MEYER MISSION NEWS

On the Road Again – in Liberia

March 2010

Dear Friends:

“This is the first soil profile we have ever seen here at the University” was Mr. Massaquoi’s response upon receiving a soil audit. “My pleasure to do that for you” was Craig’s reply.

In February at Cuttington University near Gbarnga, Bong County, Liberia, we met Mr. Molly Massaquoi, the assistant farm manager. A Lutheran pastor who attended there had introduced us to him last year when Dr. Ralph von Qualen a plant pathologist was with us. This time I brought along Craig Paskvan, a soil expert and his wife Mary. I – Delano - like to be with “Heavy Weights” when going to universities.

Craig has been our soils consultant since Martin Augustine passed away some years ago. Craig has been making recommendations on how to balance soils, based on the soil samples we have been sending to USA for analysis. At Cuttington U. we delivered the soil audit and inventory report from soil samples we took there last year. We also gave Mr. Massaquoi Craig’s recommendations for correcting the soil imbalance.

Mr. Massaquoi also thanked us for the training materials we brought to him last year. He said he lets students read the materials and then they return it for others to read. We were pleased and impressed. We again gave more materials and also offered to share information with Cuttington via the internet in the future.

In gratitude for the materials and information, we were given three chickens. Where else in the world would you receive a chicken dinner on the hoof – so to speak? We enjoyed our chickens upon our return to Gbarnga. Thank you Mr. Massaquoi!

This was Craig and Mary Paskvan’s first trip to remote African villages and so quite an adventure for them and a joy for us to have them with us.

In Foya, Lofa County we were happy to find our church members Saturday evening and enjoy Sunday Bible study followed by worship services with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Liberia. Craig and Mary were impressed to hear Biblical truths being taught and expressed in such remote locations. It truly is an encouragement for our faith as we often hear Liberian and Sierra Leonean Christians express how they placed confidence in Jesus Christ through their experiences as they were caught in war. The Lord is my Strength and Shield. Psalm 28:7

Mary Paskvan put her training as a teacher to good use at sessions. “Think, pair, share” is a teaching technique introduced by Mary to help students to analyze in their own minds, discuss what

they have learned with someone else, and then share their ideas with the group. The technique reinforces the teaching and helps people recall their new ideas and knowledge. Sometimes the concepts and method caught on quickly, and other times we had to role play the “Think, pair, share” to get the meaning across.

An unexpected opportunity came as a result of our long time acquaintance with Joseph Yasseh who used to be the President of the Lutheran Church in Guinea. Joseph now resides in Foya Central and is working with the Vice President of Liberia on his cocoa plantation. Joseph asked us to travel to Warsongar Village to examine the cocoa trees because the trees are not producing well as a result of severe molds. Joseph guided us on a tour of part of the plantation. Craig took a soil sample and pulled leaves for leaf analysis. I have sent these samples to Brookside Laboratory. Imagine the impact if our people are able to overcome this roadblock to profitable cocoa production.

We felt like the “Dukes of Hazard” trying to reach Garplay, Nimba County. We were only a half hour away from Garplay, approaching from the west, when we were informed by customs personnel, that the bridge ahead was out and that we would have to detour. The detour took us 3 hours and as we neared Garplay from the northwest, a motorcyclist flagged us down saying a truck loaded with coffee had just broken through the bridge a few miles ahead.

We then went back a few miles and tried another route. When asking about the route to Garplay, we received so many conflicting reports that we stopped asking anyone and just pressed on. We later learned the reason for conflicting reports – the section of road we needed to travel was quite bad, but locked in 4 wheel drive & low transfer, we got through and reached Garplay at 8 PM. Mary said that after retirement from mission, I - Delano should start driving for NASCAR.

We were warmly received at Garplay by fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. The village children sang on into the night making the effort totally worthwhile.

Philippians 1: 27- Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. The person credited with bringing the Lutheran Church to the village of Compound-Su in Gbapolu County is Victoria Fayia. Victoria was working with a non-governmental organization (NGO) that focused of imparting skills to ex-combatants. She was teaching sewing and tailoring as part of a reintegration program to help former rebels to learn a useful skill. Victoria conducted herself in a way that drew people to want to know Jesus Christ and they asked for the Lutheran Church.

Rev. Nathaniel Taylor, who is working with the local pastor, guided us to Compound-Su along with Moses Fayia and Johnson. Johnson was with us for the first time to learn more about agricultural training. Moses, Victoria’s husband, had done some agricultural training in compound-Su already. He again was a great help in teaching and made our last stop in Liberia a joy for Linda and me. Moses expressed the hope that Linda and I return for short-term agricultural teaching in Liberia. What a blessing it has been for us to work with faithful Christians who serve!

This recent 3-week trip was our final visit to Liberia as career missionaries. We have been blessed to have growing relationships with many friends in Liberia over the years, and so parting was time of mixed emotions for us. We are happy to be completing our career missionary service on positive notes, as many we worked with in the past, have expressed an appreciation, understanding and positive results from the training we have been doing. It has been an awesome privilege to share our faith and see our Lord bringing souls to faith in West Africa.

Looking back at many Christian friends we have met along the way and hope to meet again, we recall Revelation 7: 9, “After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were dressed in white and holding palm branches in their hand.”

Because of Christ’s resurrection from the dead, we have the confidence that we too will live with Him, standing at His throne along with the great multitude of believers. May you celebrate with joy His victory over death this Easter!

1 Corinthians 15: 54b & 57 - Death has been swallowed up in victory. Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

PRAYER REQUESTS

Thank God for safety, strength, health and positive training sessions in Liberia.

Ask the Lord for safe travel to the Missionary Retreat to be held in Ghana in late March and on to Northern Ghana where Linda and I will say “Good bye” to old friends we worked with from 1994 - 2000.

Pray for safety and health for Dr. Ralph von Qualen, Linda and Delano as we travel to Guinea in mid April for agricultural training sessions.

That was quite an event for our small town!
I have posted her obit, as well as those of Gloria Brouwer and Elysia Moyle on my blog.

Dona Agosti
Longtime Anchorage resident Dona Agosti, 85, died peacefully March 9, 2010, at the Anchorage Pioneer Home.

A rosary will be at noon Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 3900 Wisconsin St. in Anchorage. A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. A reception will follow at the Lunney Center.

Dona was born Jan. 11, 1925, in Donnelly, Minn. Following graduation from St. Mary's Catholic High School, she attended the University of Minnesota, majoring in journalism. She worked for Military Intelligence in Berlin during the post-World War II airlift crisis and wrote a column about her experiences for a Minnesota newspaper.

She met Lino, her husband of 55 years, in Colorado in 1954. Shortly after Alaska Statehood, they moved with their three daughters from Minneapolis to Anchorage, where the family grew by four sons. The Agostis resided in their Loussac Drive home in Turnagain since 1961.

Even while raising seven children, Dona was active in her church as a member of Holy Family Cathedral and then Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. In the '60s, Dona helped organize and direct Catholic Charities (now Catholic Social Services), as well as St. Francis House. She also helped found F.I.S.H., an ecumenical "people helping people" organization, and volunteered for 18 years. Dona was the program production chair for the 1981 visit of Pope John Paul II. In the '70s, she and Lino were initiated as Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

Dona served as an election board member for 23 years, was a member of the Anchorage Republican Women's Club, worked on senatorial and gubernatorial campaigns, and was a Republican State Convention delegate and National Organization for Women state delegate. At Turnagain, Romig and West, she supported her children's band, choir, sports and science fair activities, as well as Camp Fire Girl, Boy Scout and Little League activities.

Dona was named Alaska Mother of the Year in 1984.

Professionally, Dona helped her husband build their company, Refrigeration and Food Equipment Inc., and also served as its president. In 1992, she was named a YWCA Woman of Achievement.

Dona loved the Alaska outdoors. She was an avid backpacker and enjoyed cross-country skiing. She served as hiking chair for the Mountaineering Club of Alaska for 10 years and led extended wilderness hikes throughout Alaska. Dona covered more than 2,600 miles and wrote "The High Country Backpacker," a book designed to help new hikers prepare and avoid injury. "Wilma: An Alaska Tale of One Teacher, Two Teenagers and Three Wolverines," another book that Dona wrote 40 years ago, was published recently. Dona loved spending time at the remote log cabin the family built outside Talkeetna. Reminiscent of her childhood cabin in northern Minnesota, Agosti Lake became her private piece of wilderness and provided many bear stories and other tall tales. She inherited her mother's green thumb and kept lovely flower gardens.

Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 19 years ago, Dona led a full and rewarding life. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband, Lino; daughter Nancy and husband Fawzy Fawzy of Malibu, and their children Joanna and husband Ernesto Morales, of Culver City, and Monica, of Chicago; daughter Jan and husband Frank Woodruff, and their children, Amy, Zack and Fletcher, of Seattle; daughter Ann and husband Steve Hackett, of Homer; daughter Tam and husband Hans Gisler, and their children, Genevieve, Luke and Gabriella, of Anchorage; son, Jon and his children, Jamin, Claire, and Lawrence, of Anchorage; son Tim and wife Elaine, and their children, Adam, Alex and Andrew, of Kenai, Anthony of Nashville and Aaron in the U.S. Navy; son Tom and wife Julie Brown, and their children, Sam and Benji, of Seattle; son Dave and wife Denise, and their children, Tecla and Toby, of Anchorage; sister, Dorothy Wolking, of West Saint Paul; brother, Joe and wife Kay Wolking, of Tulsa; godchild Mike and wife Janeen McAllister, of West Saint Paul; and all of her extended family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Catholic Social Services, the National Parkinson's Foundation, or Hospice of Anchorage. Sign the online guestbook at legacy.com. Arrangements were by Anchorage Funeral Home.

Elysia Buffington Moyle
Monday, March 8th, 2010

Elysia Buffington Moyle, 40, Bismarck, was called home to her Heavenly Father on February 23, 2010 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

A Funeral Service was held at 11 am on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be at a later date at First Lutheran Cemetery in Kensington, MN.

Visitation was held on Friday, February 26, 2010 at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.
Elysia was born February 1, 1970 in Morris, MN to William and Cherryl Madison. She was welcomed home by her beloved sister, Christi, who became her lifelong protector and supporter. Elysia was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Kensington, MN. The family moved to San Jose, CA and later to Bismarck, ND where Elysia graduated from Bismarck High School in 1988. She later graduated with degrees in Sociology and Social Work from the University of Minnesota, Morris and the University of Mary, Bismarck.
On July 3, 1993 she was married to Rob Moyle in Bismarck where they made their home. They were blessed with a daughter, Breanna, on March 2, 1995 and Elysia began her most fulfilling role as a mother to her precious “Bre”. A second union to Darren Buffington on February 14, 1999 blessed her again with a stepdaughter, Dana. Elysia enjoyed vacationing and spending time with family and friends, especially swimming and water skiing at the family cabin on Brush Lake.

Elysia began her career as a Licensed Social Worker for the Standing Rock Tribe. For the past several years she has been a Therapeutic Social Worker for PATH, Inc. in Bismarck. She was devoted to helping “her children” and formed lasting bonds with many. Elysia was especially proud to be “Auntie” to her special Christy Garreau. Elysia was so grateful for the love and lasting friendships of her coworkers and foster parents at PATH. Though a professional social worker, Elysia’s compassion, sensitivity and gentleness was also the manner in which she lived her life. A leader and mentor, she fully embraced life and all its adventures as well as expressing her artistic talents in playing the piano and painting. In her illness she demonstrated courage with a positive attitude and never saw herself as the victim. Elysia left a legacy of wonderful memories which we now celebrate and cherish.

Blessed to have shared her life is her daughter, Breanna; parents, Bill (Joy) Madison, Modesto, CA and Cherryl (Ritchie) Johnson, Hoffman, MN; sister, Christi (Henry) Blaskowski, Shakopee, MN; grandmother, Blanche Goodwin, Hoffman, MN; and each of her special friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who she loved and appreciated.

Elysia was preceded in death by her grandparents, Francis Goodwin and Ed and Irma Madison; uncle, David Goodwin; and aunt, Dianne Hedstrom. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to Elysia’s favorite charity, the Make a Wish Foundation, 1102 43rd St. S, Suite E, Fargo, ND 58103. Thanks to Bob Burner the co-op manager in Donnelly for this info. The Donnelly co-op experienced a good year in 2009. It was not the record setting year that 2008 was but it mirrored the trend set by most companies. The audit was presented by Carol Boehland representing Hennen and Assoc of St Paul. Sales were projected be down $1.5 million due to reduced volume of fertilizer and petroleum products. Sales were actually down only $675,000. The co-op showed positive earnings of $204,000 compared to $436,000 in 2008. The guest speaker was Milt Lund from co-bank the bank that the Donnelly co-op bowered funds from. Milt assured patrons that the Don co-op is very secure & meets the banks working capital needs and should be around to borrow funds as needed for years to come. Both directors up for reelection were reelected to the board were re-elected to the board. The meeting concluded with door prizes.
