Maja and Nathan. Born in Roseau, MN, Dean was a proud Norwegian-American. He was a mechanic at Northwest Airlines for over 30 years. Dean was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying walleye fishing on Lake of the Woods and deer hunting. He will be missed by his family and many friends. Services Saturday, April 21 at 11 AM at Atonement Lutheran Church in Bloomington. harstad obit

Charles O. Harstad, 84, of Bigfork, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 5, 2012, in Bigfork. He was born on Sept. 11, 1927 in Jessie Lake Township. In 1947, he graduated from Deer River High School, where he had been a "dorm kid". After serving 2 years in the U.S. Army, he was united in marriage to Virginia Gillman on Oct. 18, 1952 in St. Paul, where they made their home. He retired in 1980 from the Ford Motor Company and moved to Bigfork. He is preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Mabel Harstad, and brother Harlan. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia; daughters, Barbara Motz (Donald) of lnver Grove Heights, Ann Russell (Neil) of St. Paul, and Mary of St. Paul; son, James (Tina) of Richfield; brother, Edson; sister, Ardell Olson; grandchildren Christina and Josiah (Jenna). Memorials preferred to Bigfork Over 50 Club P.O. Box 43, Bigfork, MN 56628 Visitation: One hour prior to the service. Service: Monday April 9, 2012, 2 p.m., Grace Community Church, Bigfork Minn. Next edition Apr 7th 13th Welcome to another addition of the Donnelly news; please note that I will be checking my boxes in Donnelly on Mon eve (Apr 9th) next week before the community club meeting after that I plan on driving up on Wed to check them. Weather news: temps continue to remain mild; a few rain showers have helped to green things up around here. One of the disadvantages to living in Morris is that I do not get out into the countryside much to see what farmers are doing S J/Kong parish news: Easter Sun services will be at 8:30 am at Kong 11 am at St J, no ss The St J spring fling will be held on Apr 14th, beginning at 10:30 am. There will be a rummage and bake sale, raffle for quilt and other items and lunch for more info call 246-3278 The parish newsletter for Apr is now out; extra copies are available in the narthex of each church. GSLC news Easter Sun services will be at 9 am, followed by a time of fellowship with muffins and fruit cups, no ss or adult forum The Apr. mission of the month is New Life Lutheran church Duluth and the coffee money will go to someplace safe in Morris The Dfd will meet at the fire hall on Apr 9th; the community club will meet at the town hall, both at 7 pm. Congratulations to Carrie and Kellie wilts who earned inventor blue and red ribbons at the H_N elementary science fair Congratulations to Levin Strand who recently earned three more Boy Scout badges and also the world conservation award. I think he is going to need a new sash soon to display all the badges and awards he has won Congratulations to Alisha Roske and Cody Livinggood who married in Morris on Mar 24th Congratulations to the Morris –CA gymnastic team that received a gold rating for their GPA. Kourtney Geise and Savannah Aanerud are members of that team. Kourtney was named MVG and a performer of the week by the west central conference Congratulations to the Morris bpa that named MN chapter of the year, Syd Beyer and Carly Gullickson are members of that org; Syd was one of the keynote speakers at the event; she also won a trip to the nationals, as did Carly. Congratulations to the following that placed at the whetstone track meet in Milbank recently: Beth Holland 4th 200 meter dash, Kourtney Geise 1st 400 meter dash, MacKenzie smith second 3200 hundred, Rebekah Aanerud 2nd 300 meter hurdles. Becca Holland was a member of the 4x100 relay team that finished first, Kourtney Geise was a member of the 4x 400 team that places third and the 4 x 800 team that placed second A belated happy 92nd birthday wish to Bill Underwood Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended supper and services at gs on mar 28th earlier in the day I attended Lenten services at 1st Lutheran in the aft I stopped at gs and visited with Pr. Mike for a while Andy Brevig and I attended bible study at St J on Mar 29th in the eve I attended the seminar at wulf farms. A large crowd attended the metal to money sale near Hoffman on Mar 30th. In the aft buyers from all over the USA attended the wulf cattle sale; the highest selling bull went for $42,500. Steve Fults and I were among the large number of delegates, alternates and others, who attended the CD 7 Republican convention on Mar 31st at the Broadway ballroom in Alex. Lee Bybeck won the endorsement to face Collin Peterson again. Afterwards I visited a friend in the Bethany home. Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended services at gs on Apr. 1st and the anniversary dinner afterwards Jeanne ennen and I attended the annual meeting of the pome de tree river assoc at the old #1 on Apr. 2nd later I attended the evangelism cmte mtg at gslc Apr 4th I attended Geo Kramer’s yard sale, stopped at the sr center to visit some with Jim and Lou Eystad who were helping out the naps program, visited some friends at the wwv and Geshein Kill in her apt at the Heritage apartments in Morris .

Next edition Apr 14th- 20th” Welcome to another addition of the Donnelly news; As I begin my fourth year of writing this column I want to say “Mange Takk” to everyone who has taken the time during the past few years; to tell me how much they enjoy this column. There is a saying “time flies when you are having fun” and that certainly has been true over the past few years while I have been writing this column. Weather news: some cool temps and strong winds have made it feel more spring like in the recent weeks. I have not personally seen much field work going on but in talking to some people I understand a lot of wheat planting is going on and some is already up. He was preceded in death by his parents Edisteen (a former Donnelly area resident) and Vivian (Stark) strand Joyce Kill of Morris passed away on Apr. 7th; survivors include her step son Howard (Deb) Kill of Donnelly and their family. Maurice Dale Simpson of Fergus falls passed away on Apr 4th survivors include his brother Lowell (Barb) Simpson and their family Les Vipond of Herman passed away on Apr 5th survivors include a nephew Doug Gulbrandson and his family Noah Nohl of Hancock passed away on Apr 7th survivors include his daughter in law Tracy (Loge) (Ray) Nohl and family Jace Robert Asmus was born on March 6, 2012 at Lake Region Healthcare, Fergus Falls, to Jarrod and Heidi Asmus. Grandparents are Rob and Kathy Kopel of Donnelly and Robert and Jan Asmus of Morris. Andon Thomas Ekren was born on March 27, 2012 at Lake Region Healthcare, Fergus Falls, to Anthony and Amy Ekren on Morris. Grandparents are Gary and Sandy Fehr, Vance and Kim Gullickson, and Mark and Mick Ekren all of Morris, great grandmother is Ardis Gullickson. The Stevens County Genealogical society had their monthly meeting at the library on Apr 5th the next one is May 3rd. in the eve a good crowd was on hand for Maundy Thursday supper and services at St j. After services the fellowship committee had a meeting, It was decided that we would have a block party again this year tentatively scheduled for July 28th however instead of chicken we would be serving hot dogs and brats. Andy Brevig and I attended the pancake supper served by the youth on Apr 27th at Kong, later Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended good Fri services at gs in the eve. Earlier in the day I stopped to visit Jack Fuchs at his home in Morris. He informs that Ron Carlson’s brother in TX passed away. Jim and Lou Eystad attended the Easter breakfast at the Eden reformed church in Herman on Apr 8th later they and I attended Easter services at good shepherd. Apr. 9th the Kopacek family and I attended the Agralite dist. meeting in Alberta, in the eve the Donnelly community club had their first meeting of the year as we began the process of planning for this year’s threshing bee Aug. 25 and 26th . Remember the feature this year is Oliver so if you have any Oliver tractors or machinery be sure to bring them to the show. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for events feel free to bring them to one of the meetings, the next one will be on May 14th. It was announced that due to a conflict the June meeting will be held on June 18th. It was also announced the pictures of the former royalty taken from the depot still have not been found. Belton--- Funeral services for David Wayne Carlson, age 68, of Florence, will be held 10:00 AM, Wednesday April 4, 2012 at Dossman Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dana Wilhelmsen officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6 PM to 8PM at Dossman Funeral Home in Belton. David died Sunday, April 1, 2012 at his home in Florence. He was born March 19, 1944 in Graceville, Minnesota the son of the late Roy and Margaret (Ewert) Carlson. David honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967. He has lived in the central Texas area for 34 years and was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Belton. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post #4008 in Belton. He is preceded in death by his loving parents and one sister, Cari Stattelman. Survivors include two sons, Tracy and Tim Carlson; one daughter, Nina Carlson; three brothers, Ronnie, Robert and Jerry Carlson; three sisters, Jennie Bengston, Marilyn Homrighausen, Denese Carlson; four grandchildren, Daniela, Roy, Valeria and Cody Carlson; and his life long friend and companion, Barb Christenson.
