quaal obit

Alma Quaal Memorial services for Alma E. Quaal of Wadena, will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, February 13, 2012 at the Johnson Memorial Home in Wadena with Pastor Stephen Meltzer presiding. Alma passed away at the age of 89 years on Monday, February 6, 2012 at the Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena. Alma Elvira Quaal was born on August 2, 1922 to Siebelt W. and Ella K. (Rankin) Goldenstein at Pipestone, MN. She was united in marriage with Reuben Alfred Quaal on June 22, 1957 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. She worked for over 30 years as a bookkeeper at the Donnelly Creamery in Donnelly, MN. She also worked for a number of years at the Wayzata Bank before working at Erickson’s Super Valu in Wayzata, MN. She retired and moved to Verndale in 1985 then later moved to her home in Wadena. She enjoyed cooking, especially cookies, jams and preserves for family and friends. She also enjoyed collecting cookbooks, embroidery, and tending her flowers and vegetable gardens from which she became known as the “Tomato Lady”. Alma was preceded in death by her husband Reuben in 1980; parents Siebelt and Ella Goldenstein; son Quentin; daughters Grace Sackman and Candace Ertl; five brothers, five sisters and 2 infant siblings; and granddaughters Heather Sackman and Brianna Sackman. She is survived by her sons John (Connie) of Underwood and Myron (Linda) of Verndale; sons-in-law Bill Sackman of Alta Loma, CA and Richard “Dick” (Ruth) Ertl of Mayer, MN; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Alma’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery at Long Lake, MN

However temps continue to remain mild and there is still no forecast of any major storms on the horizon, Thanks to the Good Samaritan who blew out the sidewalk on our block several times again this week. This year’s guest is Doug Ohman and his program is “Libraries of MN”. As most of you know he has presented several programs at the threshing bee in past years and last year I had an opportunity to hear this program on Libraries in elbow lake year and it was very good. Congratulations to Nancy Woodke whose picture of Dillion Johnson in the barrel race at the Stevens county fair recently won a prize from the MN newspaper association Congratulations to Chandler Erickson who was one of the members of the C-A bpa team that earned a trip to the state. Alyssa uphoff is one the artists whose work is being showcased at the common cup. Jan 26th Kathy Bahr and I attended the twins’ caravan stop at the pizza ranch in Morris. Jan 27th I visited Irene Strand in her apartment at the heritage apartments in Morris. She said that earlier in the week she attended a birthday party for Lyla Cin at the Glenwood home and she was very good that day. Jan 28th I visited my aunt Pearl Anderson at her apartment in the sunrise apartments in Morris to wish her a belated happy birthday ,her birthday was the 27th. She said several members of her family had been home to help her celebrate the previous day. Later I visited Gary Weirs in his apt the green river apartments and enroute home I stopped at McCollar Jewelry for one of my frequent visits with him. In the eve I attended the contemporary worship service sponsored by the Morris community church at the MAHS auditorium. Jan 29th Andy Brevig and I attended youth service sun at St J; Joan Kopacek reports that there was a good crowd on hand afterward for the ST J annual meeting and dinner. Andy and I also attended the Stevens county Republican Party central committee meeting on Jan 30th at Detoy’s in Morris. Plans were finalized for the precinct caucuses to be held on Feb 7th.It was announced that the county convention will be held in early Mar, the 7th district convention will be held in Alex in late Mar and the state convention in St Cloud in early May Last week Jim and Lou Eystad traveled to Wheaton with Doug and Ellen Wilts and girls to a bb game where w-h-n played c-g- b, Kellie Wilts was one of the players on the team Feb 1st they helped Vince Dalager celebrate his 95th birthday at the senior center. I recently learned of the death of Jonathan McHone of Crystal Lake Ill. He was the co-pilot of a d53 helicopter that crashed in Afghanistan killing all on board. Among the family members that survive him are his parents Ron and Sylvia (Smith) McHone and an Aunt, Lola Smith of Donnelly. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Grant and Helen Smith. . Congratulations to Shadow Olson of Donnelly who was named to the dean’s list at msu-Moorhead Congratulations to the following who won blue ribbons at the science fair 9th grade: Kourtney Geise, Riley Biesterfield, 7th: Morgan Biesterfield Congratulations to the newest members of the national honor society at mahs: Jim Burke; Tom Holland; and McKenzie Smith Alisha Rose and Kody Livengood of Cyrus are happy to announce their engagement. Alisha is the daughter of John and Holly Riley of Morris, and Russell Roske of Donnelly. A Mar 24th wedding is planned in Morris Jan 19th the Kopacek family and I were among those of us who attended the retirement party for Bill and Lena Telkamp in their office in Morris. They plan to travel down south for a while Eugene Anderson was the “cook” at heartland motors for their indoor sale that I attended on Jan 20th. He told me his family used to live on the Barret ranch in the Donnelly area and he recently bought a house in town and he and his wife are in the process of moving in to it. Sat I went back and traded cars.

Thankfully the forecast calls for moderating temps this weekend and there are no major storms on the horizon. Mike Melchert was one of the many fishermen who tried their luck at the Donnelly rod and gun club’s ice fishing tournament on cotton wood lake on Jan 14th. There were 4 fish caught, Jeff Stallman won for the biggest fish. In the eve I visited my aunt Pearl A. Anderson at her apt in Morris MaKenzie Smith was one of the “cooks” at the habit for humanity breakfast on Jan 15th at the Legion in Morris that Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended Jim and Lou Eystad were supper guests of Neil and Ruth theilke on Jan 13th. The descendants of Henry and Emilie Smith gathered for the Smith Christmas at the home of Carl and Brenda Smith of rural Morris on January 14th. 74 people came together for good food, drink and lots of laughter. The states represented were Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Kansas, New Mexico and Florida. David Flugel and I were among those who attended the community supper at the senior center in Morris on Jan 16th. He informs me that plans are under way for another small town’s symposium this summer In a case of “many hands make light work” a good group of men got together on Jan 17th to finish tearing the plaster out of the ceiling in the basement at gslc. Additional work nights will be announced as needed. Earlier in the day I was among those who helped take down the Christmas decorations at the church. Joan and Jerry Kopacek had a slippery trip to Madison the 14th for the VFW 5th District meeting. Coming home the snowy roads were slush. This is paraprofessional week so we recognize the Donnelly area ones Sue Erdahl-Nelson, Kris Kloos, Lori Speer, and Sharon Van Horn

Next edition Jan 14th-20th Welcome to another addition of the Donnelly news Weather news there is a saying in MN. if you do not like the weather wait 5 min and it will change. That has been true the past couple of weeks. We have gone from snow and cold temps a couple weeks ago ,to enjoying sunshine and record high temps during the past week. Kopecks report sitting on their deck in t-shirts and bare feet on Tue. Wed it was back to reality with snow and cold temps. St J/Kong parish news: there will not be communion services on Jan 15th as previously announced they will be on Jan 22nd. On the 15th there will also be a welcome coffee hour for Irene Goldstein before services and Tom and Pearl Horning will be providing music at ST J on the 15th. GSLC News: there will be adult forums following coffee hour every sun. New member sun is Jan 15th. There will be a 2nd work night in the church basement on Jan 17th at 7 pm. bring hammers, pry bars and dust masks. A third night is tentatively scheduled for the 24th at 7 pm. Due to a mold problem the plaster in the ceiling has to be torn out. Rev Paul Erdal will be installed as the new pastor of first Lutheran on Jan 15th at the 8:15 and 10: 45 am services followed by a pot luck dinner after the second service. He is the former pastor of our Savior’s Lutheran church in Chokio. The movie a “shot in the dark” will be shown at first Lutheran on Jan 20th at 7 pm free will offering Habit for humanity will hold their annual pancake breakfast fundraiser on Jan 15th from 8:30 am -1 pm at the legion in Morris. Free will offering I have learned that Fr. Bob Kieffer who was recently appointed to be the new priest at Assumption Catholic church is a nephew of a former Donnelly area resident Emma (Larson) Kieffer. The Donnelly rod and gun club is sponsoring an ice fishing derby today (sat) on cottonwood lake (north of Donnelly on 530th ave.) from 11 am to 4 pm. Many of you like me have heard of thin ice and fishing houses going through the ice so I checked with a member of the club on wed to make sure it was still on and safe to go out on the lake. He said it was with about 14 inches of ice out there. Genevieve M. Swenson, passed away on Jan 2nd, family members that survive her include a nephew Tim (deb) root and his family Freda Melchert of Alex passed away on Jan 9th. Survivors include her son Dennis (Jan) Melchert and grandson Mike (Lisa) Melchert. Congratulations to Matt Flogstad who was recently appointed the chief of police in Hancock Enroute to elbow lake on Jan 6th I stopped at the Barrett care center to say hi to my cousin bevy and Esther cline. After concluding my business in el I traveled to Hoffman stopping into see Elroy frank at his computer shop. he said business has been very good. a reminder that if like me you have something to sell he is also an e-bay store. I then stopped at Hoffman home to visit with Marvel Wagner before traveling to Alex where I visited with a friend in the Bethany home. Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the funeral services for Millie Asmus at gslc. she is the first member of our gs “family” to pass away. We were also among the overflow crowd that attended the showing of the move “courageous” at the Morris e free church on Jan 8th. Andy Brevig and I were among those who attended the st co rep party mtg at Detoy’s on Jan 9th. the next meeting is scheduled for Jan 30th. precinct caucuses will be held at the prairie inn on Feb 7th. this is a change from what was announced earlier. the co convention is scheduled for Mar 2nd. A good group of men from gs got together at the church on Feb 10th to work in the basement tearing out the plaster in the ceiling earlier I attended the meeting of the evangelism committee. Feb 11th I stopped in to visit Mary Drips in home in Morris. We talked a lot about many Donnelly people we knew and her brother buzzy who passed away last year, later I stopped in to see Wally McCollar at his shop.

Welcome to another addition of the Donnelly news Weather news: Instead of a white Christmas, we had a white new year’s day after some rain turned to freezing drizzle then snow making for some slippery roads over the weekend. Some strong winds made it feel colder than it was but temps are forecast to warm up later this week and then much of the snow and ice should be gone St J/Kong parish news: the regular schedule resumes on Jan 8th with services at Kong at 8:30 am (followed by coffee hr. in the church basement) and at 11 a.m. at St J (coffee hr. beforehand) and parish ss at Kong at 9:45 am it will also be communion Sunday as well as on the 15th. The Jan newsletter for the parish is now out; extra copies are available in the narthex of each church. GSLC News: adult forums will resume in the church following coffee hour on Jan 8th, new member sun is Jan 15th. The movie “courageous” will be shown on Jan 8th at the Morris E Free Church. Danny and Yvonne Kloos and I, were among those who attended the visitation for Helen Kloos at the funeral home on Dec 29th and her funeral at Kong on the 30th. As I have said before the “upside” of attending a funeral is meeting with people you have not seen for a long time and Fri was one of them as this was the first time I had seen all of Thelma (Kloos) Brandt’s girls in many years Millie Asmus of Morris formerly of the Donnelly area passed away on Jan 2. Her funeral is today (Sat) at 10 am at GSLC of rural Morris Lynn and Shelia Shultz and I attended New Year’s Eve services at Zion Lutheran on Dec 31s Ellen Wilts, Lou Eystad, and Jerry Itzen were among those helping with commodity distribution at the senior center on Jan 4th, Lou said that Jim was up in the hospital but he was discharged on Thur. PR Mike Hanson, Chuck Spohr and I enjoyed lunch together at the common cup on Jan 4th. Rsvp at 589-2951 Helen Kloos of Hoffman formerly of the Donnelly area passed away on Dec 26, her funeral is today (Fri) at 10 am at Kong. Martha Hood of Morris passed away on Dec 25th; survivors include her daughter Marlene (Herb) Nelson and their family of Donnelly. Congratulations to e Morris Area/Minnewaska area swimming and diving team which received the McDonalds silver academic award. MyKalla smith (Mike and Rhoda) is a member of that team; she was also named MVP of the team. Congratulations to Keaton Long and Kody Armstrong who made the honor role at WCAHS A good crowd was on hand at Kong on Dec 22nd of the 2nd installment of the stj/Kong ss program, after the program I stopped in to visit Sam and Dorothy Jordheim. They celebrated their silver anniversary in Sept. On Dec 23rd I stopped in to visit my aunt Pearl Anderson at the sunrise apartments and wish her a merry Christmas. Afterwards I also did the same for several other friends in Morris. On Dec 24th Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended services at gs in Morris. Afterwards they travel to Herman, to attend services at the Eden Reformed church in Herman while I went to Faith for the living nativity service. That eve we were part of a good crowd that attended the services at ST J. Kara and Maren Mathis granddaughters of Geo and Elaine Harstad provided some special music for the service. I finished the day by attending the late services at first Lutheran. On Dec 25th Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended services at Gs and later the community dinner at first Lutheran. After dinner I traveled to the WWV to wish some of the residents a Merry Christmas while there I had an opportunity to visit a little with my former neighbor John Armstrong. In the eve Jim and Julie Busse of Appleton stopped by for a while. Verle and Della Dunn entertained members of the Dunn family for supper on Christmas Eve. One of the nice things about doing this column is that on occasion I hear from somebody with more details on something I wrote. In last week’s column I mentioned that Jim Weinreis had stopped by to visit with McCollar and mentioned his daughter had a very popular restaurant in the cities, Carol’s in Blaine. I had an e-mail from Ron Holdgrafer from Chicago who said that when Carol was growing up, she spent a lot of time on his farm and was hoping to get to see her, if he gets up this way this summer. Sam and Dorothy Jordheim traveled to Avon on Dec 24th first attending services at Bethlehem Lutheran then traveling to their daughter Gail’s for supper and gift exchange. They stayed overnight and returned home the next day. Bonnie Fabian of Hoffman spent some time Sat aft visiting her mother (Pearl A. Anderson) at her apt in Morris, in the eve Pearl’s son Larry ( Peggy) Wilke and their daughter Kris spent some time visiting her. Mark and Pam, Mathis, and their daughters Kara and Maren spent some time over the weekend visiting her parents George and Elaine Harstad and other family and friends in the area.
