DONNELLY NEWS

Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news. Please remember to check out my blog (donnellyminn.blogspot.com) for more news, obits and other info.
Weather news: It has been hot during the last week but much less humid with a few severe thunderstorms and some heavy rains mixed in with it. crops continue to do well the grain is rapidly ripening. The crops on display in Herman looked really nice; however most of the garden produce was only fair.
STJ/KONG PARISH News: the parish is coordinating a block party featuring a bike ride, food and music between St J and the Hall on Aug. 6th to benefit the st co food shelf. The day will start with a bike ride from the “place to be” at 1:30 pm call 246-3221 for info about this event. Serving will start at 5 pm and continue until 7:30 pm or until the food is gone. On the menu is chicken, potato salad, baked beans and chips. The LL will be selling pop and water and the 4-h will be serving ice cream treats. There will be a DJ at “the place to be” beginning at 8 p.m... Everyone is welcome to come and join the festivities. There will be a free will offering for the meal. The all committee/joint council meeting planning meeting will be held on Aug. 6th at 9 am at St J. Note this is a change of time from what was announced earlier.

GSLC news: a nine part women’s bible study will begin on Aug. 3rd and continuing every wed at 9 am. There will be a trip to valley fair on Aug. 6th
VBS will be on Wednesday nights on August 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th at 5:30 pm. at the church. VBS will be for ages pre-school through adults. Each eve will start with a potluck dinner and then have a bible story for the night. The adults will attend a bible study with Pr. Michael and the children (pre-school and up) will attend activities, games and craft all revolving around the bible story. Everyone will come back together at the end of the night for singing and fellowship. If you are interested in attending please sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway or let Pr. Mike know.
Trinity Lutheran Church of Alberta will have their annual sweet corn feed on Aug. 6th beginning at 5 pm
There will be no wam mtg in Aug.

There will be a bridal shower for Brittney Schmiesing bride to be of Jesse Boe; today (Sat) at Our Savior’s Lutheran church in Chokio at 9 am. Parents of the couple are Randy and Karla Schmiesing of Chokio, and Randy and Cathy Boe of Morris, her grandparents Wally and Marlys Geise
NHAS will have their customer appreciation supper on Aug 3rd beginning at 5 pm at Niemackl Lake Park.

Stan Vipond of Norcross passed away on July 24th; his wife MaryAnn (Kopel) is among the family members who survive him.

Congratulations to the Morris VFW bb team that placed third in the starbuck tournament. Chandler Erickson is a member of that team. He and his brother Alex are members of the Morris Legion team which recently won the NW division of the dist. 7 playoffs
Congratulations to the following runners who competed in the Marv Meyer 5 k run during ppd in Morris. Mackenzie (1st) and Pat (52nd) Smith, Rebekah (4th) and Cammi (6th) Aanerud, Beth (7th) and Becca (12th) Holland
Congratulations to Braeden, Keaton and Ryanne Long who were among the 4-hers winning grand and reserve championships on their projects at the Grant do fair. In the women’s building Barb Simpson and Chrissy Oachs won grand championships and Barb won the silver tray from Minn -Dak for baking with sugar.
Congratulations to the Green Babe Ruth team that was runner up in the Babe Ruth tournament, Bo Gullickson was a member of that team and his Dad, Vance was the coach. In an earlier column I mistakenly said he was coach of the orange team.

Congratulations to the Parker Kloos construction co for winning a bronze award at the St Co Relay for Life. Renee Kloos was the third place finisher in the individual award category.
Ken Van Horn and I were among those who attended the customer appreciation open house at Prairie trailers on July 22nd. We were also among those who attended some of the Crazy Daze activities in Morris on July 27th.
Joyce Steuck and I were among those who spent some time in Herman over the weekend enjoying some of the exhibits and activities of the Grant Co Fair. On my way home on July 26th I visited Selma Bruse in her apt at the Pullman house.
Cassie and Kellie Wilts returned home on July 22nd from an enjoyable week at Bible camp.

Welcome to another edition of the Donnelly news. If you have news for me please remember that my deadline is Tue eve for my mailboxes and wed eve for everything else.

Weather news: The past week has been very hot and humid with a few thunderstorms thrown in for good measure. The power was out here for a while on Sun eve. It has helped the crops esp. the beans. Some of the grain fields I saw on my trip were starting to ripen and there was a lot of hay down.

STJ/KONG PARISH News: All joint council members as well as members of the fellowship and outreach committee are encouraged to attend a planning meeting for the upcoming block party on July 25th at 7 pm at st J. our parish will be coordinating the party which will be on Aug. 6th beginning at 5 pm. I will more details about it next week.

GSLC news: There is a signup sheet at church for a nine part women’s bible study beginning on Aug. 3rd and continuing every wed at 9 am. On Aug. 6th there will be a trip to valley fair

Brittney Schmiesing and Jesse Boe, along with their parents, Randy and Karla Schmiesing of Chokio, and Randy and Cathy Boe of Morris, would like to announce their engagement and upcoming marriage. A September 24, 2011 wedding is planned at Faith Lutheran Church in Morris with a reception and dance following at the Prairie Inn of Morris. Her grandparents are Wally and Marlys Giese.

There will be a bridal shower for her on Sat July 30th at our savior’s Lutheran church in Chokio at 9 am.

Vern Anderson of Priest River Idaho passed away on July 9th at the age of 92.Among the family members that survive him are a sister Opal Harstad and her family.

On July 17th and 18th I took a mini vacation. I left Sat am stopping in Alberta for the SAL pancake breakfast. I then traveled to walnut grove where I took in some of the family festival activities at the park, bordered a bus for a tour of some of the sights in the area, went through the museum and attended the pageant in the eve. After camping out overnight in Sandborn I traveled to Springfield to attended services at St Paul's Lutheran church. During the coffee hour afterwards I had an opportunity to visit with our former pastor Luther Johnson and his family some. In the aft I stopped by the “end of line railroad” museum in Currie, the gravesite of my uncle and aunt Vernon and Mabel Van Olst in Chandler ,and in Madison to visit with a distant relative Doris Peterson before arriving home Sun evening shortly before the thunderstorm hit our area. It is as wet down there as it is around here.

Karen Long supplied me with the following info about her uncle Vern Anderson. He was born in Seattle Wash the son of Vedar and Olive (Holt) Anderson. Olive was born on a farm site just east of where Charles and Karen Long now live (11458 200th ave. Herman) Vern and his wife Thelma visited this location in the 80's and made several trips to MN through the years. Opal and Ervin Harstad and family also traveled to Northern Idaho every summer for many yrs. visiting opal’s family there. Karen says it is very beautiful country there. Vern was an avid gardener. When they came to MN he enjoyed visits with Chester and Edna Olson Paul and Laverne Kopitzhe, Willie Martian and others but esp. his aunt Marie Krogan. He served his country in the army. He worked as a millwright or a mechanic most of his life. He is survived by his wife of 65 years two sons Frank and George and their spouses 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew Eddie Harstad. A memorial service was held on July 16th with burial at evergreen cemetery Priest River Id.

Jim and Lou Eystad accompanied Ellen Wilts to in Milford IA on July 17th to enroll Kellie and Carrie in the Ingham Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp there. Several members of gslc donated money for the kids to attend the camp.

Weather news: after a sunny and very hot weekend things cooled off some sun eve after a thunderstorm went through the area causing some minor damage in the area. Small grains and corn are looking very good, the beans are lagging some.

The Christian alternative rock group “the city Harmonic” will be appearing at Trinity Lutheran church in Cyrus on July 17th at 7 pm. The concert is free but limited to 250 people so advance reservations are encouraged by calling 287-0409 or e-mailing jmaanum@runestone.net. An offering will be taken for feed my starving children.
The herrlinger family will be in concert at Fron Lutheran in Starbuck today (Sat) @ 7 pm and tomorrow (sun) at 10:45 am.
There will be a sing a long at Immanuel Lutheran church of rural Barrett on July 20th at 7 pm

LeAnn Van horn and Ben Honzay are engaged to be married on Aug 6th in Morris. Her parents are Clay (Marlene) and Sharon Van Horn.
Marjorie Ellen Mecklenburg passed away on July 11th a son, Loren (Kaylene) and their family is among the family members who survive her. Jeanne Ennen and I were among those who attended her funeral at the First Baptist church in Morris on July 13th. In the eve the Kopacek family and I were among those who attended the rta meeting at the wcahs in Barrett. Enroute to the meeting I stopped to visit Esther Cline at the Barrett Care center. Her husband Ken is the vet’s home in Fergus for the time being. Irene Goldenstein has purchased their home in Donnelly.
The dance group We Gets Up, placed second at the Kiwanis talent contest on July 8th. Justine Huebner is a member of that dance troupe.
Congratulations to Auddy and Islande Sperr who recently won several awards at the owl bb camp held at UMM. MaKenzie Smith was a member of the Iowa Basketball champions at that camp.
Congratulations to Adam Schmidgall, Donnelly who was the winner of $100 Chamber Cash in ppd button drawing.

Steve Fults and I were among those who attended the summer field day the wcroc in Morris on July 8th. Mark Erickson and Brain Kruize are on the advisory board. In the aft I took in the Horizontal grandeur exhibit at the museum and visited some with Wally McCollar. In the eve Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the community supper at Eastside Park. After the supper it was back to Donnelly for a planning meeting about the block party our parish is coordinating on Aug .6th.

On July 10th Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended services at gslc and later the pancake feed at the Morris fire Hall. After the breakfast I went to the museum for their dedication ceremony Chester Larson and Jeanne Ennen helped cut the ribbon. Later that afternoon Sámi Searle (trail dusters queen) and Natalie Johnston (st co pork ambassador), as well as the threshing Bee royalty were some of the participants in the ppd parade. Maynard Mau pulled the float with his Model A Ford definitely an attention getter! After the parade Hailey Lesmeister (Casey and Daniele) was one of the dancers from footnotes studio that gave a dance performance at the band shell. Enroute home I stopped at Andy Aanerud’s farm for Cammi’s graduation party.
The Donnelly com club had their monthly meeting on July 11th.as we continue to finalize plans for the threshing bee. The buttons are here and will be on sale in the area soon or you can buy one from one of the officers. Remember you can save a dollar by buying in advance. This year’s theme is “Donnelly a great place to live”
Joan & Jerry Kopacek spent Friday and Saturday (July 8-9th) At Luther Crest Bible Camp working the quilt auction. Friday evening they were treated to a pontoon tour of Lake Carlos.

Luther Crest’s 22nd annual quilt auction will be held today (Sat) at the camp by Alex beginning with a review at 10 am followed by lunch and the auction. The silent auction winners will be announced at 1:00 P.M. during the live auction not afterwards as stated in the parish newsletter.

Congratulations to the Morris VFW team that won the consolation championship at the Cold Spring/Roccori tournament recently, Chandler Erickson is a member of that team
Congratulations to the Morris legion team that won their own tournament recently. Chandler and Alex Erickson are members of that team. Alex was also named to the 2011 wcc south all -conference team in baseball and was also named MVP of the conference.
Congratulations to Kourtney Giese who received honorable mention on the wcc south conference all-conference team in track.
Congratulations to all the Donnelly area students that made the last quarter honor roll at MAHS too many to mention individually.

Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the Kiwanis talent contest at Eastside Park on June 30th. The “Juharis Tribe” won first place. Afterwards I watched part of a Babe Ruth game at eagle’s complex. The black team coached by Rob Jergenson won the game over Vance Gullickson’s orange team
July 3rd Denny Bourssea and I attended the Independence Day celebration at Kong on July 3rd. Later our threshing bee royalty were participants in the heritage day’s parade in Starbuck. After the parade I stopped into the Minnewaska Lutheran home to say hi to some of the residents there and also visited with Darlene Christofferson at her home. Later in the aft Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the golden wedding celebration for Dick and Myrna Hufford at gslc near Morris
The threshing bee royalty were also part of the 4th of July parade in Hancock; Sami Searle the “trail dusters” queen was also in the parade. Later I watched some of the tractor pull I am sure some of those pullers will also be in Donnelly for our tractor pull. At our last meeting it was decided to add another class for smaller tractors.
Pr. Mike Hanson and I had a chance to sit down for a “get acquainted” visit at the common cup in Morris on July 6th. Later Jim and Lou Eystad and I helped unload some of the items from the old good shepherd Lutheran church from the storage trailer and into the old prairie trailer building. Many of the items (old books, hymnals, tables, chairs, dishes, Christmas decorations etc.) will be sold at a garage sale next month. You can also donate items for the sale for more info call Dianne at 589-1130. Enroute home I stopped in Donnelly to watch the second game of the ladies sb doubleheader.

DONNELLY NEWS

Weather news: for the first time this year we have gone a whole week without any major rains it has been mostly sunny and mild most of the week and things are starting to dry out some the crops in the area are looking very good.
STJ/KONG PARISH News There will be joint services at Kong on July 3rd at 10:30 am, followed by a flag raising ceremony, and potluck dinner. On July 10th service times switch with services at Kong at 8:30 am and St J at 10:15 am.
GSLC news: A trip to valley fair is planned for Aug 7th, vbs will be held on wed eves during Aug. for more info contact Pr. Mike
There will be no wam mtg in July or Aug the next one is scheduled for sept 10th.
Summertime means some sport activities in town. The final ladies sb game in Donnelly will be held July 6th at Aanerud field. The tri county horseshoe league also has games at the court in Donnelly by the PO on Tue eves.
Due to the July 4th holiday the following changes will take place. The city council will meet on July 5th at 7 pm at city hall. On July 11th the red hatters will meet at the Place to be at 1 pm (They will also have a meeting on July 22nd at the 4-h food stand in Herman at 11 am), the bookmobile will be in town at 3:30 pm, and the firemen, Rendsville 4-h club and the Donnelly community club will meet at the fire hall, town hall, and St J at 7 pm.
The po and most Donnelly area business will be closed on July 4th.
There will be an open house for Cammi Aanerud in honor of her graduation from the “century farm academy” on Sat aft July 9th at her home near Donnelly (15290 510th avenue),
Harriet Anderson of Morris passed away on June 28th. A brother Paul (Arlene) Nelson of Donnelly is among the family members who survive her.
Congratulations to Rose (Bob) Uhden who was recently honored for exceeding the membership goal as president of the Herman American legion auxiliary
Congratulations to Jason Strand who was recently chosen to fill the vacant seat on Herman city council.
Congratulations to Tara Flaten who was recently named to the honor roll at Hancock HS
Congratulations to Justin Johnston who recently won a scholarship from the MN Pork board. Congratulations to the Stevens county and Donnelly city attorney Charlie Glassrud who was recently appointed to be a judge in the 8th judicial dist. There will be an open house in his honor in the upper level of the St co courthouse on July 8th from 2:30-4 pm.
Congratulations to Mike Cihak who recently elected treasurer of the Eagles and to Fran Cin who was elected VP of the Eagles Auxiliary.
The Rendsville 4-h recently welcomed two new members Tabitha Van Horn (Josh and Beth Kieffer and the late Curtis Van Horn) and Carter Fults (Joey and Jen)

Bernice Erdahl and I were among the good crowd who attended the Kiwanis talent contest at Eastside Park on June 23rd. The dance group “We Get Up” won first place Justine Huebner was a member of that group, 2nd place went to the dance group “Recharge” Beth Holland and Sydney Byer were members of that group. By the time I got to Donnelly the sb game was over with so I visited with Denny Anderson in his home for a while.
Jim and Lou Eystad and I were among the good crowd that helped Ellen Wilts celebrate her 50th birthday at the Legion in Herman.
On June 25th I traveled to Willmar for the Willmar fest parade, and ran into my classmate Tony Cruze again. After the parade I visited my relatives Milt and Rudy Anderson and Roma Fostervold in their homes. Later the threshing bee royalty were among the participants in the old settler’s reunion parade in Barrett. After the parade it was time for supper ,then I stopped at the home to visit Esther Cline then stopped to look at the remolded lakeside pavilion and finally at the swimming beach but decided the water was too cold for a swim.
Jim and Lou Eystad attended the dedication service of gslc on June 26th. Thanks to everyone who helped to organize the great program, prepare and serve the dinner and esp. to the Good Shepherd Cemetery assoc. for their very generous donation to the church. In the aft I traveled to Alex for the Viking land band festival, Park Center was the grand champion. In the eve I visited a friend in the Bethany Home.
Kellen Erdahl was part of a Rockies LL team that won their playoff game in Donnelly on June 27th.
Vedar Harstad and I attended the men’s health night at scmc on June 29th. Later Deanna Recker and I attended the New Wine homecoming performance at first Lutheran. Suzanne Smith was the keyboardist; Tom Holland, Amber Recker and Kristina Johnson were members of the cast.
Deanna Heuer and I were among those who watched part of the ladies sb games in Donnelly on June 29th.
Pearl Amundson recently spent some time visiting her brother and sister law Chester and Gloria Larson and other family and friends in the area.
Lorraine (Jim) Aanerud returned June 25th from a mission trip to Rwanda, Africa as part of a team of ten from the Maple Grove evangelical Free Church who ministered at a free church Kigali the capital of Rwanda. Her daughter and son in law Laurie and Mike McBride and granddaughters Meghan and Elizabeth were also part of the team. They visited another church and school to encourage them in their ministry. They saw God at work in Africa. While in Africa they also enjoyed a safari in Kenya for three days while they viewed close up the wild animals of Africa.
