donnelly news

Next edition Feb 25th –Mar 2nd Welcome to another addition of the Donnelly news note that due to weekly bible study I will be checking my boxes on Thursday a.m. for the next few weeks
  Weather news: winter made a comeback on Mon with the heaviest snowfall (2-5”) of the year so far making roads very slippery and unfortunately that resulted in several deadly accidents in the area. It also resulted in the cancelation of several events and first late start of winter for several schools in the area on Tue. Thankfully temps continue to be fairly mild although there is more snow in the forecast. Guess it is to be expected after all it is tournament time! Thanks again to Good Samaritan who continue to blow our sidewalk out.
 St J/Kong parish news: Lenten services will again alternate between St J (Mar 7th) and Kong (Mar 14th) this year with services at 7 pm coffee fellowship to follow.
There will be a parish bible study “Christ in the strangest places” during lent at ST J on Thursday am at 10:30 am and repeated in the eve at Kong at 7 pm..
There will be joint services at Kong Feb 26th at 11 am with the ss kids singing. Services will also be broadcast on KMRS at 11 am in memory of Erwin and Lenna Smith by Gary and Pat smith and family.  GSLC news: beginning on Feb 29th and continuing until the end of lent there will be a pot luck supper at 5:45 pm with services at 6:45 pm, for more info call PR Mike.
 LCM Morris is one of sponsors of a forum “Christian basis for welcoming glbt persons”. The event begins on 3/1 with dinner at the Christus house from 5:30 -7 pm followed by the keynote speaker from 7:30 -9pm at the senior center. On Mar 2nd the event concludes with a discussion in the McGinnis room of the brigs library on the umm campus. The speaker for the weekend is David Weiss the author of the book “to the tune of a welcoming God”
The annual meeting of the Donnelly community club scheduled for Feb 13th has been ppd to Mar 12th.
The st co gen soc will hold its first meeting of the year on Mar 1st at 1:30 pm at the library
The st co rep party will have their county convention on Mar 2nd at 7 pm at the Morris senior center; this is a change of location from what was announced earlier
On Mar 5th the bookmobile will be in town in the aft; the city council will meet at the hall and the Rendsville 4-h will meet in the fire hall at 7 pm
Several ladies in our area have celebrated significant birthdays lately, Bertha Larson (90), Selma Brusse (93) and Marlys Alm (97)
Congratulations to Kristi Geise who was named all-conference in gymnastics from MAHS Congratulations to Adam Uphoff (extra mile 8th grade) and Dalton Leupke (citizenship 9th grade); who were recently named students of the quarter, at mahs
Congratulations to Kendra Sperr who won a corn growers Scholarship she is a student at SDSU
Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended services at gs and bible study at gslc on Feb 19th.
 Later we travelled to Herman for the Niemackl lake park fundraiser. Afterwards I visited Selma brusse in her apt.
Later Agnes Searle and I were among those who attended the memorial service for Harley Grantham at Federated church in the aft, he was a former counselor at mahs
 The Donnelly community club was among the non-profits org that exhibited at the nonprofit expo at the mahs gym on Feb 20th. Thanks to the region 4 mental health council for the nice sweatshirt Iwon 
David Flugel and I were among those who partook in the “listening session” held out at the wcroc administrative building on Feb 22nd.
There was a 97th birthday party for Marlys Alm at the home of her granddaughter Rhonda and Kevin Asmus in Chokio on Feb 19th. Among those attending were son, John from Ohio; daughters; barb Riley & Connie Reimers who came up from Texas for the party along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great –great grandchildren as well as Sid and Carol Wilcox of Morris and Jim and Lou Eystad of Donnelly
 Jim and Lou Eystad and I were among those who attended Ash Wednesday services at gslc on FEB 22nd.

Next edition Feb 18th-24th Welcome to another addition of the Donnelly news please remember that although I try to double check everything at time I get the info wrong for an event of meeting so please double check before you plan to attend something that the day, time, and place are accurate \Weather news: After a cold snap last week that saw some of the coldest weather of the winter temps have rebounded back into the ‘30’s this week and there are still no major storms on the horizon. St J/Kong parish news: Lenten services will again alternate between Kong (Feb 29th) and St J (Mar7th) this year with services at 7 pm coffee fellowship to follow. There will be a parish bible study “Christ in the strangest places” during lent; time, dates, and place to be announced The kclw will be selling tubes of m&M’s for sale after services. Take the tubes home and fill them up with quarters and bring them back to be used in the fight against malaria The ss kids will be making fleece blankets to distribute to those in our congregation who are sick in the hospital have had surgery etc. They need anti pill fleece, donations and cutters. DeWayne Jackson of Starbuck passed away on Feb 11th, among the family members that survive him are his sister in law Corrine (devick) and husband Eldred Jackson of Starbuck. Virene Olson and Alice Hallman were among those who attended his funeral at Immanuel Lutheran church of rural starbuck on Feb 15th. Congratulations to Paul Erstad Jr. who was recently reelected as treasurer the board of the seic Congratulations to Brady Gillespie who was recently chosen as snow week king at C-A HS A good crowd, including some from the Donnelly area; were among those of us who attended the NHAS annual meeting at the bigwood event center in Fergus falls Feb 9th. They had another good year with over $ 8 million dollars in profit. Enroute home I stopped at the barret care center to visit with my cousin bev Hurlbut Several Donnelly area residents were among those of us who attended the funeral for Lloyd Brandt at Kong on Feb 10th. He was a good friend and former neighbor and I will miss him a lot. After the funeral I stopped in Donnelly to visit with Verle and Della Dunn in their home. On Feb 11th several of us spent some time cleaning up at gslc in the am. In the aft I traveled to the lakeside ball room in Glenwood for the 100th birthday party for Cora stoen. Bernice Erdahl and I were among those who attended the schs dinner and annual meeting at the museum on Feb 12th. Unfortunately Doug Ohman was sick and unable to attend. Afterwards I stopped in to visit David Flugel at his house. Feb 15th I traveled to Donnelly to check my boxes then stopped in to visit Sam Johrdheim for a while in his home. Returning to Morris I stopped into GSLC to visit with PR mike for a while then went to visit Virene Olson at her home. She said Elda Carol passed away from a heart attack. Enroute home I made one of my frequent stops at McCollar Jewelry for a visit with Wally. February 9th, Jerry and Joan Kopacek along with Helen Kill spent an enjoyable afternoon in Hoffman visiting Marvel Wagner.

This year’s guest is Doug Ohman and his program is “libraries of MN”. As most of you know he has presented several programs at the threshing bee and I also had a chance to see this program in elbow lake year. Family members that survive him include his wife Gloria and daughter Denna of Donnelly. Joan Fults and I were among those who attended the visitation for Delroy Heuer at the funeral home on Feb 7th. His wife Gloria is a distant relative of mine. Lloyd Brandt formerly of Donnelly passed away Feb 6th. Many of you may remember him as the “anchor” of the Kong men’s quartet for many decades Thanks to Dick Goldenstein for the following info: Alma (Goldenstein) Quaal passed away 2/6/12 at Wadena, MN. She was the wife of Ruben Quaal of Donnelly who preceded her in death. The funeral is @ 2:00 pm Monday 2/13 at Hohnson Memorial Home in Wadena. She was a bookkeeper at the Donnelly creamery for over 30 years her obit is in this edtion of the morris s-t it is also on my blog Congratulations to the following Morris bpa students that won at the regional meet and will be competing in state competition: James Burke and Justine Huebner (as Individuals) John Huebner, Bo Gullickson, Sydney Beyer, Kourtney Geise, Carely Gullickson and Beth Holland (as members of a team). Feb 4th I represented gslc at a mission’s conference in Watertown SD, enroute home I stopped in Madison to visit a distant relative Doris Peterson. In it’s a small world category while shopping at the Watertown Wal-Mart I ran into Dick and Deb Mahoney from Morris who had a grandson in a wrestling tournament there Feb 5th Andy Brevig and I were among a good crowd that attended the Kong annual meeting and dinner afterwards About a hundred twenty people including some from the Donnelly area attended the precinct caucuses at the prairie inn on Feb 7th; Rick Santorum won the straw poll. The county convention is scheduled for Mar 2nd at 7 pm at the American legion. The DFL convention will be held on Mar 24th also at the legion at 9 am A good crowd including many from the Donnelly area attended the funeral for Delroy Heuer at faith Lutheran in Morris on Feb 8th. Later in the day I traveled to Donnelly to check my boxes and ran into glen werk who had stopped at the po for his mail. He said he was feeling better, as many of you know he has been in and out of the hospital lately.

quaal obit

Alma Quaal Memorial services for Alma E. Quaal of Wadena, will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, February 13, 2012 at the Johnson Memorial Home in Wadena with Pastor Stephen Meltzer presiding. Alma passed away at the age of 89 years on Monday, February 6, 2012 at the Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena. Alma Elvira Quaal was born on August 2, 1922 to Siebelt W. and Ella K. (Rankin) Goldenstein at Pipestone, MN. She was united in marriage with Reuben Alfred Quaal on June 22, 1957 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. She worked for over 30 years as a bookkeeper at the Donnelly Creamery in Donnelly, MN. She also worked for a number of years at the Wayzata Bank before working at Erickson’s Super Valu in Wayzata, MN. She retired and moved to Verndale in 1985 then later moved to her home in Wadena. She enjoyed cooking, especially cookies, jams and preserves for family and friends. She also enjoyed collecting cookbooks, embroidery, and tending her flowers and vegetable gardens from which she became known as the “Tomato Lady”. Alma was preceded in death by her husband Reuben in 1980; parents Siebelt and Ella Goldenstein; son Quentin; daughters Grace Sackman and Candace Ertl; five brothers, five sisters and 2 infant siblings; and granddaughters Heather Sackman and Brianna Sackman. She is survived by her sons John (Connie) of Underwood and Myron (Linda) of Verndale; sons-in-law Bill Sackman of Alta Loma, CA and Richard “Dick” (Ruth) Ertl of Mayer, MN; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Alma’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery at Long Lake, MN

Next edition Feb 4th-10th Welcome to another addition of the Donnelly news Weather news: several inches of snow over the weekend brought out the shovels and blowers and made winter sports enthusiasts happy. However temps continue to remain mild and there is still no forecast of any major storms on the horizon, Thanks to the Good Samaritan who blew out the sidewalk on our block several times again this week. Alyssa uphoff is one the artists whose work is being showcased at the common cup. Jan 26th Kathy Bahr and I attended the twins’ caravan stop at the pizza ranch in Morris. Jan 27th I visited Irene Strand in her apartment at the heritage apartments in Morris. She said that earlier in the week she attended a birthday party for Lyla Cin at the Glenwood home and she was very good that day. Jan 28th I visited my aunt Pearl Anderson at her apartment in the sunrise apartments in Morris to wish her a belated happy birthday ,her birthday was the 27th. She said several members of her family had been home to help her celebrate the previous day. Later I visited Gary Weirs in his apt the green river apartments and enroute home I stopped at McCollar Jewelry for one of my frequent visits with him. In the eve I attended the contemporary worship service sponsored by the Morris community church at the MAHS auditorium. Jan 29th Andy Brevig and I attended youth service sun at St J; Joan Kopacek reports that there was a good crowd on hand afterward for the ST J annual meeting and dinner. Andy and I also attended the Stevens county Republican Party central committee meeting on Jan 30th at Detoy’s in Morris. Plans were finalized for the precinct caucuses to be held on Feb 7th.It was announced that the county convention will be held in early Mar, the 7th district convention will be held in Alex in late Mar and the state convention in St Cloud in early May Last week Jim and Lou Eystad traveled to Wheaton with Doug and Ellen Wilts and girls to a bb game where w-h-n played c-g- b, Kellie Wilts was one of the players on the team Feb 1st they helped Vince Dalager celebrate his 95th birthday at the senior center.
